PS3 beats out Xbox 360 in US January sales, says NPDDVDBack23 @ Feb 15, 2008 19:48 | 30 comments
Software sales for the month increased 11 percent however, to $610.6 million USD, but NPD's Anita Frazier attributed that increase mainly to higher prices, such as the expensive "Guitar Hero" and "Rock Band" bundles that both sold very well.
Hardware sales were down a hefty 25 percent to $377.8 million USD with the Nintendo Wii leading the Pack again with sales of 274,000 units. Notably though, the Sony PlayStation 3 took second place with 269,000 units sold, placing it just ahead of the
Hardware sales were down 25 per cent to USD 377.8 million, with the Wii once again leading the pack with sales of the PS2 (264,000) and the Microsoft Xbox 360 (230,000).
"Based on this month's results, software sales are off to a fantastic start," said Frazier. "Accessories are also very hot, so the industry looks to be pretty healthy out the gate." |

The target audiences are way different. The Wii's main appeal is not to the hardcore gamers that the next-gen consoles are aiming for, but to those people who for whatever reason may not have opted for any form of console in the past. It's the interface that sells the Wii and not the capabilities. So really, the types of TVs that people own will probably not affect the types of consoles that they buy.

Comment by: kingrob (Feb 15, 2008 23:24) Totally agree with all the above.

I think that any future use for next-gen media on the 360 will have to be questioned, now that some of the larger retailers seem to be heading towards Blu-Ray.

Comment by: jagstilv (Feb 16, 2008 02:24) It's good to see the PS3 is finally starting to come into its prime. 2007 was a great year for X360 and 2008 should be PS3's year to shine. The Wii - the only of the three that I don't own - is of course out in front early. It'll be interesting to see if it can stay there. I'm waiting to see what MS answer is to the failing HD-DVD. Will they go Blu-Ray? |
Comment by: ZippyDSM (Feb 16, 2008 11:06) The WII is still the king of the 7th generation, its going to take the PS3 5 years of solid sales to match the profits they made in the first year.

Comment by: 7thsinger (Feb 16, 2008 14:54) It is nice to see the PS3 finally start to pick up some real numbers. I'll agree with Zippy (and many others) that it is still overpriced, no matter which model.

Comment by: ooZEROoo (Feb 16, 2008 15:43) Overpriced? I was one of those people who had faith in the Playstation brand since day one and bought the $600 60 gig unit. You say overpriced I say one of the cheapest blu-ray players on the market. |
Comment by: 7thsinger (Feb 16, 2008 15:49) Quote: Oh, i'm an avid Playstation fan. I had faith in them too. I shelled out the $500.00 for the 80GB model, and don't regret it(although i should have bought the 60GB when i had the chance). I think it could stand to be $100.00 cheaper, if not more on the 40Gb model.

Comment by: ooZEROoo (Feb 17, 2008 03:03) Yeah at the beginning it would have been nice. At the time look at how much Sony was losing on each individual unit. The technology is cheaper now so it is not as devastating. The boost in sales has been rising due to the recent price cuts. |

Comment by: bib1234 (Feb 17, 2008 19:10) It only going to get better for the ps3, now with blue ray the De facto winner in the DVD race. PS3 is better technology with a bigger up side then the 360. I have both system and yes I play the 360 more, but after Haze, MGS4, and the new home network come out on the ps3. My 360 is going to start collecting dust. |

Comment by: snowlock (Feb 18, 2008 03:06) it seems obvious that price is behind the drop in sales, therefore it's no surprise to me that ps2 is still selling like crazy.
Originally posted by ooZEROoo: the average consumer would, obviously, rather buy one of the cheapest game consoles on the market, even if it doesn't even play dvd.

Comment by: Nephilim (Feb 18, 2008 23:33) I work the stockroom at a local Walmart on weekends to help make ends meet and to this day we can't hardly keep Wii's in stock. They're gone as soon as we get them unlike the other two. |
Comment by: armyman45 (Feb 18, 2008 23:36) im not a big fan of ps3 personally i own 360 and i prefer the games but it is nice to see it not turn into the total bust it seemed it would at first besides i may get one one day the main reason being blueray players are more expensive than it but they can do the same |

|
Comment by: goodswipe (Mar 20, 2008 15:14) This is probably because of all the Blu-ray hoopla that was being pushed on people during the months of December and January. It was a cheaper alternative to buying a 500 dollar standalone.
"look honey, it said goodswipe! oh wow, that's amazing."

Comment by: Oner (Mar 20, 2008 16:01) jkeryder First off watch you language, because if you can't I will gladly remove your account from aD. As for YOUR opinions, they are exactly that, your own. Not everyone feels the same way (Thank God) as you, personally I really don't like the 360 (though I own one as well as Wii, DC, PSP, PS3, PS2, PS1, Xbox and more) as all there is are FPS's. If I wanted that I will stick to my PC.

Any other thoughts I had have already been covered by Oner. |
Comment by: borhan9 (Apr 09, 2008 08:36) The stats always go up and down and sony may put a great fight in however with nintendo's wii still doing strong however i think the key is to try and keep competitor low if that means a tag team 2 against one mentality at first so be it then after the 3rd party disapears then you can focus on yourselves and your one and only opponent left in the market. |
