Another PS3 price cut is coming, says iSuppli

DVDBack23 @ Mar 03, 2008 20:13 | 74 comments

The large research company iSuppli has said that it believes the Sony PlayStation 3 console will see another price cut during the course of 2008 leading to a huge Christmas for the system.

Analyst Pamela Tufegdzic is quoted as saying, "We anticipate Sony will have another price slash on the PS3 this year, and come Christmas, consumers who originally bought the Wii will likely purchase the PS3."

Continuing on, Tufegdzic reiterated that "2008 will be a turning year for the PS3 - Sony is offering a better forthcoming software pipeline with blockbuster titles like Gran Turismo 5, which will boost PS3 sales this year."

Despite drops in manufacturing costs, Sony still loses money on each console sold, albeit it is less than when the console first launched in late 2006.

Sony has announced that it expects manufacturing costs to drop substantially again this year and that should prompt the company to either slash prices or at least consider it.

sigh, unfortunately no... the Wii is not the device for more (or even slightly more) complex media needs. The Wii is the Wii, it's not designed to do things what the X360 or the PS3 can.

Picture slides on the Wii is fair, but compare to the PS3, well, the car pictures above pretty sum up the idea (i didn't try this on the X360 yet, b/c it doesn't take memory cards).

There are two things always instant hits at family gatherings and parties. #1 Wii's party games #2 PS3's AVCHD video and picture slides (the Eye's interactive arts are getting praises too). But #1 has problems, too many people and it doesn't work well in crowded areas (elbow Grandma Fanny in the face is no joke).

How is this a thread about the Wii when it clearly states "PS3 price cut"?

And I also sense a lot of fanboyism here also, which sucks.

Comment by: Gnawnivek (Mar 07, 2008 14:55)

Well, it's natural that people like to compare things, even apples and oranges. You know why? Well, the common denominator is the same, i.e. cash... If you express Wii, X360 and PS3 in terms of cash, duh, you can compare them side by side, even though the comparison is still pretty much apples vs. oranges :)

People bring up the Wii and X360 b/c they think that even with the PS3's price cut, the PS3 is still more expensive (cash-wise). So, by evaluating the consoles as a whole and throwing factors like what you like to do with them besides playing games, you can see which console really worth more for the bucks.

Or you could just not care and purchase the system that YOU want.

What not care about price? Hmm, maybe for some of you 14 year olds out there that have Mommy and Daddy to hold your hand all the way through life don't care about price. But for some of us that don't want to pay 400-500 dollars for a console, have to look at other options. ;)

The ps3 is looking more promising every day. Most of my friends already have a 360 and the one's that don't are planning on getting one now that the RROD is "fixed". Not a single one believes me when I tell them that the failure rate hasn't decreased significantly. I've waited long enough for MS to get their act together.

Between all the new games coming out this year for the ps3 and possible price drops I'm sold. I would have had a 360 from the start if it wasn't for the RROD and the cost of live.

If have played the Wii for any amount of time, you would know that it is a work out, I have one and raving rabbities, man that game is a good work out. With the Wii fit coming out soon in the US, the Wii will be even more popular with the adults. The system is great family play and for parties.

But if you think about it it is all in how you play the game, bowling for example some people just sit there and flick their wrists and get a perfect 300. Then there are the people who actually get up and go through the bowling motions, that is what the Wii was meant for not just the people who want to sit there and press buttons. The amount of workout you do all depends on how much you want to do. -LEMS-

Yup, you are right my friend. And I'm glad that you can see what is being said here. Some people like to disregard what's said because their serious fanboys. Anything that is said good about a system they don't like, well, they just won't listen.

FYI, I'm 20yrs old and have a good paying job. Bought my own PS3, Wii, and Xbox360.

So then what were you referring to about "not caring"?

About which system is best. Play whatever you want. Fanboys feed on flaming and other fanboys, which sounds a bit homo but its true.

Err, what does homo has to with fanboyism? Anyway, good for you that you got a good paying job and able to buy all three consoles. However, even you have all three, that doesn't mean you don't compare them at some point. You ever wonder since the Wii and PS3 got WiFi build in, then why the hell X360 doesn't? You ever wonder you can get digital sounds from X360 and PS3, but not the Wii (graphic is obvious different, but why should sound)? You ever wonder why the Standby function is different among the three consoles (e.g. in the PS3 if it's in Standby mode, the USB power is cut off, thus you can't use it to charge a controller)? The list of things go on and on (games aside)...

One thing that I've never understood about the Wii, is those so called "HD Cables" they try and sell. It's just a set of component cables. If your source isn't in HD, the component cables aren't going to change anything. Maybe give you some deeper colors, but that's about it.

As for the 360 not having built in wifi, that's just so M$ can try and turn another buck by us having to pay for an adapter.

think MS could do better with their pricing schemes.

130$ for the base unit with A/V and component hookups,1 wireless pad and power cord
25$ for the mem card
40$ for the 20GB HDD
80$ for the 120GB HDD
30$ for the wifi adapter.
350$ for a all in one elite with with A/V and component hookups,1 wireless pad and power cord and mem card.

Sony also could have done better....

where can you buy one for $30?
they retail at $100,
amazon has them for $90+,
even on ebay they're about $60.

built-in wifi is now an industry standard,
and microsoft missed that by releasing a year early.

because they over price it by at least 2X, any wifi device of tis type is a messily 20-30$ hell you can buy a wi fi router for 20-30.

MS like sony has over priced their stuff,I think the PS3 would have been off if they made the HDMI setup to be finished by a 100$ device that with wifi being 50$ and BT being 30$ (default wired controller) the card reader being 40$

all of this could be streamlined into the unit as optional extra making the base BR playing unit outputting to component/stero/spif for about 350-380.

making the total for fully loaded PS3 570-600.

oh, i didn't understand the meaning of your post.
now i get it.

you are correct sir.

that's not to mention the fact that live gold is still $50/year.
i seem to remember when it was the original xbox,
$50 got you a year on live and a headset.
no headset in the $50 retail package now.

free online play is also industry standard.

Not really for 2 reasons, it was not "standard" on the PS2 or the GC they didn't have the infrastructure to fool with it so it was more a rarity with some company’s charging for their games to go onto online MP servers.

2.PCs are not consoles, PC games tended to let people host a game server taking the brunt if not all of the cost out of most online PC titles.

(which makes me wonder why a MMO dev/pub can’t let people host their own servers for a low yearly subscription of 25$ a year to all players and 50$ game the 25$ a year pays for the login server that handles the login accounts and perhaps saved player data but nothing more than that) then make a god pack where the server admin can tweak the game by changing some easily selectable rules/rates/prices and charge the admin 75 a year for that kit, in order to limit cheating the service out of money all accounts to a server will be suspended if a server is found to be in violation.
Cheating can be curved via a vote system 5 diff IP votes in 1 hour you are kicked from that server for 10 hours being kicked 5 times in a week’s time results in a month’s ban from that server.
Put in a 5$ transfer fee for characters, hell add a character utility one can use to save and modify their characters with for 25$ a character or a 1$ a attribute/skill/ect.

There are many ways to make money here without insanely high monthly rates (anything over 5$ a month is high, over 10 insanely high).
Then on top of all this have Full MMO servers that you can pay 15$ a month for.

but back to MS they ahd to have the fee for the first 5 years to build the service I'll give them that, now adays its just gravy for them and bile for the consumer.

Comment by: snowlock (Mar 08, 2008 08:58)

what i meant by online play being industry standard now
is that you can play games on psn or nintendo wifi
for free, from your wii or ps3.

maybe they could charge a nominal monthly fee for extra services,
but unless they provide free download credits with gold or something
there's no longer justification for charging if you only want online play.

MS has damaged their online potential not to mention how games can be implamentd on the 360 in general.

They really need to drop the live fee get the 20GB HDDs out in force about 30 a pop and make the 120 GB HDDs about 60, drop the stupid limits they placed it devs to make sht for it and let the games really begin but the bastards are making one bad mistake after another.

MS has managed to eat and sht out the credit I gave them now sony is looking to earn some credit even if tis a pint or 2 tey are still doing better than MS on things....

Hell MS could dale a 150$ HDD kit that can output to a USB HDD,build alil program to read it on a PC so you can load and backup stuff.
MS can not innovate or be consumer friendly easily it seems..then again bill did copy alot of stuff :P

how can it be for cheap people when tis the same price as a 360 premium?
I might be a game nazi but I am not a game fascist....

Also the WII has made more money than the PS3 and 360 combined, scary eh?

The only thing wrong with the WII is not enough games for gamers.
