Sony reports rise in weekly PS3 sales following price cutDela @ Nov 16, 2007 15:07 | 23 comments Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) is delighted with the boost in unit sales of the PlayStation 3 (PS3) console since the company cut the price of the 80GB model and offered up a 40GB model. In the week of October 29th, the company sold 75,000 PS3 units, and then the following week sold 100,000 more units. Compare that performance to previous weekly sales between 30,000 and 40,000 units.
The boost is a result of cutting the 80GB model by 17%, to $499 in mid-October, and then going on to sell a 40GB model on November 2nd for $399. Also assisting in sales is the shortage of Nintendo's hot-selling Wii console. This indeed is good news for the PS3, which has suffered under-performance all year long, and comes just ahead of the holiday season.
A high price tag and scarcity of titles led a lot of potential PS3 buyers to Microsoft's Xbox 360 or the Wii console. The PlayStation brand is a very strong brand across the world, but the name alone did not drive gamers to purchase the console in adequate numbers while it was the most expensive console and offered the least alluring software line-up.
Now with the new price points and more promises for the game line-up, the company is hoping that the dark times for the PS3 are coming to a close. This holiday season, the PS3 will take aim at both the Xbox 360 and the Wii, and it will be interesting to see what the numbers will be in January after a bad year in the United States for the console.
In October overall, Nintendo's Wii was number 1, selling 519,000 units, followed by the Xbox 360 with 366,000 and then the PS3 with 121,000 units, according to data from NPD. Looking forward to the November numbers.

The only game i want to play on the ps3 is metal gear 4, and i think that also will come to the 360. becaues the games sell more on 360. maybe in two more years at 199.99. |

Comment by: hughjars (Nov 17, 2007 02:05) Nevermind the predictable diversion to silly guessing games and the predictions & claims about what is supposed to be coming next year (which is really just a retread of everything that was said this time last year anyways).

Comment by: DieMPAA (Nov 17, 2007 07:13) The price cut was mid-October, so adjust the overall sales or wait until mid-January to see how December (which is where things really matter) turned out. My point is, we need a closer race between Sony, MS, and Nintendo. As far as the MPAA, you know how I feel, but seriously, if you think Nintendo, a large corporation, is any more magnanimous than Sony, you are smoking more and worse dope than I am. Sony also has a music division, which is caught up in its own wrong-minded jihad against consumers and has managed to dictate policy to Sony hardware.

There are a ton of people waiting for Socom Confrontation from slant6 and another Socom from Zipper. Socom is the PS equivalant to Halo. You have the MGS fans and the FF fans waiting as well.

Comment by: borhan9 (Dec 09, 2007 21:41) This should not be seen as surprising due to the fact that we have been saying this all this time that if you drop the prices then you will see a growth in prices the only thing you will see less of is the fact that your profit margins will be less. |
Comment by: Dat1boi (Dec 10, 2007 16:39) One of the articles actually was updated and the Sony chick said that she was misquoted and it was 100,000 for just ps3.

Comment by: cartucho (Dec 10, 2007 21:37) i dunno why people complaint about no games for ps3.. last thing i remember when i picked up the 360 the day it launched was that all the games sucked balls!!! for god sakes i played 6 months halo 2 before i even picked up a decent game for 360. then gears came along and thats a different story.. Now i sold the 360 and picked up the original ps3 60gb.. yes the ORIGINAL!! y?? well is simple... playstation seems to have a more reliable machine. just look at the PS2 the sucker still selling like hot cakes.. Ps3 just had a slow start but the games will come. specially when the figure out how to maximize the performance of the cell processor. Not sure f you guys try encharted but the games is sweet. ans its only been a year. imagine the power of that machine in 3 yrs ... it will be insane. at the same time Microsoft will eventually come up with a new system while the Ps3 will still be in the market.. Lets face it Halo 3 was a HUGE let down. i play it at my buddys and is exactly the same as Halo 2. ridiculus.. and now they are being suit bc is not even HD ... lol.. if they loose the lawsuit they are going to give back all the cash for every single copy of the game.. which could be the downfall of the green machine. anyhow y in the world im writing this crap here. im off to playing some call of duty on my precious PS3.. cheers |
