Sony lowers development kit pricesDavedough @ Nov 19, 2007 15:52 | 31 comments Sony seems to has made a habit out of slashing its prices. Earlier this season, Sony brought out the 40Gb PS3 which brought a much needed surge in sales for the struggling console. Now, Sony wishes to lure more third party game developers into their midst by slashing the price of their development kits in half.
Although the predecessor of the PS3 was a dominant force in the console gaming market, its no secret that the PS3 has had a hard time moving units. It wasn't until it slashed the prices on its console that it saw successful sales numbers. In fact, in the week beginning November 5, Sony actually outsold this generation's juggernaut, the Nintendo Wii by some 20,000 units.
With lowering the price of the developer's kit for the PS3, Sony now hopes to expand on its library of games by hoping third-party developers will have an easier time making quality titles for their flagship console.

Just like any article that hits on this site people automatically assume that when Sony has a issue with the PS3 its going to fail or they wait it to fail. |

Comment by: jookycola (Nov 19, 2007 20:29) I think what did it for me was at launch time the (then current head of games div) not only smuggly revealed the ridiculous prices of the PS3 units. But then went on to say they're going to let developers all their own prices on games too. And that he could clearly see games for the PS3 in the $80 to $100 range.

Comment by: SProdigy (Nov 19, 2007 21:16) NexGen, that's 08 and 09, still talking anywhere from 1-2 years off where this dog will be bleeding money and Sony will still have to find ways to "cut" from the price. They've already changed to the smaller chip manufacturing process, so I can't imagine there's much else they can eliminate from the equation (for the time being) that will help them gain any more of an edge.

Comment by: vinny13 (Nov 19, 2007 22:18) What about when games become too big to fit onto a DVD-9? They're already having trouble with GTA4. The only problem that Sony is having with their games is that they are hard to code for, but the devs will eventually get used to it...

Originally posted by nextgen76: - Actually as my links showed they had a small short lift in sales which has now settled back and they have been caught lying about the numbers they are shifting (in the serious business press too.......not something that will go down to well in the financial markets, especially after their recent poor results).

This is the same on both sides. Its a either a PR spin or fanclubs boosting numbers and stats. It will be the same no matter which side you point to. |

Comment by: wetsparks (Nov 24, 2007 03:24) I hate to burst your bubble hughjars when you are obviously feeling so full of yourself, but on one of the links that you posted, it says Quote: For them to post an article saying that the PS3 sold 100,000 units, then have to wright another saying, "no that isn't right, it was this," then having to update it again saying, "no the PS3 really did sell this much," they knew they had to get it right or else it would be a big embarrassment for the company. If they can't get a report about something that simple, then what else had they misreported?
Originally posted by hughjars: The PS3 does have a lot of spin around it, but so does the 360. So if you really do don't give a damn about consoles then I expect you to find some news report to "point out the spin and lies" that Microsoft puts out there. |
Comment by: vinny13 (Nov 24, 2007 04:14) Ya those HD-DVD add-ons are just selling like hot cakes these days =/ |
Comment by: borhan9 (Dec 19, 2007 07:29) Prices will continue to drop thats just the way things are going to be. |
