PS3 to include DivX support

Davedough @ Nov 13, 2007 17:06 | 38 comments

While rumors sprout up about Microsoft's Xbox 360 may be getting DivX support, it has been confirmed that Sony will include DivX support with their flagship PS3.

There will be a Firmware update that will enable the support for DivX playback which opens up the system as a much more media friendly system. While the implementation is still unseen, there are talks about integration within Sony's online meeting place Home having support for the imported digital files as well. No word yet on how Sony will attempt to stop people from broadcasting intellectual property or adult content over their vulnerable online sharing network.

Playback on the system is certified by DivX to be "excellent" yet there is no word on whether or not it will upscale these files to 1080p or make use of the digital surround sound.

This is a huge suprise that sony is supporting Divx, all of their standalone DVD/upconvert players don't support Divx.

It seems pretty weird that an expensive bluray Ps3, which is capable of displaying high definition video will play the exact opposite low quality divx format.

one thing i've learned is that sony is a follower they will never make anything they came up with themselves, if they see other people doing it, they have to do it to (just like the six axis).

You must think Nintendo invented motion capture.

Do you use HDMI cable? The rep on the phone told me that some how there is a conflict with the HDMI cable going from my PS3 to my Samsung that it causing this problem. She had me turn of the 24mhz option in BD/DVD option and it worked. She says that the only way to fix it was to go and exchange my PS3 again. I could not downgrade the firmware. Any suggestions?

I use HDMI with my Sony XBR3 set.I heard some people say disable the update thing in the top right corner.

Then it flashes out to the PS3 standing idle on its side, which is what most people are doing with them anyway!

What’s the problem? You can't afford the games? There are plenty of them now. Mine collected a lot of dust at first but in the last couple of months my PS3 doesn't get much rest.
Or is it because the PS3 isn't fully hacked yet and you can't steal the games. Don't take that personally but that’s probably the number one reason I hear for not buying a PS3 right now.

Hey padding on features is not bad maybe by the time the "REAL" unit is 400 it will be worth every penny.

Well, I already own the other consoles and PS3 still costs $500. So how much cash do you think I have? :-)

There aren't that many exclusives that make me want to pluck down the money for a PS3. In addition, the price drops on HD-DVD players and movies have me thinking twice about Blu-Ray's position as the next format, which should be a concern for any consumer. Don't get me wrong, Blu-Ray has more of the blockbuster movies on their side, but are you willing to pay double the price for them over a DVD or HD-DVD you can get for $15-$20?

I don't think anyone cares about hacking a PS3 unless they can .iso the games onto the HDD, because Blu-Ray media and burners cost too much for the effort.

BTW, upconverted Divx movies actually look pretty good IMHO. So good in fact, I'm amazed that the movies can be 700mb in size. That's an obvious stab at EITHER High-Def optical format. Who needs 15gb discs? I would hope that support for Divx will help with playback of the HD container formats or at least future support for those as well.

MS better have this in their 360 fall update, because I'm sick of waiting for it. If only the original Xbox processor were faster, I could just stick with watching my HD Xvid's using XBMC.

dude......try reading that statement and have the balls to say it again, the PS3 lacks games, or I should say enough exclusives to make the price worth the cost, of course if you are happy with the current line up you'll buy whatever sht they offer and give it the 8's and 9s the paid off critics give to shtty shortsighted games.

Not to be a Sony flame-starter, but Zippy, you're right. Everywhere I look I see Assassin's Creed being advertised for the PS3, but it's merely an after thought on the 360. I don't think a Divx seal on the box is going to sway my decision anytime soon.

At 500 its goign to take ALOT of exclusive titles to make it worth the price, at 400 it needs 10 or 20,at 300 less 5+, price V cost is always a factor a draw and the reason why a system is not bought.

Better then the 360's launch... I think the PS3's line-up is pretty strong for next year, or at least enough to make me not want to buy a 360. What do you expect for a console that uses new tech crap that the devs are too lazy to learn?

So ig euss what you are saying is while the 360 goes in for repairs/upgrading the PS3 will have enough games to be worth 500$ :P

Meh unless they get back to BWC I can't pay more than 350 for them they both have enough suck factor to not warrant a 400+ price tag.

I donno... If you already have a PS2 then BWC isn't really necessary... I barely use it anyways. Even though I had my PS2 hooked up i still take out the old PS1 if I want to play PS1 games. I can't really think of a PS2 game that I would play on a PS3 except GOW 2, but that's a back-up.

Now that I think about it, I think I'm gonna get a 40GB instead of the 80GB :)

could hook it up to a wireless router..but then the clutter...that plus a PS2 is a mess, and you wonder why BWC is a must? :P
