Microsoft to begin offering downloadable Xbox games

DVDBack23 @ Nov 13, 2007 23:12 | 31 comments

Coming with the Xbox 360 Fall Dashboard update on December 2nd, Microsoft has said six new full version original Xbox games will be available for download.

The six games are as follows, Burnout 3, Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, Fable, Halo: Combat Evolved, Indigo Prophecy.

The games will cost 1200 Microsoft points, approximately $15 USD and will most likely have similar DRM to that of Live Arcade games.

Microsoft is also planning to release more Xbox games on the Marketplace soon, and it is expected Halo 2 will be among that bunch.

I have a feeling they the first 100 games will be things BWC supports anyway but thats not the point, this opens the door for them to double their profftering ways.

I hope someone gets Xbox "emulation" working on the Xbox that would be awesome.....

Wait for sony to drop all BWC and focus on rebuying games through Home...oh the horror......

only trouble is it and fable are 5-15 USED and thats with shipping, its cute but the price is as much or more as buying it sued, they really need to try again, at 5-10 its much more reasonable.

Cool down Zippy... do you own a 360? They have been keeping up with BWC after putting it on the back-burner for a few months this past Spring. Out of nowhere they started supporting a bunch of games. This is just an option for people who don't already own the original Xbox disc. It's not like they are disabling the ability to play your original discs, just giving people a chance to download the game.

Also, you can always delete any of your Xbox Live purchased content (such as Live Arcade games) and redownload them at any time. I think the only DRM restriction is that it has to d/l to the same console.

The only money grab I see is more 120gb drives being sold!

But how much are the games brand new? After all, MS is not in the used gaming market, shops like GameStop make profit on secondary market sales, not MS. Considering this, it is a deal, but I always prefer to have the hard copy. The missing ingredient, if you will, is the inability to take the download to a friend's house and play the game, like you would with a physical disc.

How big will these downloads be?

Oh you can find them new from 10-20 depending on where you go and you can find like new for half that, like most digi distro places they want retail prices for things they have already made a profit from.

The price is to high even more so since these games will be 2-9GB in size on that 20GB HDD it just adds headaches to the user, this standard corporate anal rapage.

monkey83
Depends on the game but I figure 2-9GB.

There were only a handful of Xbox 1 games that broke the DVD5 barrier, such as Enter the Matrix and Ninja Gaiden. So I don't think any would be over 5gb.

I think theres another point being missed in here, thats world wide market, for instance, i live in mexico, wich makes it almost imposible to get a new copy of this games for less than 40usd, and that´s if i´m lucky enough to find a copy, for sure it would be a descisive point to be able to download and leave aside the anoyance to deal with 3rd party distributors like blockbuster wich in any case would be my #1 suplier, just think about that, would it be something good for you if you´d live in a world where your only good videogame store aroun was blockbuster

xbox's loyal (dumb) fans are getting scammed by buying the same game twice lmao.

Comment by: vinny13 (Nov 14, 2007 20:49)

Wow what a sham I can get Halo CE for $5.00 used and $10.00 new! That's retarded!

mmm, so sonys fan got scamed with all the psp ports?
a lot more got scamed whenever they sell a directors cut release?
or a playstation hits game?
i dont see how you get scamed, if you already have it, then you dont buy it, if you dont have it you can buy it at home just by entering the marketplace

To say they´re scammed would be to be decieved by saying its a new game and it being the same game, even more to get scamed would be if they sell it for double the price, as far as i see, users still have the choice to buy it or not, and at least the price doesn´t sound outrageous, if you search for the game on gamespot webpage costs 10 bucks for a used copy, 17.99 for a ps2 used copy, if you ask me, whoever buys the 17.99 copy is the one being scamed since you could just download it for 15 dollars, and yet not a used copy

Comment by: ali2007 (Nov 15, 2007 13:32)

again we spend, can't microsoft do some charity work, give something free to it's customers

Comment by: Spenman91 (Nov 15, 2007 13:52)

Now that I think of it, this isn't any worse than Nintendo's marketplace. I think I got Mario Kart for $30. 10 for the game download, and $20 for the classic controller.

oh really? how long dose it take to download a 3GB+ game and how many of them can you store on the 14GB HDD after the OS and save games eat it out...get real, used games/BWC are a better option I got Soul caliber 2 Xbox new for 9$ WITH SHIPPING off amazon!(got the GC version used for 6$)

Don't think tat EB and GS are the only places to buy a used game, alot of indie retailers and pawn shops put up stuff online and no one can beat there prices, I was surprised over the last 2 years amazon prices for used games have halved almost!

I agree with you Zippy on the fact that it would be smarter to update the BWC list for the 360. Were online game buying is a good thing at is they should be released those that are the hardest to get because there arent many in circulation or for people who live in a area that doesnt really have good old or used games for sale. Thats where the benefit of this is good.

I read on a few sites that the CEO Ken Hirai said they didnt discontinue the 20gig or 60gig version they just stopped production to release a cheaper system for people to afford and to possibly look for them to re-release those other version at a cheaper price after the holidays. If i had a link to it i would post it but i do remember what site i was on when i seen that. I think its smart to care enough for what your customers need but they should at least update their list their a firmware upgrade instead of slapping the Emotion chip back in. We'll see who makes the right moves on this soon.

I dunno this could be wrote of as dev speak, lieing is easy for them, but if they bring out a a solid unit with more polished BWC and features even at 450 is not so bad, I want features and polish in hardware, I hope they learn from MS somewhat and try and improve it every other year.

Wow. Microsoft, you have successfully found a way to get me to buy Fable, Halo, and Burnout twice, and be happy about it. Well played, Microsoft. Well played.
