PS3 gets its own antivirus applicationDela @ Nov 16, 2007 15:46 | 28 comments
Not only does this software protect users form malicious web sites, it also has a password-protected service to keep websites depicting illegal activity, pornography or similar content away from children's eyes. It makes sense to offer such a service, as many parents who do monitor and take a roll in the PC use of their children are just too happy to let them sit in front of a games console alone and be quiet for a few hours.
However, some industry experts are wondering if this sort of protection is needed for consoles right now, and whether there is significant demand for it. "I think the jury's still out," said Daniel Ives, an analyst at Friedman Billings Ramsey. "Over the coming years, as the console becomes more common in terms of Web browsing, that's when you can really try to gauge what type of opportunity it is for the antivirus vendors."
Trend Micro however, maintains the claim that consoles are becoming increasingly at risk to these threats and its new PS3 software applies the company's technologies for identifying Web sites that host malicious code or are a front to steal passwords. It was released earlier this month as part of a PS3 upgrade and will be free until April.

That's not a knock on Windows, because I use it for everything, but have you ever seen a virus on a Mac, Linux PC, cell phone, PDA, iPod, etc.??? I'm sure there's one or two out there, but it's rare. If a virus were to happen, can't Sony just patch the hole in their software and send out a firmware update? I think this is a ridiculous feature, and who knows what it scans and how that effects system performance. |
Comment by: spydah (Nov 16, 2007 21:47) I dont think it is a bad idea for them to give you this option to use. I would prefer something like NOD32 which doesnt hurt your performance like other anti-viruses. |
Comment by: glasssd (Nov 16, 2007 23:20) Like xSmodder said. I would want to be able to turn it off if I dont like it. |

Comment by: vinny13 (Nov 18, 2007 15:52) The average user rating for NOD32 on CNET is a 9.3. CNET rated NOD32 2.5 a 7.3 only because it's confusing for the average user but the people still rated it an 8.9. Most Nortons and Kaspersky were rated a 7 or an 8 by CNET and no higher then 6 by the people.

Comment by: L-Burna (Nov 18, 2007 18:04) The best antivirus is Panda in my opinion have had it on my PC for a long time now.I have never had to worry about viruses, and I tried out Nod32 and Kaspersky and they both suck compared to Panda.Even their nanoscan online virus scanner is better than Nod32 and Kaspersky. |

It gives you many "toppings" or choices, which is good but some just like the plain sauce and cheese. I went through all the settings last night on my friend's computer and now it's bullet-proof :)

Comment by: pryme_H (Nov 19, 2007 03:28) I used Norton Internet Security, and so far it hasn't given me any headaces yet. There is not a single anti-virus that's flawless. They all have different detection, prevention and ease of use. ![]() |
Comment by: borhan9 (Dec 11, 2007 02:40) The way consoles are growing nowadays they would need this as standard inbuilt protection. |
Comment by: Anonymous User (Jul 26, 2011 14:38) I have a very bad experience with Trend Mirco. I purchase full version and installed on PS-3 but could not activate it and after so many emails exchanged between me and trend mirco I removed it. Thanks God I also get the refund but with after some time. |
