Now fans who have been holding off on buying Sony's PS3 can still garner some of the benefits of the device by downloading content directly from the newly launched Playstation Store. This web based store currently features a few PSP titles available for download and some classic PSX titles as well. On the website as of this posting, Wipeout Pure is available for download at a curiously low file size of 156Mb for $14.99 along with an even smaller 67Mb Syphon Filter:Combat Ops multi-player shooter for $9.99.

The PSX games available seem to be of the classic variety. Several titles from the system's early years appear on the download list. Several demos are also available for your downloading pleasure.

Sony does require Firmware 3.70 or greater to utilize this feature and also requires you use their PSP Network Downloader to put the systems on your memory card. What this will do to the Homebrew scene is still unknown.

Its nice to see something like this develop with OK prices for the content. Does anyone know if Sony have a base for the content price?

Or is the price dependent on the size of the content rather then the system its for? (i.e. PSX games are $10, PSP games are $15 or is it sized based)

Hey this is nice, but the content is only playable on the psp? or can you also play the psx games on the ps3?, funy thing that microsoft and sony are making very similar steps, a few days ago there was a news article about xbox 360 getting some xbox games available to download through xbox live marketplace, if they at some point make this with ps2 games to be played on ps3 i for sure want some piece of action with the ps3, although some people state that this kind of services are actually a scam, or maybe it is just a scam when microsoft does it

Some people look at M$ XBL downloadable games as a scam because they still charging for XBL when its really no need. Plus they nickel and dime the heck out of people through their services. I know Sony will have their nickel and dime moments too but at this point because PSN is a free service and they offer a few games that you can buy right now its to early to say how deep its going to get for Sony as of yet.

No way, what MS and Sony are doing is the same exact thing. People wanted to cry and say MS was a scam because lets say Game A is not BWC with the physical disc, but you can pay to download it. Okay, well my argument is the different versions of PS3's out there, some with the Emotion Engine, others that have software emulation and then the 40gb bombshell just released that supposedly has no BWC at all. So now what you're telling me is that I can PAY for the DOWNLOAD and it will play, but not the disc? The only way it's not a "scam" is if you have the choice to play either your original or the download (based on what you purchased.) If it's only the download, then they are trying to resell old games.

Funny, I have a Wii and can download NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, etc. and no one has cried "scam" on those. Honestly, emulators take care of most, except the N64 games which run pretty well on the Wii and I'd gladly pay $10 for instead of collecting those ungodly and costly cartridges (try finding some games for under $20 on the secondary market!) In short, Sony and MS are playing catchup to Nintendo right now.

But the difference is Sony as of now isn't selling ps2 games, only ps1 which all versions of the ps3 can play (including the 40GB). So your argument only makes sense if Sony decided to start selling ps2 games but not supporting the physical disc, (which wouldn't surprise me) in which case they would be doing the same thing as Microsoft.

Sorry, that still doesn't hold water then, because all the games MS is selling are BWC with the physical discs (at the moment.) I know everyone believes MS dropped BWC support, but they picked it back up and most titles are supported. The notable exception is Chronicles of Riddick and that's because the developer is remaking the game with some upgrades for the 360... that sounds more like a scam! ;-)

still wats not clear to me is weather is the content playable on the ps3 or is it just to transfer it to a psp?
