$399 USD PS3 coming?

DVDBack23 @ Sep 10, 2007 18:15 | 47 comments

As reported earlier, the impending death of the 60GB Sony PlayStation 3 has led to intense rumors as to what Sony will do when the 80GB model is the only unit left.

According to Arstechnica however, consumers will be getting what they have been waiting for for months. The price of the 80GB model will drop to $499 while Sony will introduce a new "base" model, a 40GB offering for $399, just $50 USD more than the rival Core Xbox 360.

The sources involved believe Sony will also bundle the upcoming Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray movie which is expected to be one of the biggest sellers for Blu-ray when it hits shelves in late October. Also expected is a price drop on the PS2 to $99 USD. That being said, dont expect to hear any official news from Sony on the new offering until at least October although we will be waiting and will report any updates.

I gotta admit i feel a little bad for the PS3. They already lose so much off the consoles's it costs like 800 to make one. As for games, good ones will come, but right now it's slim pickin's. Remember the xbox 360 when it first came out? All it had was that one shooter game with the orange haired chick a golfing game and some lame ping pong crap. Now look at it. It pwns Halo 3 Bioshock, Gears of War, Dead Rising, Crackdown, just to name a few. The PS3 may suck but in the long run I think it has a decent chance of being the best console out there. But NO ONE WILL MAKE ANY GOOD GAMES!!! I'm tired of the console wars, just in general we need good games forget Wii/360/PS3 We just need games. And that is my lil' rant about the PS3 price drop.

so hang on, they are dropping the price by $100 with a downgraded 40gig hard drive, that probably costs more than the 80gig because of outsourcing the hardware and they think this will buy over the customer, wtf are sony playing at. the 80 gig is already scaled down because of the removal of the emotion engine (ps2 chip) that ensures 100% backwards compatibility and!

if the only difference is the hard drive its a complete rip off to purchase the 80gig version but i reckon it will have other hardware removed like the memory card reader and the wireless adapter, maybe even the bluetooth module will go.

another sku just to stop sony losing face is pathetic, they should release the 80gig that is already missing hardware for $350 so it can compete, not even an idiot would purchase an overpriced game machine that has 0 games worth playing that can't already by purchased for other formats.

@ 26r0cK

what's the point in a blu-ray player if the hdmi is removed sony's DRM BD+ and AACS blocks all HD signals that are not output via hdmi, this would be a bad move indeed! if this is the case the console should be sold for $200 negating the cost of the pointless blu-ray player. i doubt sony would even consider this!

All I can say for certain if sony has the balls to lower the price to 300-400 and leave the system virtually intact (wifi/multi card reader optional in about 6 months more games will ported to platform, really sony is at a lose lose phase and a drastic price drop will kick start not only more consumer interest in it but more dev interest as well.

If sony dose this they can possibly out pace the 360 in less than 12 months if they effect price changes world wide!

Now who's getting desperate?

This will just be countered by Microsoft and Nintendo leaving the PS3 as still the most expensive and still with far too few games.

Okay i don't get this you have people that have complain about the price since launch but in July Sony dropped the price 100 dollars. Then Sony going to have a sku with a lesser price & people still complain this is making it really clear who the Fan-boy are in here. The Fan-boyism really need to stop Sony finally listening to there customers. You could be looking at a 400 PS3 in 1 years time thats a 200 price cut on a new console in one year where as Microsoft which claim there making profit off the 360 giving a 50 price cut thats laughable. The focus should be put on Microsoft with that laughable price cut they gave out.But like always Microsoft been there customer over & Microsoft customers can't see that because they are to worry about what Sony doing.

the 360 was already way cheaper than the ps3 so a 50.00 cut was a good first cut as there will be another no doubt maybe by xmas.

NIce a $400.00 paperweight, getting cheaper everyday to hold down my mail.!!

Comment by: hughjars (Sep 11, 2007 13:16)

.....and just what effect do folks think these rumours are going to have on current sales?

More than a little double-edged is this, IMO.

......and as a means to push Blu-ray?
Just around about the time the $149 HD DVD players arrive?!
Dream on.

There are a few more facets to it, the 360 was sold at bear bottom price to start with, the current price cuts are to help liquidate current stock and fill it with more stable units, as well as set the stage for another 20-50$ cut for the Xmas season or for summer or next year.

The 360 is at a somewhat reasonable price, even at 500 the PS3 is badly priced as a game "console" becuse at that price you have a hard time pushing units to market.

The 360 comes in 250/360 and 450 models it can sale well because it offers lower priced units the PS3 dose not and this is why the PS3 has had a bad time of it, while games are a issue the PS3 brand should carry enough power to sale a easy 6-8 million units and barely above half that (5) sony knows its games are not the issue price is and that they will have to effect sweeping price changes in order to be able to re gain their market share.

In the end it dose not matter what the PS3 price is if its above 400 its not going to do well unless its wiling to price point with the other systems.

hughjars
why even bother brining up BR the movie format war is a good 2-4 years from over, as a game console this system can not be over 440USD, the 360 has done well to hone its niche and has shown the industry what the max is on a console, sony main mistake is the huge price tag making every one look elsewhere.

Sony needs to re focus on game console not media machine, get the price down to get everyones attention and keep working on PSN/PSH/BWC/UPDATES polish polish and more polish!

The 360 will always be a niche system the only reason it has done so well is because it was launched a year before the others it has managed to hone its niche but without a proper expansion it will always play 2nd or 3rd wheel in a full scale console war.

Even at 300 for the elite the PS3 will do well even if its 100 more as long as it dose not top $550 world wide.

Looking to the future the PS3 can go 10 years the 360 could be replaced at any time and the WII's fad will end by 011(dosent really matter when it will end they've made moeny off the blighter already :P)

Comment by: saltynuts (Sep 11, 2007 14:32)

Zippy i agree to disagree the 360 is more of a foe to sony and nintendo than you think.its gonna come down to one thing games and right now and i mean right now.the 360 game lineup is very good and getting better and the fact remains its still easier to code for.look at like this if you were a dev which would you code for first.smart money is easy fast money.but dont get me wrong sony will get many of the same games most will come later than the 360 version and then some will be ports.devs will learn the ps3 but by then the 360 library will be incredible and hard to ignor.

Comment by: oofRome (Sep 11, 2007 15:40)

I thought the 360 was starting at $279.99.

- Cos it's obvious that is what the Spiderman3 movie is all about.
The low awareness of Blu-ray (wasn't it something like 40% of PS3 owners said they didn't even know about the BD player?) is what they are at there and clearly this is a push in the format war.

This isn't even a war anymore. Sales of the Wii are skyrocketing, and the 360 and PS3 are slowing to a halt. Say what you will, but Nintendo may have a Mario Galaxy or Super Smash Bros. package up their sleeve, and if they also drop their price, there goes any momentum their competitors had.

Ok, first off, this is a war between two companies, not three. There are two different types of gaming going on here. The WII is fun but you don't want to get caught playin it when your buddies come over. Your talkin about cartoon characters playin tennis or boxin or even Mario. This console was built for the younger generation. It is fun but I would rather be playin a little more of a sophisticated game. The Xbox 360 and Sony PS3 were built for a different generation of gamers. If you own a wii, and are a serious gamer. I would seriously consider betting my left testy that you probably own either a xbox 360 or ps3.

Comment by: netos (Sep 11, 2007 17:22)

I really could care less what Sony's marketing strategy is. I'm happy as long as they make boat loads of dinero, cause it'll help game production. On the other hand, I don't do them a favor by telling my friends not to buy the new 80gb system and hunt for the original 60gb. The emotion chip rocks and new 2.5"/3.5" SATA II hdds with higher rpm and capacity are getting cheaper by the minute. I've got one friend who swore by his 360 elite... but when he asked what the black box was sitting next to my ps3, I told him it was a 1000gb(1tb) 3.5" hdd that I hooked up to my ps3 in less than ten minutes. It's alot sweeter than the silly HD-DVD player he's got next to his 360. By the way, I got a 360 too. My kids love it and know better than to mess with my ps3.

Precisely my argument. PS3 could've been at $399 USD at LAUNCH, and could've been out shortly after the 360 if they didn't bother with the Blu-Ray crap to begin with.

Would have, could have,& should have what difference does it makes the price is now lower I'm tired of people bit!hing about what Sony or Microsoft should have done they are dropping prices so stop Bit!hing.

No the price is not lower this is a unfounded rumor and looking at Sony they would rather scuttle PS3 than halve the price.

And it will take more than a 399 price drop in the US to get the damn thing to the point where the others are, not only will it have to be no more than 400USD in the US and japan but no more than 600USD wold wide, once the prices line up it should sale a easy 5-19 million units by end of next year but only if they effect sweeping price changes.

yeah that's right beacuse people talk like only US and JAPAN buys stuff, i live in peru and honestly no one cares for the 360 or the wii all they want is the ps3 but here they are selling it for 800 (60gb) a price cut there is price cut here and if they do that sales are gonna go way up, cuz our currency is 3.16 SOLEs= 1USD so when we save 2400 we can buy a ps3 imagine yourself saving 2400 USd, i'd say that if price cut like that are done people all over the world and remember Sony always win remember gamecube had good sales too and the xbox kind of cuz of halo but who is still on market who is still on bussines the ps2 a machine from 2001 eyah cuz SOny makes the best stuff ;)

as for sony being the king this much is true but like all good things there is always someone or something better to take the thrown.yes ps1 and ps2 were powerhouses in there own right but lets remember this GM was the worlds largest automaker.not the best but largest and toyota dethrown them.so you see king today pawn tommorrow.it can happen not to say that it will.even with all the flaws the 360 is selling well and have a pretty good game lineup planned out for the rest of the year and next year as well.dont count out M$ out yet.

and iam not a fanboy this is just my opinion.

i live in the uk and we have seen no price cut whatsoever. we also have a lesser machine for the highest cost than the rest of the world as our hardware (ps3) has not got the emotion engine (ps2 chip) as it was removed to save costs messing up backwards compatibility.

We was given a bundle of 2 controllers and Resistance Fall of Man and MotorStorm for £425 = $865. which is crap imo and a total piss take of the euro region from sony!

I plan on getting a PS3 this week for $300.00+tax let me explain how
I'll trade my PS2 in with about 6 games and that should give me about
$50.00 off the $499.00 then after I get my (5) free Blu-ray disc ($150.00 value)that should put me around $350.00 after taxes. I've purchased the HD-DVD player from mircosoft for $200.00 after buying the console for $400.00, Right now PS3 has the best value to me, a stand alone blu-ray player is $500.00 and best of all no RING OF DEATH !!!!!!

That depends on how you look at value.if you like br movies hell yeah thats a great deal.but on the other hand if standard dvd is your bag then the 360 is the way to go.as a 360 pro is 350.00 straight up.and as for the red lights they will fix it for you for three years so thats not really a big issue like it was a year ago.now iam not saying that the red lights are right or fair but it is a problem that they will fix for you.so all in all what is value to you.
