40 GB PlayStation 3 is coming to US

DVDBack23 @ Oct 02, 2007 16:34 | 40 comments

Although Sony America has yet to confirm or deny it, leaked Best Buy documents seem to prove that a new 40 GB PlayStation 3 bundle is coming to the US.

The documents show the new console having a retail price of $399 USD and coming bundled with Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray disc. The console will have an early November launch date.

Previous models of the PS3 have FCC product numbers of CECHA01 and CECH01, respectively and last week Sony filed documents with the FCC for a product with the number CECHG01, sparking a flood of rumors that a new model was coming soon.

More information when the new model is confirmed.

Well Sony did that with the PSP bundling with a Spider-man UMD movie. I think its more of a Sony tradition.

Sony's tradition was truly successful for the UMD format so thats a relief to us all I'm sure.

I wasn't complaining. I was kind of joking because I said it wouldn't fit many games on it.

Also, as a general statement, would the fanboys just stop? Just because someone says something in Sony's defense doesn't make them a fanboy. Ignoring facts and hyping up something more than it is is being a fanboy. Also, jumping on someone by calling them a fanboy just because they said something for something makes me think you are a fanboy of the opposition to whatever they said something for.

I just don't understand you people. (most of you) Everybody wants something for nothing. It’s sad really. The biggest gripe was the price. If this news is true it’s now a better value for the money then the Premium 360 with HDMI and you still want to bitch. No overheating problem to worry about either. The new chip in the 360, if you can find one with the new chip, has not been proven to be trouble free…… YET.
Better games? The 360 don’t have better games, they have more games. Most aren’t worth playing. If you want a huge selection of games stick with the PS2. You’ll save a lot of money as well. PS3 has had some great games here in the last month and has plenty of good games coming.
Sony’s problem is they need to stop giving release dates. They can’t seem to meet a deadline to save their ass for some reason. Add 3 months to every release date they give and that’s when the product will hit the shelves.
I do agree that Sony needs to give people a choice of what they want in a bundle instead of assuming everyone has Hi Def and wants a Blue Ray movie. I would prefer a game or controller as well. I don’t have a Hi Def TV yet and the movie would be pointless to me.

As for the price, at least they are working it down. The thing is that if they get the console down to a low enough price, they may/will be losing money on them but they make up for it with the game sales to the now larger customer base that could afford to get the console because of the drop. I still probably won't get one for awhile though because I would rather get a truck now and put a homemade jet engine in the back :D

They are not losing as much money as they were during launch. They have took out the emotion chip that cut cost & also the Blue laser Diodes price are down also & cutting back 20gig saves also.I have a 60gig & i can tell you that 40gigs for the PS3 is more than enough.I have only used 18gigs since i got my system at launch.

Cmon lets cut Sony a little slack they have cut there system price 200 dollars in less than a year thats unheard of.What more could you ask from them.

Pure fanboy

He's not acting like a fanboy, hes actually right, cut Sony some slack, they cut the price and are releasing versions cheaper for consumers in LESS than a year from it's launch date.

For all you noobs out there. 40GB is an amazing idea. Still enough space to download tons of demos and such, plus, you can always upgrade your HDD now, or when your 40GB gets full.

The movie thing, its true, Sony is being stupid and not giving consumers what they want (except price drops) like extra controller or game, but they are doing the best they can.

$399 USD is a STEAL for a PS3, think about what your getting, if your an actual OWNER like me, you'll understand why $399 is a steal.

And i'm sure Sony doesnt want to lose anymore money than they already have, thats why they chose Spider-Man 3. Everyone loves Spider-Man, Everyone Loves Hi-Def, and Sony loves that it's a SONY Production movie, which cost them nothing to throw in the movie. It's a win-win for everyone lol

I think this is going to actually destroy M$ 360, if not, make it extremely hard for them.

Comment by: kyo28 (Oct 03, 2007 04:02)

I also don't see any reason to complain regarding Sony anymore. They are lowering the price low enough, considering what's under the hood. On top of that, you get a working console with very low chances of breaking down, unlike one of its competitors.

So all in all, I'm pretty happy the way they are managing the PS3.

I reckon they should release one without an HDD, then the buyer can stick whatever one they want in it without having to pay for the original one as well.

sony are making a killing by swapping out the hard drives as it is convincing ppl that they are getting a good deal by having another 40gig or more for the extra $100 but in reality, the seagate hard drives cost around $20 and to source for sony the difference is less than $1 between the 60 or 100 gig. the smaller hard drives cost more to source than the large ones, its a publicity public relations marketing scam to make ppl believe sony are right.

the reason for the price drop is several things but most disgusting of all is that the newer ps3 will be made by FoxConn, and i'm sure you remember the uk undercover reporters for the Mail on Sunday, exposing the company for using sweatshop, slave labour and paying their staff less than $50 a month and the demanding half of it back for the board and bedding they had to sign up to to work for the company. There was full colour pictures of the squalid conditions of the workers and exposed every slave labour aspect of the company but unfortunately, foxconn are acting within their countries laws, but is it right for these ppl to be exploited so sony can make a profit?

in fairness many companies use foxcann because of the very low labour costs.

another other reason is that the emotion engine ps2 chip has been removed and B/C in the uk sucks. and they are concentrating not on b/c but new titles so don't be selling your ps2.

And yet the latest (non bug fixing) update still added new games to the compatibility list, despite the fact that it is now of a lower priority it is still happening, regardless.
The BWC isnt even that bad, I havent had a single issue with any of the many games Ive tried so far, and many of them definitely wouldnt have been any kind of priority to Sony to get to work and yet all the "hit" games Ive tried also work. I do realize that there is still issues with many issues with BWC, and Im not trying to downplay them at all, but as far as I can tell I dont know a single person that has had any problem yet with and older games.

Yeah, I agree, for those who have had their eyes on one for a while and are determined to get one, a price reduction is very good news. I've thought about getting a PS3. I actually haven't firmly decided which console I want yet. But when comparing a possible M$ bundle of either a game or hardware to a Sony bundle of a bluray movie....Sony is not motivating me. Especially since the M$ console is cheaper, has better games right now and has a larger HDD anyway. Yeah, I'm still going to complain. Because they haven't reached me as a customer. I've entertained buying a PS3....but I want a console for the games, not a movie that I've already seen on the big screen. I'm not hating on Sony. I just know what I want personally, and they haven't come close to offering it yet.

Maybe I'm the minority, but this bundle does nothing for me. Just not impressed. I fart in its general direction. -(=3<3

Dude listen to yourself you upset because of what Sony didn't issue you in a bundle.Don't you think that real peaty & i mean real peaty. The two main issue people like me had with Sony was price & games they are half way there & people still cutting them don't this is so crazy. Some buyers are just big ass whining baby's.

@24Lover - Read more carefully next time. I'm not being petty. Maybe I study the pro's and con's very carefull before making a decision, but that is because I own a home, have 2 kids and I'm expecting a new kid this coming Summer, so I budget carefully. When I compare a M$ bundle with a PS3 bundle, the M$ bundle is more attractive. Since I don't want a bluray movie, the bundle is worthless to me. I am interested in getting the most for my dollar, like most people are. I don't see Sony becoming the same price as the 360 anytime soon, since in certain aspects, it is a more superior piece of hardware. Since the PS3 is still more expensive after the price drop, I would still have to shell out more more $$$ to get controllers and games. If a game was bundled, that's one less thing I need to open my wallet for, so I would personally feel like I was getting something worthwhile for that pricetag. A controller would be even better. I find wireless controllers very expensive. It took me a while to buy them all for my PS2.

And I'll say it again, since you didn't read it all.....I'm not hating on Sony. I will correct my previous comment about complaining. I'm not complaining....I'm thinking about it carefully so that I can make a decision based on my budget. Sony just hasn't won me over with this offer.

Thats your words you sound like a real confused buyer 1 the 40 gig PS3 will be cheap than the 360 elite.2 the 360 premium version doesn't have a bigger HD than the 40gig PS3 its only 20gigs.But lets be honest i have a wife & two boys(1 in college) if 50 dollars make or break your budget then you really need to re-think getting a console at all.I'm not trying to be rude but thats Facts of life.

ROFL!

And who ever said anything about the Elite? I'm comparing $349 to $399. Maybe I had the specs mixed up, I'll give you that. And yes, $50/controller is a lot to me. And $50/game is also. But don't worry, I'll make it work. Thank you for the sound financial advice though. Yes, I'm aware of how life works. I wrote some inaccuracies in the comparisons, but maybe I just didn't write any of my post clearly, because you missed the point I was making. I know this because I'm the one trying to make it. You like to write a lot though, I'll give you that. A BLURAY MOVIE DOES NOTHING FOR ME PERSONALLY. I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT YOU OR ANYBODY ELSE. JUST ME. IT'S MY OWN PERSONAL SITUATION "DUDE."

lol....ok, go ahead and get the last word in because I'm done. This is just becoming silly :-P

All ima say is isnt this what so many people been crying for. They are finally willing to lower their standard to get down to the customers request for a cheaper PS3 system. I didnt read every comment knowing that most of the PS3 bashers/haters whom always come out when their is a positive PS3 article would find a reason to hate this. Also to those worried about the HD space you can always upgrade a PS3 hard drive your self so thats not a big deal the big deal is how low they will make this price so be happy that they are willing to do this because i am.

Sony should change the layout of their compatibility page, it looks there are only about 20 games per letter. MAybe something that says there are currently xxxxx fully compatible, xxxxxx with minor issues, xxx with major issues. This would be more useful, and a search facility.

I agree with you. I do have HD-Tv's but i could careless for a Spiderman 3 Blu-ray movie. A controller or game would be perfect to introduce this system with the price drop. Sony is to caught up on winning a format war then making their system a dominate one. Its true that it will be around for a long time but still the whole point of making a game system should be to introduce better quality games rather then focusing on movies. Hopefully if this rumor is true I will get one of these before they change their minds.

I think he's being sarcastic :) and for good reason, if they do the exact same thing that they did with the UMD but for BD, its not going to help the format much. UMD failed mainly because it was a PSP only format that had no other form of player/reader/writer, it really was a waste of time for Sony to try it as a movie format.

I actually agree with you more often that not, theres just something about how you write that makes you seem like a fanboy, not really in a bad way but yea...

Your basically a reasonable fanboy, able to see both sides, and as you said "dont have tunnel vision". You actually remind me a lot of me in the way you post.

40GB should be more than enough. The frequency at which new demos find their way onto the PS3 Store ensures you'll never fill the hdd anyway....

This is a pretty good deal actually, the only thing I have an issue with the PS3, is that in Australia, PS3 games are hell expensive, they cost 120 dollars (90 US dollars)! Besides that, pretty good I reckon.

How are they making a killing if they still make a loss per console? all they are doing is trying to minimize their loss. Look at it from a business point of view, look at it logically, if you were selling a product would you continue to sell the first gen model and lose out on money? Yeah didnt think so.
