Xbox 360 sees sales boost in August

According to figures collected by the NPD Group, the Xbox 360 saw a strong sales boost in August, most likely driven by the recent price drops on the console and upcoming hype for Halo 3.

For the month the 360 sold 276,000 units, a hefty jump from the 170,000 sold in July. The boost means the console outsold the PS2 and PSP for the month, the first time that has occurred in quite some time.

On August 8th, Microsoft cut the price across the board on their console and the strategy seems to be working. That, mixed with the hot selling new Madden title and the upcoming Halo 3 title could mean a couple more good upcoming months for Microsoft. The console sold almost double the amount that Sony did for the month with their PlayStation 3.

microsoft fanboys are so easy to manipulate.bungie puts out halo and everyone loves it and then they get these nerds to hype the other 2 up when they really do suck.i mean come on the sniper in that game is worse than modern snipers.you can see the bullet flying which is completely medieval.lmao and the failure rate :D cant wait to see some broken xbox 360s.have your halo 3 pffff

Halo 3 is not, as noted, the only reason for the recent sales boost. Its a combination of a (small) price cut and the soon-to-be released titles of Madden, which is an extremely popular game, and Halo 3.

I think however, that it would be safe to say the vast majority of people who pre-ordered the Halo 3 already own a 360 and so its release wouldn't have helped the August sales much.

Personally I would think to truly see the impact Halo 3 has on console sales you should look at the September sales, when they are released.

EDIT: If my calculations are correct this means the sales of the XBox 360 increased 162% over the previous month. I am not sure if my calculations are correct but 276,000/170,000 = ~1.62 or 162%.

I wonder what kind of a boost Brawl is going to give the Wii sales in November. :P

Ok i see you dont like halo thats fine but that dont change the fact that its bigger than anything coming any time soon on the ps3.and lets talk about the fail rate its true that a lot of 360s are crap but but atleast microsoft is trying to make it better for the people buy extending the warrenty and if it craps out it will get fix .but thats not good enough for fans of the mighty ps3.great games are steady rolling out on the 360 and you sony fanboys are waiting for good games and dont give the famouse bull line that goes like this the 360 had a head start well the ps3 been out almost a full year and what you got in that year war hawk come on dude thats it.and the 360 version of madden 08 was leaps and bounds better.and rb6 vegas and so and so on.

I own a PS3 and a 360. Think about it. How many playable games are there for PS3? I own 1 PS3 game and 20 360 games. I for one am glad I own a 360 cause I would have traded my PS3 in by now. Maybe when sony stop fussing about blu-ray and start supporting thier games console. There might be some games. I welcome all new 360 owners. Its the best decision you have made this year!

I have played the Beta & i can tell you that its nothing more than Halo 2.5 & a lot of people that was part of the beta feel the same way i did im damm sure they couldn't have changed that much in the game in just a few months.I traded my 360 in because 360 been on the market for almost 2 years & they have 2 killer apps thats piss poor if you ask me with horrible Hardware at least PS3 owner can rest to sure there game isn't going to die on them.I was the most rabbit Microsoft fanboy but i have really open my eyes to all the crap that Microsoft has done there are no better than Sony.

Thanks you just proved my point after two year & investing roughly 300.00 for a gaming system & 100 buckets for online all you can come up with is 8 games.Lets be fair 360 first year there was only 3 titles worth playing.Dead Rising,Saints Row & Gears of War.Look were PS3 is at with months to go before the PS3 is even a years old.

If you look at this list i did it compared to what 360 had its first year.There is no question that PS3 at this time have a better selection of games then 360 had in its first year.As a former 360 owner this was one of many reason why i traded my 360.Your right 360 does have a lot of games but how many of those are really proven games.MS can boast about how many games they have but really how many are really worth the money? Let be honest there is only one killer app out between the two console & thats G.O.W.This is my opinion & a lot of people that i know feels the same way that MS not having a very big First party is killing them & will hurt them in the long run,Thats why Sony not to worry about the 360 because once the PS3 trim there price & add a little more games 360 isn't going to be getting this royal treatment there getting now from third-party dev's.

This is what I hate about M$ fanboys. They always overlook that the PS3 hasn't been out for even a full year yet, and that it uses new technology that the devs are also new to(Blu-Ray). Xbox uses DVD-9's, which isn't a problem... yet.

And about the "Oops" program, if I had a 360 and it broke, I'd want a ne one right away, not the same system returned 1-2 weeks later with referbished stamped all over it.

Just my 2 cents...

It took some of my friends to really get me to realize this because after G.O.W came out on the 360 i was really loving my 360 but after that i really have felt a let down from MS,no game even came close to what that game had to offer & going to be almost a year since it was released & MS going to release the full version for PC thats a slap in the face.

My friends are the reason I'm not getting a 360... and they all have one. They're so diehard, especially one guy where Halo 3 to him is like the return of Jesus. Besides, out of all of the games there is out for the 360, I don't like 1 exclusive. No, not even GoW. PS3 so far is up by 2.5, and it looks like they have a pretty decent line-up of games, where of course M$ is just focusing on Halo 3. Plus, seeing I'm a cheap guy, tere's no way in hell I'm gonna pay to play with a bunch of immature 2-year-olds. The PS3 is more money, but it also has more features which at least I'm gonna use...

Gotta have that GOW3 >:) GT5 too :)

what is with all the M$ hate going on around here.the 360 is not the bad of a thing it has some good games and a very solid online system.its not free but it is very good.as a ps3 owner i can say that the online for the 360 is much much better than the ps3.and some might say that sonys online is better that is a matter of opinion.yes we all know that the 360 has a fail rate but its still selling so that means people still want a 360.now not to put the ps3 down its just that some people dont want to wait for games.

bottom line is this its your money buy what you like.if you got the extra cash buy both.

Guess what, Madden was also released on the PS3, and they are exactly the same. And those two games are exactly the same to the xbox and ps2 versions of the game except with slightly less graphics. The reason there is a boost in sales is because of the drop in price, just like the PS3 had a sales boost when they dropped their price. I doubt there are 360 sales because of Halo 3 already because I believe there is a special Halo 3 version of the 360 coming out and if you are going to buy the system for one game, you might as well go all out.

Halo is ok but it still doesn't change the fact that people like my self that dropped 400.00 bills for a game console had it crap out completely after 6 months or less. I've never owned anything other then an Xbox and was stoked when they tauted the 360 to be the end all of game consoles. Now like myself there are thousands of people with jacked up conoles that can't even play games unless they suck it up and drop more money into a marginal at best console. Who cares what new game Microsft is releasing. The only thing my and thousands of other 360 consoles play are red lights!!!

Hahaha, ur right saltynuts, I guess he did pull all those games out of his azz seeing that i have never heard most of them. Well I own a ps3 and an xbox360, both systems are great but right now my 360 is definitely winning. I mean I have waaay more games on my 360 than for my ps3
crackdown,gearsofwar, saints row, lost planet, dead rising, condemned, command&conquer3, and recently shadowrun and bioshock. Not to mention all the new ones that are coming out such as halo3, mass efect, fable 2, and many more, I also play all my arcade games, stf2 mk2, bomberman, sonic, geometry wars, and more. I also see movies, play demos and still play my normal xbox games. For ps3 i got resistance fall of man, motorstorm, and untold legends, they are fun but they get boring..also when i play resistance, or motorstorm, it feels very weird that the controller doesnt rumble, I love rumbling and I hate that the controllers dont rumble, it feels empty. Well for me the xbox360 is way better than my ps3 and will continue to be better, especially since many more games are coming out.

dont u feel dumb now that 360 has no 08 lineup and that ps3 is killing it worldwide and that dualshock3 is out.DAMN 360 is done.i have 360 elite and i only have cod4 for it.halo 2.5 is shit so is gears.lost planet is on ps3 too and so is saints row 2.metal gear and killzone are the best looking games looknig to destroy 3shitty.
