40GB PlayStation 3 coming to the US in November?

DVDBack23 @ Oct 08, 2007 22:50 | 42 comments

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the 40GB PlayStation 3 model is on its way to the US, following its debut in the UK later this week.

Citing an "industry source" as well as a major game retailer, the Reporter says the 40GB model will retail for $400 USD and have the same features as its brother model in the UK meaning less USB ports and no backwards compatibility for PS2 games.

Last week we reported that leaked Best Buy internal documents showed the 40GB model was coming to the US but without a price or release date. The Reporter says it will hit the US by early November.

I just don't see what the big deal is because if you were able to play PS2 games on PS3 im sure it will be something else everyone would be crying about Sony didn't do, I see it like this, if you have a ps2 already and you have a ps3 im sure you have that ps3 hooked to a HDTV with lots of connections, if not why have a ps3 with a crappy Tv? I know alot of underground gamers like full round compatibility or just able to play their older games on a newer system, but Sony is losing game sale so I guess they are trying to boost sales with no PS2 able to play on the PS3. I think the price is worth getting a PS3 that I might be doing now since the price has gone down enough......Oh btw go 360

Sony has sold over 100 million PS2 so whats the big deal? Your buying a PS3 not PS2,must people already own a PS2 so keeping it would be good but all the major titles are coming to PS3 not PS2.Some people on this board never had any intent to buy a PS3 from the start, thats why they are whining like a little girl.Do us all a favor if you no going to buy one just shut-up & don't post. There are a lot of people that are looking forward to buying this system like me.

Your spending 300+ to get a system that was made with quality and BWC in mind(MS 360 less so) oh sorry we are dropping features because we can, sorry no excuse.... I refuse to put up with the anal carnage corporate mentality, either they deliver or I boycott their sorry asses.

I understand you at lease you come with a valid reason but some people are totally over reacting Sony never said they was stopping BC.You can get a 80 gig version that has the software emulation.Which will be down to 499 when all the 60gig version are gone.

Quote:
As we have mentioned on several occasions, our engineering resources are now focused on developing new and innovative features and services for the PS3 and, as a result the 40GB model does not have backwards compatibility with PS2 titles.

The current PS3 system software and future updates will continue to support backwards compatibility for the current 60GB and 80GB models, and publishers can check their new PS2 titles to ensure they play on the 60GB and 80GB models.

I have to say this you, will be boycotting for a longtime bc no company puts out a perfect product without someone crying over what it can or cant do, understand you have your own opinion but not all people worry about those problems they just wont buy or they will.....Its the take it or leave it

Zippydsm I understand what you are saying but for some of the people that just dont care about ps2 able to play on ps3 and only worry about price this makes me or anyone else prephaps now buy one, me personally havent had ps2 since the first xbox so I have no reason for playing ps2 games on ps3.....Companies do stuff like this all the time like laser disc then dvd and now blu ray and HD dvds, we as consumers will either buy it or to say the hell with it that is our choice. It depends on how may people will buy it to see how the company will answer those demands.....Sony may well be making a big mistake but that a gamble these companies make. I agree on what you are saying and I think Sony should have never made a damn blu ray player in a game console to sell movies and not games. Here they want people to buy games but they are adding spiderman 3 with a gaming console? Least M$ added kin kong if you bought the HD player.

You can't even buy a standalone HDDVD player for 250 much less a BD Player and gaming system combined. I'm not arguing the format war here I'm just saying cost wise 400 ain't bad.

- It's $600 right now.

There is nothing official to be said on what will happen to the price except for this repeated fanclub rumour that it might be reduced later.

But that's all it is, mere rumour (wishful 'thinking'?) and no matter how often they repeat it it does not make it fact.

- Er, yes you can.

The Toshiba HD A2 HD DVD stand-alone is currently on sale for $205 on Amazon USA.

Comment by: hughjars (Oct 09, 2007 16:30)

BTW this is disputed news too.

There are several sites saying Sony have no plans to bring the 40gb PS3 to the USA atm.

Comment by: djeazyg (Oct 09, 2007 16:55)

Here we go again.... Bash, Bash, Bash. This is all RUMERS that you've got your pantys in a knot over. Nobody knows what Sony is going to do untill they do it. Not even the fan club. You guys really need a hobby. You all could try playing video games. Works for me. Oh... Sorry... I see your too busy complaining about them to play them.

Well teh fact of the matter is we are gettign a 400-500 range PS3 and its reasonable to see that it will be the 40 no BWC PS3,since its a fact europe got the no hardware BWC PS3 first, if they can sale well at a higher price and lower features there they can do it anywhere it seems.....

Actually its listed at 229.88 on amazon and in the description it doesn't say it includes a 7th gen hd gaming system. Go figure. So for the money 400 still ain't bad.

Comment by: ZippyDSM (Oct 09, 2007 18:00)

and for about 450 you can hobble together a 360 with a HDVD player :P

I want to see better deals and better quality from both, both Sony and MS are banging the deal mule pretty hard... MS needs to finish up with the hardware issues open up the HDD sony needs to quit dckign with the consumer and release a solid PS3(same as the other PS3 only smaller HDD) unit that dose not cost a mint(under 500).

- Don't just look at the Amazon supply, it's another 2 suppliers listing them as brand new further down the page.
'wsuraptor' and 'nineriver' both @ $207.
You can even get refurbs for $187.

But today it's updated up a couple of points to $207, not $205.

Either way it's nothing like $250.

Originally posted by OhCrap:

- Er, what's that got to do with anything.

Your point was about an HD DVD stand-alone's price.

You're the one who brought this up & said you couldn't get an HD DVD stand-alone for $250.

You can.

So why now bring some silly comment about the PS3 into this?

.....and what's the point of it seeing as how it's got bu*ger all in the way of games?

Originally posted by OhCrap:

- We're all entittled to our opinions.

If you think the basic version of 'the game console with no games' is worth £299/$400 then rock on.

Originally posted by ZippyDSM:

- Are you sure?

Cos if you're going 'bargain basement on one you surely ought to on the other.
IIRC the new HDMI 'Arcade' 360 & the XBox 360 HD DVD add-on don't come to $450.

This just in: New Sony PS3 Holiday package with Betamax and 5.25 Floppy drives (so you can store all your Kilobytes of data and watch the latest Hollywood flicks... as late as 1984!) It also runs on an Intel 486DX2! (With floating point instructions!) The system will also come with an updated pack-in of an Atari classic, E.T.!

To further cut costs, Sony representatives have stated that this new version of the PS3 will also not include USB ports, WiFi, ethernet ports or any hardware that will allow the system to connect to the outside world. HDMI, Component, S-Video and Composite connections were also left out of the equation as the system will need an RF adapter (sold separately) to connect to your SDTV.

A new version of the DualShock controller supporting rumble will be packaged with the system, though Sony was mum on how it will connect to the console. (Our sources say that the cord is not detachable from the PS3.)

Sony is already filling orders from retailers, and hopes to have this bundle on store shelves before the holiday season. Aptly named the "Playstation Home" bundle, (you can only play this version at "home") Sony is targeting the Xbox Arcade bundle and Nintendo Wii with an entry price of $250.

Comment by: emugamer (Oct 10, 2007 12:28)

PS2 games look like crap on a high def television. Regardless of the [sarcastic]upscaling[/sarcastic] that can be done. And you really can't fully appreciate a PS3 game on a standard television. I'm sure that Sony realizes that more and more homes will be going the way of HDTV as time passes. People will realize that the backwards compatibility will look like garbage and not even care anymore. The PS3 is a high def piece of hardware made for high def viewing. Who cares if there are less USB ports? Unless somwhere down the line they are used for a popular game, and for some reason, Sony fails to remember that they cut out some ports and a lot of people would not be able to play the game.

I couldnt agree with you any more right now. I look at it like this if you hate any of these companies so bad why in the hell would you even comment on it. Its really stupid to get bent out of shape over something you will never buy so whats the whole point of complaining if your not interested in what they offer?

why not just get any PS3 and get a large capacity sata notebook hd? i have no ideas as how to tramsfer data from an existing PS3 hd to a high capacity one, but before i even turned on my new PS3 i installed a 160gb. what i fear is that in one of the upcoming mandatory updates we will all loose backward compatability.

Sony is back tracking on what the PS3 should be, I can easily see them limiting HDD size and linking it to a upgrade kit or worse yet a premium PSN plan, sony needs to step off the throats users befor its to late.
