Sony releases PlayStation 3 1.92 update

Dela @ Sep 05, 2007 00:08 | 9 comments

Sony has quietly released a small update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) console that improves backwards compatibility with PlayStation 2 (PS2) titles. "New for 1.92: Playability status with the PS3 system has changed for some PlayStation 2 format titles. To check on the latest status, visit the search site for compatible titles (coming soon)," the PlayStation 3 update page reads.

A search of an updated backwards compatibility site returns different results based on which hardware model of PlayStation 3. The 60GB version and 80GB versions of the PS3 in the United States include different hardware. The 80GB version has had its PS2 hardware stripped, meaning it depends on software updates to maintain a level of backwards compatibility with older titles.

This update also increase the sixaxis response, making it faster to react to your action, but i guess not many would care for such a small update. (except for the guys with the EEchip taken out)

in other news sony release warhawk on psn and only 1 account is made available, deeming your brother and parents in your household all pirates because of the DRM embedded into the download limiting its usage and leaving your fellow house holders needing to own their own ps3 to enjoy the game, smart move sony!

soon sony movies will be pay per population of the household, so they can squeeze as much revenue out of the population as they can.

Following is a statement from Sony regarding the DRM on Warhawk…

Statement

In order to protect our investment in this ground-breaking game and maintain our ability to offer a 24-hour free online gameplay experience, SCE will be utilizing an alternative Digital Rights Management (DRM) policy for the downloadable version of Warhawk. The downloadable version of Warhawk, which will be available from the PLAYSTATION Store on Thursday 30th August, will be directly tied to the registered PLAYSTATION Network (PSN) account that purchased the game. Only that registered PSN account will be authenticated for gameplay. You will still be able to download the game to up to five PS3 systems. However, if a user downloads Warhawk onto a different machine, he / she will only be able to play via the original PSN user account on that machine and could not play on a different machine for 24 hours. This does not affect the Blu-ray Disc version of the game which will be available at retail later in September.

I installed the 1.92 upgrade and now Motor Storm freezes from time to time with the image on the screen. I tried exiting once from motor storm and it crashed to a blank screen but the lights on the unit showed that it was still on. After reseting it I was trying to play a DVD and it crashed to a blank screen.
I'm reading reports on the official forums of issues with Warhawk and logging into PSN.

do you have a specific complaint about 1.92 or are you speaking in general. I overall really like the ps3 when it works. I'm not so happy when they don't test.
