Well the WII has expanded to the logical markets around modern gaming the uber casual and the non gamer, this and getting some for the casual core(games in general both hard and soft brained).

Sure the Wii may be selling like crazy but most of those people buying those Wii's aren't gonna be pushing the software sales on that console which may prove to be not so good for Nintendo. I really think people are buying those Wii's and they are collecting dust after the initial amazement is over. Plain and simple, Microsoft and Sony benefit the most because they're going for the hardcore and average gamer, NOT old people like your mom and dad who'll probably not be buying more than 1 or two games. That's why you benefit more by marketing your system more towards true gamers, not this so called "new demographic" of people. Oh yea, kudos to Microsoft for hanging in there especially after being on the market for so long and still seeing success.

and still the WII has a better attach ate despite that logic, isn't reality grand? serving the mindless masses only makes your product worse and the whole industry has become worse because they are pushing what an be deved in a reasonable amount of time..

Probably all those people with rrod machines and no warranty getting them in while they can afford. Price will likely go up again in a couple of months for silly season.

Hardware failure and locked hardware, if it did not have locked hardware the PS3 would not be bashing its balls in sale wise, they could have done much more as a media device first off the locked HDD is stupid the data issues for stream data to the tacted on HDMI and up converting issues could have all been handled better MS tacted on upgrade after upgrade and didn't bother just making a proper console from the start.

The 360 is a Frankenstein of a console with upgrades tacted on almost yearly to make up for the lack of foresight from the start.

This is why I think the 360 has failed its crated so many issues for itself it can not maintain a profit and thus fails as a solid platform no matter how much money MS has tossed into it to keep it afloat, now with that said they have made some headway for the brand despite the inability to fix the Gdamn hardware issues but thats where stealing PC games and having a ton of money come in to play :P.

Now the WII has done well on profit but its lacking in real games for real gamers its not "failed" in anything really its just adapted to the changing market.

The PS3 has managed to keep to the media/gamer focus without losing itself completely to debt like MS has its built a forward thinking console despite supposed issues with the architecture that only really make it alil more potent than the 360 than truly stronger than it.

The PS3 had a rocky start but has manged to right itself despite the BWC issues MS is still in a state of fcking itself while the WII is on top raping them all .

Have to agree with you on a lot of that. The locked HDD is a bonehead idea and i would really love to be able to load and run a lot of other applications on the Xbox360. Recently played MGS3 on PS3 and it was nice. All the movie scenes were made possible with the data storage of Blue-ray. Graphically it had some of the best graphics i have seen period to date but it wasnot anything that the Xbox couldnot reproduce onscreen. Online service is horrible as it is one of my cousins only complaint on the PS3. Xbox live is one of the things that gives Microsoft an advantage in that category and i feel that the biggest think hurting the xbox360 sales is hardware failure (Legend of the RROD), instead of the locked hardware. As far as the supposedly PS3 longevity we will just have to wait and see but i can tell you for sure the PS3 has no other choice to last about 10 years as is has billions in losses. Better hope it last as long as they claim it will with the game developers.

The 360 would have been number 2 if they used foresight and focused on the future more with a tad more modularity it would have been all win for the 360 make the DVD drive replaceable (with the 200$ a pop HDVD and BR drives) have full user control over the storage(with a simple 50$ kit), there is so much they could have done to make themselfs a true solid media brand but they went and fcked it all up trying to nickle and dime for every mistake they made.


How much is MS in debt on the 360 and Xbox brand total? I know the PS3 is about 3B the totals for Xbox was either 25M or 25B I can't remember.

Anyway MS had to build a solid backbone for online thus why live was a subscription but its not needed now adays and if it were not for the ail rate they would have made it free already....they should switch to points for free downloads for a buck you can download 1GB of free downloads, something anythign than the stale subscription method....


With movies gaining a profit of billions I do not think the PS3 is in danger of failing from debt neither is the 360 for that matter as the whole of the company makes in 5-20X the loss on the one product alone, but it dose go to over all direction they took and the mistakes they made.

Looking at the PS3 and the 360 as benchmarks for the industry the next Xbox console will probably be 2-3X what the 360 is putting it over the PS3 but no worse than what the PS3 is to what the 360 is.

The 360 is going to have to be replaced or overhauled in at least 4 years maybe 3, they could get away with upgrading it and name it 360 2 or even Xbox 2, have it with a better mobo,ramm CPU and GPU and perhaps if they can get their heads out of their ass a unloked HDD this will give them time to build a true successor to the Xbox brand and give dvs enough room to easily devs a game for it and the PS3 and current PCs, but anyway you look at it the 360 is dieing.

The WII is maintaining but I feel it will have a harsh reality check in the next 5 years. While the PS3 should do well enough in the media,HD and game niches, sony has the next 5 years sewn up IMO now around the 5 year mark give or take a year or 2 the Xbox brand will reinvent itself that will be when the PS3 will be getting true competition as it is now the 360 is waning even with these spikes now and then.

It will be nice to see the Xbox brand get more Japanese games and this will help sustain it alot they are making head roads with that but they are going to need to do something in the next 3-6 years and I would hope its a BWC ready 1.5 system rather than another new over priced 2.0 system... there is no telling what MS will do.


Also another thing about the WII they made it to amke profit up front so its mid to final years wont be so great the others(even MS) are aiming for the long haul even tho the 360 is already falling apart, should be interesting to see how MS handles the upgrades they have planed for it be nice if Sony would put BWC back in the PS3 but its as good as its going to get unless they pull a MS and put more ramm in new units, I will be surprised if Nin dose anything major I know they are adding DVD support through firmware and they are working on a 2.0 controller that offers better motion sensitivity but I doubt they will add HDMI or do anythign else with the hardware.


I don't kid when I say the 7 the generation console war is more interesting than the games, the players are doing well despite themselfs and it makes the "game" more interesting.

Its a shame the product itself is not really improving any...

Some things to consider for attach rates constant flow and spikes, if you have a steady attach rate that means you are selling a constant amount of games if you have large spikes like in the 360s case you have more of a niche market buying in large groups around the release of a hot title rather than a constant flow of titles.

The reason this assists the WII is because it's sold like crazy and at least 1-2 extra games are sold with unit.

Also MS has admitted a 60% fail rate at the assembly line on the early 360s for the first 1-3 years that plus the 30% fail rate on the released unis drags the 360s numbers down by 30%.

Its funny from what I have been reading if the 360 didn't screw itself over it would have almost twice the attach rate it has now.

The WII is doing insanely well for the wanna be it is.....

I feel what you are saying but truth is that the PS3 goes further into debt with each console sold as Wii has been turning a profit and Xbox360 turns profit just with the console sell itself. That means the price of PS3 willnot be lowered anytime soon to compete with the Wii or Xbox360. I too think the last i researched that Microsoft has the highest attach rate and with GOW2(which will not be released on PC) and Fable2 about to drop, consider that PS3 has the weakest library of games,the recent price cuts for 360, and the holiday season approaching things dont look good for the PS3. Wii leads with Xbox360 in second place. Sony started gaining some ground on Microsoft but that has come to a end. PS3 needs to work on lowering the production cost of its console. As you said that Microsoft really hurt themselves with the RROD but that makes it worst that Xbox360 can outsell the PS3 with a bad reputation after the RROD situation. If Microsoft keeps a lower priced console, bigger library, and better online services, i dont think that the PS3 will ever move up from the number 3 spot. Sony even said it will be a couple more years before they can make quarterly profits. Picture it 2 years from now with a PS3 on the shelve for $279 and a xbox360 for $179 with a bigger more vast library of games. Which one will they buy first????? Sony's achilles heal is the productions cost which account for 3.4 Billion dollars in debt since the launch of the PS3. The question is if they continue down their current path will they ever make it up. Microsoft is making more grounds including the loss of 1 billion for the RROD and repairs. Think about it. Look at the history. PS1 then PS2 dominates. All had the best library of games and exclusives and usually decent prices for their consoles when compared to the competitors. The only exception i see is the Wii who gains so much popularity through new innovation. I mean i have played a Wii and i cant lie. It is fun as hell with the new controllers putting Nintendo back on top of videogame consoles. But as far as the PS3 i dont see it ever catching its two competitors. Higher price, less games, less exclusives are you kidding me.. If Sony could get the graphics out of the PS3 to blow away the competition they may have a chance to catch up and take the number 2 spot but i dont even think that will ever happen. I am like this you have to show me that the PS3 is more powerful instead of just telling what it is capable of. Because I ave critical thinking skills that lean me in another direction. Read between the lines you have more 360 games int eh used market, you have less as many working units on the street, hell some games like Halo ep 3 had a 20% fail rate on their discs!

You add up this and more and the supposed 7.X attach rate the 360 has for is more like a 5.X. and if you think about it more thats on about 30% less of the units reported world wide witch is not bad.

Now here's my final trick to prove I am right

WII total software sales 5X 32M= 160M games total
360 total software sales 7X20M = 140 games total now further add the 30% fail rate into the mix you have a real number of 98M(7X14M) to 140M(7X20M) real figures would be in between so 120ishM sounds about right.

So why are we talking about attach rates again? its the last great hidy hole of the righteous fanboy. *lick* I am a fanboy but of games and information ^_~

FYI 3B on the RROD fiasco..the "new" debt from it would make it nearly 4...


For Sony and MS its about loss management, Sony is making a profit off the PS2 still and that aids the PS3, they are making some in roads on blu ray (wait no BR is still sucking them dry LOL) that aids the PS3 at least for media and HD uses its also aiding driving the hardware R&D to be cheaper to a extent as sony is seeking to amke it as cheap as possible.

The PS3 is still growing quit nicely you see some games having whole different games on the PS3 and ported down to the others, programing is is improving as is its libary, but like the 360 they should have made the BWC a focus its stupid to me why they did not dose it matter if they buy a PS3 and run old games on it the fact they will randomly buy new games only adds to profit not take away from it.

The next 5 years will make or break the PS3 and BR price is not a huge problem its what it dose BWC is hampered, new games are slow to come, Sony is going to have to take on more debt up front in order to saturate the market better they are just going to drop it another 100 and leave it there for 2 years, frankly they are wasting factory time and cost building the low end unit they need 1 unit and focus on making it as cheap as they can without losing features.

then they can sale a elite version with a 200GB HDD and 30$ worth of points on the PSN network for 650$ give it a real sliver trim for all I care but at over 300 a console is not going to move well.

Hell they can start putting PSX games out on their network,LIVE and the WIIs VC to to bring in money, they need to diversify to put moeny into the console the console is taking out.

This is just a sign of things to come as the game industry gets more and more greedy not with pricing or money in general but with graphics and system power all this dose is create a endless vacuum thats filled with money to constantly feed the "bureaucracy" of the industry.

I believe the PS3 will manage well its only 5 million units behind the 360 and 2 milloin ahead if you factor in the 30% fail rate software sold is 92M which is pretty good for the bloated monolithic beast :P

That is my point with the production cost they cant afford to drop any prices for the ps3 as they need to and they are waiting to long to bring out the big guns like Socum, God or War3 etc.....In the next 5 years it may be too little to late.......

I am fine with my old DVD's for now i don't have the $ to go BluRay for its 5 year run! they both upscale. lemme thing? 299 or 399????? This is a recession guys! Every $ counts! if i can have a borrowing library of 100 games from friends or just 20 i would go with the 100 option! common! this i saving less to do with the BluRay in the PS3 & more to do with the minimal u need!

200.00 for a console that requires internet access in order to function and it is only going to get worse and worse and worse.

When microsoft launches there new os for the 360 this fall if you are not online with the 360 you will lose out.

At least sony and nintendo place firmware updates on there disks and do not require online service to update.

To bad microsoft does.

Throughout the years of the video game industry it has always been the norm for a company to lose money on the console right from the word go, so yeah so sony have shed loads of debt as do microsoft but that is the norm losing money on the hardware. Obviously the Wii is the only console that bucks this trend and made a profit from the get go.

I read somewhere (cant remember where now) but i believe that all the profit made from the ps2 in the last 10years has actually been already consumed by the ps3 so your definately right when you say sony are 'committed' to the ps3.

Sony maybe in massive amounts of debt however im pretty sure they knew what they were getting themselves into. After all one of the reasons why they are so much in debt is because of the inclusion of the blu-ray drive. Now if they hadnt released the ps3 with a blu-ray dirve yeah it would probably be a damn site cheaper and probably would have been a massive massive success like the ps3 however sony would probably have lost the HD format war, which would have cost them as much as the ps3 has now.

Spec for spec, unless your buying the elite version of the xbox360 your buying a sub par product compared to the ps3, and the sad fact is ppl are still buying the arcade bundle and cant see they are being taken to the cleaners by microsoft

Well i suppose this is no real suprise, cut the price and sales will go up as you would kind of expect. But whats suprising is that all that price cut yielded was a small 10,000 extra units for 1 month over the ps3, this begs the question what would happen if sony slashed the ps3 price by $100?

Throughout the years of the video game industry it has always been the norm for a company to lose money on the console right from the word go, so yeah so sony have shed loads of debt as do microsoft but that is the norm losing money on the hardware. Obviously the Wii is the only console that bucks this trend and made a profit from the get go.

blindly following the graphical goddess of shallowness will do that, it creates a situation where everything is stressed to look good it raises prices across the board and creates insane debt traps to fall into.
