EA: Sony, Microsoft will focus on hardware updates before 'PS4', 'Xbox 720'

Dela @ Sep 01, 2009 04:58 | 18 comments

Electronic Arts CEO Rich Hilleman has revealed that he expects Sony and Microsoft to develop hardware updates for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 (PS3) before they move on to the develop the true next generation of home consoles. Hilleman explains incremental changes to the systems as 'Xbox 560' and 'PlayStation 3.5', to represent a gradual move toward the next generation.

He made his comments at the Hot Chips conference in Stanford, where he said that both of the console makers had dedicated an enormous amount of resources to establish their current generation of home consoles on the market, and are not likely to rush the development of brand new home consoles in a fast changing market.

"I expected we'll see a PlayStation 3.5 before we see a PlayStation 4 and an Xbox 560 before we see an Xbox 720," said Hilleman, reported Venturebeat. "The biggest shift is how fast packaged goods games are changing and going away." Both Microsoft and Sony have been left financially bruised from the costs of marketing the home consoles on the market.

Alarm bells in general have been raised due to the costs involved in not only marketing in the industry, but also the rising costs of game development and stagnating profits for developers. Electronic Arts reportedly makes $35 on a $60 sale of a single new game, which apparently makes the average sales requirement for each title 1.1 million units just to break even.

There was mention on a tv breakfast show around a month or so ago about sony & ms expecting to get a 10 year life cycle before the next console was brought out this time round so that news ain't new,the tv show had some gaming big wig on that was visiting us down under for whatever reason, there was also mention of was it a move away from disk media to download games instead ? i can't remember,as for the sagging profit margins yeah i could understand that, what with the new graphics n' stuff it would take more time to add detail to everything & then getting the game to work right or at least iron out as many bugs as ya can & even that'd be a bugger, fix one bug & then that bug fix creates more..lol..

Edit: spell check..lol..

This is a great thing for EA because then they can grow in better game quality and their engine will become a lot stronger :)

you on about EA sports, well i suppose they cant get much worse. they are probably the worst game company in existence.

or you can just purchase their titles to get the on-line side destroyed when EA decide to turn off all their servers to make you purchase the latest version of the same title!

I just hope they get a edited for language (PG13 adverb in this context) clue about what they are doing with the next set of consoles. Offer functionally coherent HD support out of the box, Offer multi HD support out of the box,Offer proper BWC even if its a 50$ DLC purchase, Offer multiple default control options(full button mapping in the system menu pregame), Offer full mouse and keyboard support, make it easier to support bring files over from the PC to allow for game modding and customization so you can sell off the better ideas as DLC to the majority of people.

And if you can;t get a profit off a modern game perhaps its time to make them less shiny so you can save a buck, its that or double the price of games or move to digital distribution only to reduce production costs....

I think we need to replace the word 'expects' with 'hopes'. I have a distinct feeling that EA doesn't want to invest too quickly in mastering new programming techniques for future consoles.

Maybe the 360 will see some updatea but not the PS3 because EA won't allow them because their shitty Harry Potter games won't work with the updates unlike other games because they aren't made so poorly. *bleep* you EA.

Morreale - Watch the language.

edit- Oops, i didn't see any other language.

I don't even think it's possible for Sony to front the money to make a new console yet. The PS3 has a long lifespan, so I think it will be fine. They just need to get some games that stand out. You were able to tell the difference between a PS2 and an Xbox1 game back in the day because of Xbox's superior hardware. What the heck happened?

$ony, M$, and Nintendo should just focus on their next generation consoles instead of just making hardware improvements. We’ve all seen enough of these “hardware improvements” already with all of these different versions of the exact same consoles. I think were at that time now, where we should be able to play graphics demanding games such as Crysis on maxed out settings on a console, not just a PC.

milk as much money out of a console before you move on to the next. its a trend nowadays. the real reason for that trend i believe is because visual are at there stopping point. you cant make Marcus Fenix look any worse than he is.

the only real thing they can do know is install a new GPU and call it a new console. with new gpu comes new perks like added particle counts
higher AA&AF better FOV but the visuals will be pretty much the same.

Game developers have always been known to exaggerate the power of their game. If Crysis has already maxed out the PS3, it's probably due to inefficient developing. Sure, they make decent looking games, but think back to the first Crysis - it was developed so badly that a normal user was able create a mod that tweaked it to run 10-20 times faster than how it came in the box. This shows some serious developing problems in their engine, and I would bet this is going to be the same problem.

We will be having this very same discussion next year, over a different developer saying the same stupid thing. It's good publicity for a game, and obviously it works - we are all talking about it.

Nintendo would likely have the next new console as they've said NOW they want to move to HD...so they could have a WiiHD by 2011. MS & Sony aren't expected to possibly come out with a new console until closer to 2014 (unless the world ends in 2012 ;-) ).

Why do they need a new console? They need to have something new to make another console. This gen has mp3/usb support, hd and wii "touch generation". Unless the ps4 and xbox 720 include drastic technology changes (such as running games via usb) then there is no need.

Richard Hilleman is 'predicting' old news. Of course they are going to have software and hardware updates before next gen. It has already happened in the form of NXE, motherboard updates, psn updates and wii motion plus, has this guy been living under a rock or something...

Well looking at the 360 it needs a doubling of the CP speed, more FSB more ramm, ect the PS3 might be find for the next 7 years but the 360 needs an overhaul.

The nextbox needs to have a open HDD and allow for USB data storage to be used freely, I don't so much mind the whole live fee thing if the hardware is more open but they want to nickle and dime you everything little thing.....

I wont hold my breath either way MS has been cheap on revising the hardware. Though it would be nice if they refine it some and finally end the hardware failures.

Until lobbying is a hanging offense I choose anarchy!
Ah modern gaming its like modern film only the watering down of fiction and characters is replaced with shallow and watered down mechanics, gimmicks and shiny-er "people".
