Sony cuts price on 80GB model PlayStation 3

DVDBack23 @ Jul 16, 2008 17:15 | 56 comments

Despite recently denying they would be cutting the price on their PlayStation 3 console, Sony has flipped on that notion and announced at this week's E3 event that they will begin phasing out the 40GB model of the console while dropping the price of the 80GB model by $100 USD.

The higher capacity model will now retail for $399 USD, taking over the price spot that has been held by the 40GB model for some time now.

Sony's Jack Tretton says the company hopes the new price point will "attract millions of PlayStation 2 users who are on the cusp of upgrading."

The latest decision follows on the heels of Microsoft's similar decision, to phase out their entry level 20GB model and replace it with a 60GB model.

If core2kid is correct and the new model is the same as the 40GB model, with just a larger HDD, then how were people ripped off? $100 off for double the HDD space? It's an ok deal. But you can buy a 320GB HDD to stick in there (4x the size of the 80GB) for only $120. So in the end you can either have an 40GB/80GB PS3 for $400, or a 320GB PS3 for $520. So if you planned on upgrading anyway, it really doesn't matter. It really depends on why you want the HDD space. I haven't personally needed more than 13GB yet.

More proof that the new 80GB won't include B/c.

Everyone that just bought the 40GB and can still return it, DO! Wait for the 80GB to come out, You'll have a bigger HD and possibly DS3 with your system.

XBox 360 still comes out WAYYYY on top with better shading and lighting on their games, same graphics, more games, better controllers and cheaper BY A LONG SHOT, price.

I've got much respect for PS3 but it can basically drop dead. Those who invest in that system just because of the name are in for a serious wakeup when they see any and all game comparisons to the XBox.

(lynchGOP)
the 360s fail rate and very short garrentee period is so bad and plus what you said brings to question is the 360 going to start holding the ps3 back with it 9 gig disk space compaired to the 50 on bd and the ps3s processer is far from full speed as of yet they have to figure out how to use the remainder of the 8 cells in the processer you might be suprised id keep quiet for a while and see how the 360 is next year ...........

ps im not a ps3fanboy just a games fanboy

Set your RBG color level to Full and then see the difference.

the ps3 will out do the x box in therms of game content and extras regardless of graphics it inevitable ps3 has the better optical disc space the ps3 is future prof i said this elsewhere the xbox needs to upgrade the dvd drive to hd dvd and use two discs on there games that will give the total optical space of 60 gigs if you use dual layer

I doubt a new Xbox will attempt to bring HD DVD out from the dead and use it again.

then they would have to introduce a blue ray dvd tray into there range and admit defeat it the only way to stay "coherant" with the games developers like the xbox is a great itegration of online play and centralisation of this feature with xbolive and live market place all it need is an overhaul of the optical disc tray and a revamp of the cooling system and ms will have a very competitive console

Admit defeat to what? And you really think Sony will give MS what they need to be a really competetive console? They would give MS the right to use blu ray at a very high cost. A cost that may not even be worth it to MS.

And forget cooling. MS needs better hardware all-around, period. The PS3 is a freakin space heater...you can fry an egg on that George Foreman Grill. You don't see a high failure rate though. The expression "if you can't take the heat, stay out of the console business" comes to mind.

I think the 360's a better grill. No modifications needed.

Now all those RROD consoles would go back to use ;)

well then its back to the good old hd dvd idea they will have to resurect the hd for gamings sake never mind movies ms needs it to compete with sony on a long therm basis or develop a better console lets hope the 720 is comming along nicely

competition is good for the consummer it drives down costs i want sony and ms doing well so we benifet with cheeper games and more inovations online to keep use buying games it will also inprove the quality of games being produced

When will we see these out? so this probably has no bearing on the mgs bundle does it?

Comment by: 21Q (Jul 17, 2008 21:27)

Ugh, great. Now I have decided on a PS3 or a 360, purely on price. I was only reluctant on a PS3 because of the price of the 80gb model.

the mgs bundle will come down accordingly i presume unless you are in about the limeted edition gun metal ps3 and mgs4 game pack you will pay well above the odds for that sucker i saw one on ebay for over a 1000 euro witch is about 1450 dolars at the moment

YOUR NOT GETTING BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY WITH THIS MODEL!
Check online on sites. Wiki, QJ,net, everything. This is the only site saying that the new 80GB will be B/C which its not! The B/C 80GB will still be $499! Sony DID NOT cut the price of the model, they stuck with their promise, they just upgraded the HD in the 40GB to an 80GB.

Comment by: fergus100 (Jul 18, 2008 11:10)

yes but its more value for your money at the end of the day
and the 80 gig is out in ireland soon yeah i waited till the right time i think this is it !!!!!!!!!!!!

Your right the new 80 does not have BWC.Not only are you going to have 40GB of more space for that price but your going to have a Dual shock 3 controller that comes with it also.Sony is giving you more value for your money.

Comment by: 13thHouR (Jul 19, 2008 15:43)

lol, so sony are selling this unit as "new and great" with a price reduction but in reality its a publicity stunt to drum up sales with a console with less functionality, no backwards compatibility.

you all know that as time moves on the smaller hard drives cost more to purchase as they are "old" technology and seems 250 to 500gig is now the norm 80gig is very stingy seems these drives cost about £20.

sony are like a magician doing slight of hand tricks, look at this big wow while we trick you over here!

Comment by: wetsparks (Jul 19, 2008 20:33)

the reason for this is because Sony introduced the video store so to encourage people to use it, they are putting in a bigger hard drive. And since the hard drives probably cost the same or close to it, it means nothing to them manufacturing wise and more money to them by encouraging people to download movies.

Never thought of it that way but it makes a lot of sense. It probably costs less to make a 80GB than a 40GB.

it will no doubt cost the same if not less to source the 80gig drives, as 40gig drives are now a waste of time and production of this old technology will be diminishing fast in favour of current technology usage 500 or 250gig drives.

as i stated in my last post its a big illusion. as they are removing the core function of backwards compatibility and covering it up with a small increase in hard drive space.

Probably also why Microsoft dropped the 20GB Hard Drives.
