Sony cuts price on 80GB model PlayStation 3DVDBack23 @ Jul 16, 2008 17:15 | 56 comments
The higher capacity model will now retail for $399 USD, taking over the price spot that has been held by the 40GB model for some time now.
Sony's Jack Tretton says the company hopes the new price point will "attract millions of PlayStation 2 users who are on the cusp of upgrading."
The latest decision follows on the heels of Microsoft's similar decision, to phase out their entry level 20GB model and replace it with a 60GB model. |

Comment by: emugamer (Jul 17, 2008 12:00) Originally posted by blueroad: If core2kid is correct and the new model is the same as the 40GB model, with just a larger HDD, then how were people ripped off? $100 off for double the HDD space? It's an ok deal. But you can buy a 320GB HDD to stick in there (4x the size of the 80GB) for only $120. So in the end you can either have an 40GB/80GB PS3 for $400, or a 320GB PS3 for $520. So if you planned on upgrading anyway, it really doesn't matter. It really depends on why you want the HDD space. I haven't personally needed more than 13GB yet. |

Comment by: core2kid (Jul 17, 2008 15:05) Everyone that just bought the 40GB and can still return it, DO! Wait for the 80GB to come out, You'll have a bigger HD and possibly DS3 with your system. |
Comment by: lynchGOP (Jul 17, 2008 15:41) XBox 360 still comes out WAYYYY on top with better shading and lighting on their games, same graphics, more games, better controllers and cheaper BY A LONG SHOT, price.

Comment by: core2kid (Jul 17, 2008 18:27) I doubt a new Xbox will attempt to bring HD DVD out from the dead and use it again. |
Comment by: fergus100 (Jul 17, 2008 19:04) then they would have to introduce a blue ray dvd tray into there range and admit defeat it the only way to stay "coherant" with the games developers like the xbox is a great itegration of online play and centralisation of this feature with xbolive and live market place all it need is an overhaul of the optical disc tray and a revamp of the cooling system and ms will have a very competitive console |
Comment by: emugamer (Jul 17, 2008 19:29) Originally posted by fergus100: Admit defeat to what? And you really think Sony will give MS what they need to be a really competetive console? They would give MS the right to use blu ray at a very high cost. A cost that may not even be worth it to MS.

Comment by: ABMone (Jul 17, 2008 21:12) When will we see these out? so this probably has no bearing on the mgs bundle does it? |
Comment by: 21Q (Jul 17, 2008 21:27) Ugh, great. Now I have decided on a PS3 or a 360, purely on price. I was only reluctant on a PS3 because of the price of the 80gb model. |
Comment by: fergus100 (Jul 17, 2008 22:31) Originally posted by ABMone: the mgs bundle will come down accordingly i presume unless you are in about the limeted edition gun metal ps3 and mgs4 game pack you will pay well above the odds for that sucker i saw one on ebay for over a 1000 euro witch is about 1450 dolars at the moment |
Comment by: core2kid (Jul 18, 2008 05:48) YOUR NOT GETTING BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY WITH THIS MODEL!
|
Comment by: fergus100 (Jul 18, 2008 11:10) yes but its more value for your money at the end of the day

|
Comment by: wetsparks (Jul 19, 2008 20:33) the reason for this is because Sony introduced the video store so to encourage people to use it, they are putting in a bigger hard drive. And since the hard drives probably cost the same or close to it, it means nothing to them manufacturing wise and more money to them by encouraging people to download movies. |
