PlayStation Home gets delayed once again

DVDBack23 @ Apr 22, 2008 21:23 | 48 comments

Sony Computer Entertainment said this morning that the oft-delayed PlayStation Home community online service was to be delayed again, marking the third official delay since the service was announced.

The service was initially announced in July 2007 and promised to "provide users with the ability to create their own avatars and participate in a real-time virtual world," something like the popular Second Life community. At that announcement, Sony said it would be available in the fall of 2007 but then delayed it until spring of this year.

With the latest delay however comes the ability for more users to join a closed beta test. The full public beta will hit in "fall" of this year barring any other delays.

"We understand that we are asking PS3 and prospective PS3 users to wait a bit longer, but we have come to the conclusion that we need more time to refine the service to ensure a more focused gaming entertainment experience than what it is today," said Kazuo Hirai, president of Sony Computer Entertainment, in a statement.

Well whatever, GT5P still rules and I own all :)

LMAO, I loved GameSpot's review on it."It's only a Prologue." I wonder how many detectives and analysts it took the to figure that one out, as it states it in the damn title :P

Comment by: wetsparks (Apr 25, 2008 04:53)

Seeing as prologue has more cars and as many tracks as some racers out there I don't understand why people are complaining, especially when it is $20 cheaper than those other "full" games. And better to have Home work and work well than a half released piece of crap that they would have to constantly upgrade. Better to take a minor hit for delaying it than a huge hit from releasing before it is ready.

no doubt it has its good points but why play a half finished title its like watching a badly pirated movie, it just spoils the finished product.

lets hope they can sort out the ghosting cars and laggy servers. (Read the Ars Review Here)

Then suddenly one turned solid again and hit me, causing me to spin out. In another instance, I was racing someone on a straightaway when suddenly we both turned into see-through cars, and he slid over to occupy the same physical space as my car. This caused both of us to stay ghosts for a good few seconds, and let other cars pass through us. Frustrating.

The name makes this bulletproof, and the play makes it a great time, but the amount of content you get and the lack of a strong online mode makes this a buy for hardcore fans only.

see now zippy you hit the nail on the head, it will be full of sony bloggers encouraging to purchase the latest bit of furniture for the virtual home or an upgrade to a penthouse, ect that is going to be full of adds and all game statistics gathered for targeted marketing for the individual user.

what benefit is this to the user, are sony going to offer free games like nintendo do for their data trolling?

you know in secondlife you can create content yourself for free, or even sell it to other users, are sony allowing this to happen or is it just a huge revenue grab for them???

Lets not menace words here HOME is a optional version of pay sony money like the live subscription, achievements get you nit knacks for your virtual apartment, you can buy virtual goods and media and explore a VR world full of tween nub sheeples trying to be leet...really..its almost worse than the sht talking 13 yearolds on live.... but it will probably be more revolutionary than live.

@ ZippyDSM

i don't know live only pc in game chat, teamspeak and Ventrilo more of a team/guild thing than the idiots populating most of the games, i'm glad i can just block em on most titles!

ppl purchasing virtual goods, need their heads examined!

Home = sony's eyes $$.

btw here is classic ts chat: more DoTs ppl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtvIYRrgZ04

i'm sure most "real" gamers have been at the receiving end of ppl like "power of my rangers" ect...

Meh enough of it will be free and through "achievements" it wont be that bad plus its optional to fool with it all together so its already no worse or better than live.

Now when it comes to virtual goods if tis cheats to make a game more fun, better equipment/items to make a game more fun and what not its reasonable as to the enjoyment of the game, if its just top buy crap you can get with a hour or 2 worths of grinding its foolish and pointless, frankly if MMO goods is not handled in a way to make your character fly through some grind spots on the game then there is no point to it.

Home is supposed to be more than what second life is. It isn't supposed to be a get together place. It is a place for people to meet their friends, and load up a game. Warhawk will have a war room attached to talk strategy, probably a garage to load up GT, Uncharted will have a side scroller 2d action game to load out of Home like Contra and it will have stuff like ping pong tables or pool tables to pass the time while waiting for more people to come. it is pretty much supposed to a loading zone for online games, at least that is my understanding. All the while they will probably be running commercials on your virtual tv to make money, but that is easily ignored.

because it involves no coding or scripting and even less freespeach no matter how questionable it will be less than what second life is, HOME will more a VR chat world and VR goods trading place a mix of a VR world,XBL, DLC and chat.

Its still quite a accomplishment when they get it done.

Big Deal indeed!!!

No offense but i am not looking forward to the home channel for the ps3 i think sony needs to make the channel free not charge 9.99 a month plus 5.99 each piece of virtual furniture to place in your sim character's pad worse the home channel will be the only way to find people to play against online and to download demo's once it is availible leaving several lower income ps3 owners who do not have credit cards completely out of the gaming experiance what happened to we at sony are going to keep are online service free.

Free my Rear.

you're joking right, 9.99 per month, for a virtual playground full of 13 year olds all doing /dance? I'm fairly certain this is a free service funder by sony selling everyone's details off to advertisers. Just make sure when you sign up to sony's service you use a spam email not your main one but is this just futile, as sony are selling you IP address off, anyone know sony's data retention guidelines?

New Sony in-game advertising business will focus on Home

The only thing you will have to pay for is certain special types of homes and furniture...

Ever heard of Habbo?

They'll make tons of money.

Home is completely free, just all the different apartments and different furniture that isn't generic 1, 2, or 3 will cost money. And Nobrainer, we all know you hate Sony, the act is getting kind of tired. Quit acting like Sony is the only company that does this and all other are saints. For a buck any company will beat you will a steel pipe.

as i keep stating i don't "hate" sony i am against anti-consumer behaviour, sony just seem to be one of the worst offenders, do you think targeting adds at young teenagers is a correct practice or using home as a data mining tool that will sell on ALL your details to marketing companies, kids are a soft target and this is what home is about.

the links i provided are about the real use for home, and are relevant to this topic as ppl should know both sides of the service not just the one that sony projects to the mass media and the public.

if playstation don't hurry up with ps home then they won't nesseceraly ever catch up with the amount of people on XBL and seen as i have both ps3 and xbox 360 that i am online with both of them i think that XBL is a much beter service than PSN but maybe if they hurry the bloody hell up with ps home and they let people have a go on it in game etc. then they mite be able to sway people to buy a ps3 instead of an xbox 360
