Sony dismisses rumors of 80 GB PlayStation 3

DVDBack23 @ Mar 29, 2007 14:34 | 14 comments

Sony has filed a request with the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) asking for a class 2 permissive change that included details of some minor tweaking to the PlayStation 3s Bluetooth features. Amongst the models that were listed with the filing included the currently available 20GB and 60GB consoles but surprisingly, a new 80GB model as well.

Sony however, has dismissed any rumors that an 80 GB model is on its way. A Sony spokesperson stated, "The 80GB we're not making any comment on, but we don't have any plans at the moment."

I do believe however, that with the launch of the Xbox 360 Elite it is only a matter of time until a PS3 with a larger HDD, possibly 120 GB to match that of the Elite, is available in stores.

yeah, i remember looking at the original plans and it was definetely just a 2.5" sata drive. maybe they've changed their plans to only allow specific HDs? i dunno, i don't have a ps3, i would check otherwise...

Sony built the HD around the user you can put any HD into it as long as its the kind of HD is uses which was a slim laptop sata I think.

Serial ATA 2.5. I already upgraded my 20 gig HDD to 120. It's very easy to do. I think it took about 5 minutes to change--and that included a bathroom break lol.

I still dont get why sony would want to do this. It just seems unnecessary. If theyre having a hard time selling the current ps3 models due to the high price, just imagine how much the 80gig will cost......... :/

yeah it is for now. But sometime down the road they'll come out with a new ps3 version(but hopefully then production costs would go down, thus it wont be too expensive).

Thats good i didnt know that means the PS3 is built for the future and does not need to challenge the 360 with them upgrading to challenge Sony.

Why not make a supplemental external usb ps3 drive that would compliment the one already in the system?

What happens when they see that people are filling up the 80gb?? Make a FOURTH model with 120gb and so on and so forth??? Its ridiculous!!!

@ limelight, are you talking about the 360? because from what everyone has posted, you can easily upgrade your ps3 harddrive

well you can I think but large extra things setting around can be messy, and for the 360 its limited to unlocked files only so thos 6GB movie files you bought can not be moved 0-o

I'm willing to bet this was a rumor cooked up because of the 360 elite. If you read in the PS3 handbook they show you how to change out your HD for a bigger HD upgrade.Right now there is no reason for Sony to do this M$ is playing catchup with Sony in the Hardware department.Like i said on other post this vaildate everything they bashed about the PS3 but then come behind Sony & add these thing...LOL M$ has really be eating there word as of late.

well sony pretty much said they arn't doing anything like this just yet so they aren't too crazy. i wouldn't be too surprised if in the future we see the 80gb ps3 replace both the 20gb/60gb and retail for something around $550. i think that would make the system an even better deal and a little more competitive to the 360 elite. in comparison, for 75 more bucks you really do get a lot more for your dollar when you breakdown the two consoles. maybe they'll release something like this around the xmas season, which would be a nice move. who knows.

The only benefit of this would be that you wouldnt have to go out and buy an extra HDD on top of the already high price of the PS3, thus it would I suppose save you money. But as they've said it aint going to happen we should be seeing it in 1-2 years LOL. I still cant get over the fact that MS crippled the 360 to only be able to use MS HDD's, that in my opinion is probably the stupidest thing they have ever done to the 360. But then Bill Gates needs his money...
