European PS3 launch March 23?

Siggy @ Jan 15, 2007 09:28 | 41 comments

TBWA, an advertising agency, has told GamesIndustry.biz that the ad campaign for PS3 is running towards the end of March. This reinforces the previous rumors that the console would debut March 23 in Europe. Also a retail source is placing bets on 23, "It's safe to assume that the PS3 launch will be towards the end of the month. My money is on the 23rd."

Last month SCEE boss David Reeves confirmed that the PS3 European launch is on track, despite the rumors claiming otherwise. During the following two weeks Sony is expected to announce the launch date officially, so stay tuned.

BobbyBlu don't be such a jerk.

I can look at the specs and price of the PS3 and conclude that it is seriously over-priced for what it is. Cos it is.
Plainly and obviously.

It's stuck in no-mans land trying to be something more than a games platform but yet it's nothing like as versitile or good as a decent & recent PC.
At that price? No thanks.
Maybe when it's dropped a couple of hundred.

(it even might well be the cheapest and best featured Blu-ray player available but that says more about the absurd pricing of stand-alone players on the Blu-ray side of the fence.
But let's not forget that it's primarily a games machine (so that's most of the serious a/v market turned off right there) & that if people do buy it just for Blu-ray movie playback that hurts Sony very badly too)

......and from the distinct lack of sales (once the initial fanboy rush was over) and the large numbers of them staying resolutely bolted to the store shelves - 1 million units unsold?! - it seems I am far from alone in reaching this conclusion.
(hey, tell us the one about the shipping numbers again!? ha ha ha ha ha ha)

You disagree?
That's your privilege, enjoy your freedom, I'm enjoying mine to think what I think about it and say so too.

But neither I nor anyone else needs to be suckered into shelling out cash on one beforehand to see what a grossly over-priced mess the PS3 really is.

Hey Bobby Boo you sound like a sony employee. here in the burbs of Chi town you can find all the Ps3 you can afford. No one is fighting over them I just left bb in Naperville Ill and they had 8 count them 8 for sale and no one was looking for them. I like the Ps3 graphics But 600$+ FOR A GAME SYSTEM with no HD cables, and no extra controller, and no game included is excessive and who cares if there is a BluerayDVD player built in. I could build a very nice PC tower for 600$.

I have 5 friends who can't find a WII,they have looked in more than 10 places locally, don't really want to buy something online,Ebay has them for for 300-500.
its funny they can find a PS3 no trouble they just don't want something that costly and would rather wait and get a WII mostly because of the new controller.

EDIT

I'm not being a jerk your acting like a little kid.You guys act like PS3 been out over a year..Dam people the system only been out 2 months..LMAO.The only reason you can't find Wii systems is because the price point thats all.Did people say this when the 360 launch at this time last year & only sold 600,000 console to this point.NO.

Hughjars

All i did was asked what your info was base off and you still can't tell me can't ya'. I'm sorry if you feel i called you out but how can you be creditable when you don't own a PS3 or even brought one & took it back because you didn't like it.If someone told me that they owned a PS3 & took it back because they feel that the price was not justify i would respect them because they had one.Not just run off at the mouth and don't know what the hell your talking about.

Quote:

- You are.

You're making really dumb claims that only someone who has bought and owned a PS3 can comment on it or even have a view on it.

That's just really silly & laughable.

Quote:
your acting like a little kid.

- No.

Only a child would try and claim people can't possibly assess a situation unless they have actually bought and owned one.

Quote:
The only reason you can't find Wii systems is because the price point thats all.

- Er, isn't this just exactly in line with some of the criticism people have been making about the PS3 being over-priced?

Quote:
Did people say this when the 360 launch at this time last year & only sold 600,000 console to this point.

- Please cut out the fanboy tactic of trying to divert the issue.

The XBox 360 is not the subject of this thread
(and in any event has sold 10.5 million units and rising).

Quote:
All i did was asked what your info was base off and you still can't tell me can't ya'.

- No you didn't.

You've been trying to tell me (and everyone else) that unless we have bought and owned a PS3 we can't possibly know about it.

You might like to consider what the term 'communication' is all about.

I don't need personal experience of it
(and I'm dammed sure I'm not laying out cash at that price for it either).
I can read lots and lots of other people's personal experience and the serious technical analysis.

That'll do for me (and looking at the poor sales figures it looks like it's done for lots of other people as well).

To me i always read launches for the US and Europe. But what about Australia and even New Zealand.

Comment by: ZippyDSM (Jan 19, 2007 01:46)

we doubt BR and PS3 because of the mistakes that they have made,BR future like HDVD's is unknown, however its easy to say once the PS3 has been out 2 or 3 years it will reign much like the PS2,mainly because the WII cant compete directly with it and once the price of the PS3 comes down 200 it will push even more units, the 360 is EU/USA for the most part meaning it can't sale like the PS3 can.

However unlike the PS2 days the Nintendo will gain ALOT of ground on the Sony, and MS is a strong 3rd wheel

I feel once everyone understands what their new "HD-TV's" can do with HDMI-HDCP they will want more. (I'm the old fart DAD of our house and a gadget geek all my life). I'm showing all my friends and co-workers how great our JVC HD TV is and they are starting to buy them. So when they see our PS3 and what it can do they all go nuts and say that will be what they get next. Everyone loves the Blu-ray DVD's. Surf the net play games etc... Its NEXT GEN. So as people upgrade their TV's they will see that a PS3 saves them at least $400.00 over a plain-jane Blu-ray and gives them so much more for the whole family. Kids sell it to your dads like i'm telling you here. As far as HD-DVD's go we have one of them also and Blu-ray looks a little better, besides DVD's with both formats on one DVD are coming out soon. Our HD-DVD is in our new HP computer not hooked up to our TV but hooked up to HP's HP-W22 22" LCD which is great! Also we have a WII and thats very fun but PS3 is where its all going I'M SURE OF IT seeing we have all of them to compare. So if your looking for plain old fun get a WII. If want the future now, get a PS3. Hey if a future update will turn the WII into a DVD player (coming soon) then just think what updates can do for the PS3. Myself I would like to see my home network be able to be seen from our PS3 so we can get music and TV shows taped on other computers in our house to play through our PS3, you know they can do it but will they. Come on you bright young hackers start making some cool mod's for PS3. I'd love to see someone make mod's that will work like an add on so it won't void the warranty. Good luck and have fun. Wish I was young again. You young people, when your our age, this will look like very simple and old fashion times. What a future you all will see!!!!!!

If your not doing anything wrong why would you be worry about this? ? ?

Microsoft: Ps3 cant do 60fps on 1080p. Guess what they were WRONG!!!!!
(11/19/05 - 9/19/06) Microsoft: Sony's 1080p support on PS3 is all Hype and Not Needed.
(9/20/06) Microsoft: Xbox 360 to add 1080p support.

Comment by: blatam (Jan 22, 2007 06:21)

Hey
Ok which is not needed?
I at first bought the new Viewsonic "HD"...
But guess what? Our "HD" movies would not play!
We had to bring it back and get a monitor with HDCP to play them.
Also we have a friend with a 3 year old "HD" TV with no HDCP.
Guess what he can't get anything that needs HDCP to work.
So which is not needed?
I'm sure you were just messing with me but I wanted everything to be clear in case someone showed their Dad what I wrote.
Not everyone knows how all this works including me.
So i've come here for help for a long time and wanted to give back as best I could.
I think I know whats not needed here...

0-o
HDCP is not supposed to be in use yet 0-o
HDMI is not perfected it has its issues and yet they released it anyway.

HDCP will force people to buy new hardware in order to run newer movies in high def....perhaps forcing upgrades out of season is not needed...but you seem to not care about the anti consumer aspect of it,you are just happy to bend over for them anytime they are ready.

well I really don't know what to tell you.
But if you put a "HD" DVD player in your computer and want to play HD DVD's in it,your monitor better have HDCP in it or you WIL NOT SEE ANYTHING as I went through with the Viewsonic HD I bought.
Also in our living room its the same thing. Our Yamaha receiver has HDMI
connections and our HD Cable box when hooked up with HDMI cables would not work hooked up to the receiver then our JVC TV. It took TWO WEEKS to get Time Warner to add me as a beta tester to get the repeater software downloaded to our cable box so we could go through our receiver and then to the TV! That was in April of 2006. So your not up to date on that. HDCP is very much IN USE TODAY!

Not quite when it comes to the PC vister has the ultimate way of handling HDCP Vister has highly encrypted digital data routes that ensure the data is protected a HDMI/HDCP output is not "needed" but will probably be tacted on to it.

Plus there have been rumors that HD DVDs have been made to work on XP possibly skipping HDCP altogether.

Mmmm perhaps they are beta testing HDCP before they make it mandatory for HDVD/BR.
in any case timed demos for the 360/pc,HDCP on previews and current feeds is stupid..I love the anti consumerism of today.

Bend over? Well you sound like me 30 plus years ago, lol.
Hey I love you guys. You get things done, you make changes.
Keep up the good work. I'm just at the age I want what I want when I want it and if I have to "BEND OVER" so be it. I LOVE THIS digital age.
I watch the Discovery channel in HD or watch a John Fogerty concert in HD on another channel I could cry. I’m so amazed at what is here in my lifetime. I watched TV in black and white on a 19” TV while growing up and loved it. I was in High School before we got color and almost in College before cable, lol. Like I said before you young people are going to see such GREAT THINGS! I can’t fight anymore you guys do it for all of us, ok. Hey Mom and Dad didn’t want me to smoke but it felt great when I snuck a smoke. So you don’t want me to “bend over” but it feels so great when I do and get to see “HD”…

If HDCP is handled a little less heavy handed it would be a good tool for the media mafia to try(and fail) to protect their data however it and DRM are going OTT they don't let you return bad media when its content blows and will not let you back it up ,and make the menus in DVDs hard to use when you are 80+ not to mention the forced adds and crap they have lost sight, and I will hold their feet to the fire because they fail to improve fast enough.

the way things are its unbalanced and leaning agisnt the consumer add to it shallow and poorly created media its just annoying and sicking.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm I do fight a little.
I write some good letters to those AS%&OLES.
Giving an older persons view on how unfair they are.
I hate that we can't use our slingbox on our little girls PSP!
Also I must say that while Napster was around and free before it was shut down. Our home bought more CD's than we did before. It was fun to use Napster to hear songs we liked then buy the real CD. Now i'm back to not buying any. So they lost with people like us!
Oh and yes our little girl is really little 10 years old, my 3rd family, lol.
Third times a charm, something like that, lol.

to me its simple you want to run previews fine run them frist then the movie the menus can be gotten to at any time theres no need to have them FIRST,the pointless warneign can be LAST and to force any of this and not be able to go to the menu at any time you want by pressing a button is fkced up sad and retatred even china cant make a simple to moive DVD player because they are now almost wholey owned by the man.

not to mention the digital sat channel to analog cable device so you can pipe the channels you pay for into all your cable TVs that should have been made yet never was...this double diping over charging BS has to stop.

Well maybe when younger people get in office it will, years from now.
We need young smart people to start getting interested in running for office. People that know we are being screwed. The people there now don't even know how to use anything. HD...Slingbox...PSP...PS3...Home Networking...homebrew...they don't even know what were talking about and want change. Get out and vote and find good strong people to run that know how the world is really working now! I've loved all this stuff for ever...just didn't really learn how it all worked but i've kept up more than most, lol.

Our PS3 just died. I'm sure your glad to hear it, lol.
We have to send it back and they will send us a new one.
The problem is we have a Blu-ray movie in it and not the one that came with the PS3! Anyone know how to get it out? They didn't put a paper clip hole like on computers to force it out, aghhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
