Nintendo profiting, Microsoft decreasing loss

Siggy @ Oct 27, 2006 20:13

Even though Wii launch is still ahead, Nintendo has reported a 54.4 billion yen (approx. $459.5 million) profit in the first half of the fiscal year that ended in Semptember, which is a 48 percent increase from the previous year. The Japanese company's sales rose up to 298.82 billion yen (approx. $2.52 billion), which leaped up a whopping 69 percent compared to 2005.

When you look at the sales figures, it should be obvious why Nintendo's success is continuing and growing. Nintendo DS alone has sold more than 10 million units this year, which took a huge boost after the launch of the slimmer DS Lite in spring 2006, making it a total of 26.82 million DS and DS Lites sold. And there are Nintendo's software, the combined sales of New Super Mario Bros. and Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day rose up to over 11 million games.

Meanwhile, Microsoft reported a 70 percent increase in Entertainment and Devices Division revenue, from $606 million to $1.03 billion. But even though the division revenue boosted from the Q1 2005 (when Xbox 360 wasn't on the market), it reported a $96 million loss. The July-September quarter, which is the first in their fiscal year, in 2005 was even worse with $173 million lost.

Microsoft announced that the "demand for Xbox 360 consoles, software, peripherals, and Xbox Live" raised the Entertainment and Devices Division revenue. Microsoft has sold more than 6 million Xbox 360 console worldwide and more than 4 million users have now registered on Xbox Live.
