Nintendo didn't want Project Natal?

DVDBack23 @ Jan 28, 2010 02:57 | 10 comments

According to CVG, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata was given the opportunity to sign up as part of the device that we now know as Project Natal, but declined because he felt they could not launch it at mass-market price.

The technology was demoed by Israel-based 3DV Systems in 2007, but Iwata and other executives declined to accept it as a Wii peripheral.

"Iwata-san only ever invests in something he can guarantee will work for a Nintendo audience," says an unnamed "top" executive, via CVG. "3DV showed off a camera that detected motion in 3D, and had voice recognition - but Iwata-San was unconvinced he could sell it at a Nintendo price point. He also had some worries around latency during gameplay."

Despite agreeing that Microsoft has improved on some aspects of the technology since it purchased 3DV last year, the exec adds: "What we witnessed at E3 was smaller and the facial [reading] stuff had improved, but it's the same technology. We remain unconvinced Natal will deliver on the more sophisticated elements of what Microsoft is promising at the price they're aiming for."

The latency must be terrible for Nintendo (the creator of the WiiMote) to think latency is a problem!

Of course he's not gonna praise the competition, he wants them to go down. Natal will probably be better than the Wii imo.

I dunno WII motion plus is precise enough but its still a unfinished consenpt IMO. If natal is as precise as the WII was or better than ya it will be a neat lil gadget...but still..... I'll take persion over anything...

Precise? Maybe...but when it comes to response time, the only thing worse than the WiiMote Plus is the orriginal WiiMote.

IE: underpowered, overpriced crap. Why does this sound so much like Steve Jobs...

100% agree with you. The response time is ridiculously slow. The only FPS I could play on the Wii without feeling like I was severely handicapped was Metroid Prime.

I don't think it's the fact that he doesn't want to help the competition but if he doesn't see it fit to make money off of why would he buy into it. I don't think the Wii has as much potential to use Natal to it fullest.

The idea of Wii came from the PS2's eye toy.

The wii came straight from the xaix (i think that's how it's spelled, pronounced za-vix). My wifes dad is a manager at radio shack and we had one years before the wii - all motion censored games.

I thought the idea for the Wii came when a Japanese executive looked down while urinating and thought, "I need to make a crummy system and name it after urine".
