Sony previews PS3 firmware 3.1

DVDBack23 @ Nov 17, 2009 17:04 | 26 comments

After having some of the upcoming PS3 firmware 3.1 features leaked last week, Sony has officially previewed the new update via the PS Blog.

Says the post:

Hi everyone, here’s an early peek at PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.10). The latest update incorporates Facebook into the PS3 experience. By linking your PlayStation Network account to your Facebook account, you will have the option for the PS3 to automatically update your Facebook News Feed with Trophy and PlayStation Store activity. This update also enables developers to set specific criteria in their titles to publish additional game information to your News Feed. You can then check out your updates, and those of your friends, on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media favorites through the PS3’s built-in web browser.

This is just the beginning of our integration with Facebook and we are looking forward to adding new features enhancing the experience in future updates.

Additional highlights from update 3.10 include:

* The Photo category on the XMB has been revamped to make it easier to see more of your photos stored on the PS3.

* The PSN Friends List has been modified based on feedback we received after update 3.00. Additionally, you can now choose a color for your PSN ID on the XMB.

you're assuming that he owns a PS3 , don't you recognise a pre-teen x-box fanboy attack when you see one ? :)

Another new person that can't read the rules. People like you are the reasons threads like this get closed.

How about the problem with people having there PS3's bricked after an update. Happens to a few every time. I always wait a while before I update because I'm scared to update.

What makes you think they aren't concerned, and don't work on trying to prevent it from happening?

I don't fear an update at all for mine. Usually, there's almost always more to the story. I, for one, haven't ragged mine out. It would be nice to hear what the commonalities (abuse, etc.) among those who have gotten "bricked." These are very unusual circumstances that do not affect the vast majority of users.

I was actually trying to get him to say that he owned one. I suspected otherwise, but wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt without making accusations. And if he does own one, then he should have a list of things that he wants to see fixed. I agree with the uncertainty that looms with every firmware update. But I haven't had any problems yet. I have a lot of things I would like to see updated or added, but they are not all functional. Overall, I'm happy with the system.

I know the story of two consoles. My own and a (sort of) friend of mine. I had the 60gig (got a new one) and he had the 20gig (he moved on to the 360). He got his about a month before I did. Neither one of us used it for anything more than what it was intended. No Linux or anything like that. His stopped working after 2.52fw and mine stopped after 3.0fw. The only thing common about the two consoles are the games we played and both stopped working with a blinking yellow light immediately after the update. Good to hear your one of the lucky one's that have had no issues with the PS3 but not all of us are as lucky.

Still waiting on LastFM support.

And bring back Hulu!

I'm still waiting for MKV playback puleeese!

PS
I've always updated firmware within a day or two of it becoming available and never had a problem (probly jinxed it now though)

Thirded. That's about the only functional change that I want. Everything else is aesthetic. Full native mkv playback. No converting or remuxing bs.

just a little error. Firmware version 3.1 is already out. 3.10 is the one there showing. oh and for the people that want hulu, dont be asking sony. Its the actual website that stopped PS3 support

Some random analyst said he THINKS it might be subscription only in the future. But yeah, Hulu is up to Hulu to decide to allow PS3 to access it again, not Sony.

Not an error...3.01 is already out, 3.1 & 3.10 mean the same thing.

It happens. The only time I haven't forgiven it is when Atari had TOS 1.06 for the initial STe computers and then released an update to it that was 1.62. Apparently, there was only enough space for 2 digits after the decimal point, so they couldn't do 1.062 and made the excuse that the '0' should be ignored...but many thought it shoulda been 1.07 or 1.08 instead. Such geekiness! ;-)

Comment by: BobH29 (Nov 18, 2009 13:07)

The thing I want to see the most is already in the pipeline, and that's HD movie rental via the UK Store. But native MKV support would be nice although i don't use that format a lot.

As for Bookface and Twatter, good for those that use them but not of interest to me.

Please indulge us with the rest of the story.

Did you both contact Sony, and return the units to them so they could attempt to diagnose and repair the problem?

If not, then you are actually more guilty than they are as far as helping resolve the issue long term. If they can't "see" the issue first hand, there's absolutely no way they can prevent it from happening in the future. If you didn't return it for inspection, then you are preventing them from having information they need to resolve such issues.

I do QA for a living. If they can't create or recreate an issue, they can't possibly fix it or prevent it ahead of time.

Sony can't fix a error "made up" by a some random guy on afterdawn to passively bash the PS3.

Comment by: oneguy (Nov 19, 2009 09:25)

When will we be able to change the text color so when I have a light colored wallpaper I wont have to squint or walk up to the screen to read the words? And I haven't tried it yet but does this update fix the auto play to auto play a dvd or blu ray like it use to?

I don't believe the issue is "made up", it's just that those who do have a problem should be more collaborative in helping Sony solve their specific problem.

That being said, there are a lot of folks who like to take isolated problems and blow them out of proportion, making them sound like an epidemic. Afterdawn itself is sometimes guilty of this (the digital switchover was a good example.)

I suppose if the reality or truth is boring, some feel a little drama is necessary to "spice it up."

To begin with, why not to update the out-of-dated Web Browser and incorporate a regular updates from Adobe, Microsoft plug-ins (Silverlight), make the PS3 more interactive, like adding compatibilties features with other SONY products, give more compatible video codecs, make a 100% PC compatible streamig software program.

Facebook is just lame, another crap to link information, what next?. you're dumping a stinking crap in the toilet and someone from Facebook got to tell you
"man, your crap stunk bad!"....
