Wal-mart begins selling used videogames

DVDBack23 @ Oct 12, 2009 04:31 | 18 comments

Wal-Mart has begun selling used videogames via their online storefront this week, offering the games for up to 30 percent off MSRP while giving a "guarantee" on quality.

Buyers have up to three weeks to return defective titles and the giant retailer is offering games from the Nintendo Wii, DS/DSi, Sony Playstation 2 and 3 and the Xbox 360.

It appears Wal-Mart finally sees the great margins of used games, which have helped outlets such as GameStop to remain profitable during hard economic times. During a recent quarterly earnings statement, the video game chain said used games revenue jumped 22 percent year-on-year and margins on used games were over 45 percent while new games sales fell.

"Begins"? Do you know how many times I've bought a game from WalMart, only to find out it had been returned after suffering major abuse?

Or do you mean that they're giving a discount for that now?

Where is this happening at ? I have never heard of any kind of gaming system game being put back out to be sold.

I believe he is talking about the games themselves, which some companies, including walmart, will resell even after being opened and scratched. Some stores even resell cracked disks, though I assume this is carelessness and not policy.

"while giving a "guarantee" on quality."
-I wonder if this means that they guarantee the quality of the games, or if it is just a no scratch/crack guarantee. They would have a lot of troubles guaranteeing quality games when most games suck.

I think one can more than safely assume they are referring to the guarantee of the physical quality of the disc-playback without problems related to the disc, and not the disc content. There is not one in the world that would say "we'll sell you games, movies, music..., and if you don't enjoy them, you can bring them back"...

No, I didn't go to the link. I could have sworn that DS/DSi was not in the article when I read it earlier. Maybe because the other stuff is underlined in blue my eyes skipped over it? lol I may be hallucinating.

DS was not in the original article. Xbox, GameCube, Gameboy Advance, and PSP are not there now. But Walmart is selling them all.

If im going to buy a used game i'd still rather support a smaller place like micro play that dosn't ID me every time i buy a game.

Not to be rude, but that sounds like it's on you not Walmart. If I am paying full retail for a game it better still have the factory seal intact. If not, I would demand an unopened copy or simply buy the game somewhere else. Walmart has the right to sell products that have been returned but you also have the right to demand new, unopened retail products.

I don't think that the game in question suffered abuse by a consumer. As far as I know once you open the game it's yours. They will exchange for the same game but the game is usually checked first by CS and some one in the Electronics dept. I'm not saying your wrong, but maybe that was just a chance thing.

So you have a problem with Wal Mart because they do their job???
If you look under 25 your usually going to get carded. My suggestion...grow a bread. Don't get me wrong I don't like Wal Mart either. but flaming them for doing their job just doesn't seem right to me.

I'm saying that when I go to a smaller place there are normally 1 or 2 employees and they know me so they don't bother to ID me at walmart it's always some other person and I have no photo ID what so ever so it's a huge hassle. So my problem with walmart is actually that they are a huge jerky corporation.

I agree also. My local Gamestop rocks. No need to buy used games from Walmart.

Well I just picked up my order that I placed and I'll just say the disc it self was, well it looked brand new to me. Same way with the case and the instruction booklet. All great condition.
