Maybe they will start selling the elite for a price that is closer to the current Pro model. They need to do something if they are going to have all those downloadable games on xboxlive very soon. Assasin Creed, Bioshock, those games are going to use up a good bit of HD and with my HD, maybe 3 to 4 games and i am full. I got 20gig and it is far short from what i need. Give me more data space! LOL

Or you could simply just order in a 2.5" S-Ata drive, format it properly, open up your 360 hard drive HDD enclosure or buy one online to stick your new 2.5" drive in and there you are set. Not only do you save hundreds of dollars on purchasing a 360 drive, you can get a much bigger drive than what 360 currently offers. Especially since soon 1TB drives are coming.

Not that I recommend anyone to actually do this, it is a suggestion if you are brave enough to do this. Buying a separate enclosure insures you are doing no damage to your 360 taking apart the screws, so you should not void your warranty, and since you are still purchasing these games from xbox live, they are legit MS copies.

At this stage in the game, you'd think they'd drop these confusing multiple sku's. Buying a damned video game console shouldn't be like buying a car. Hmm, do I want the DX, LX, or EX? Well I've never had a honda and couldn't tell you which is which, but I know one of those is the bare bones model, one is the topped out model, and one is in between.

dont pay attention to what mysttic is saying. the largest drive you can put in the 360 is a 120 gigs. sure you can put a TB drive in, but it will only see 120 gigs, and you HAVE to use a specific drive. that largest drive that will actually work with the 360 after hacking/formatting it with a proper MS 120 gig serial number, firmware, and everything else is a 250 gig western digital BEVS series laptop drive.

mate the 360 hdd is a separate peripheral from the console. if u want to u can remove it and take it to a friends house. if u want to mess about inside the hdd case by all means go ahead but dont go crying to the forums as its ur own fault and unless sumbody has found a way to do this then u can ask them. the 360 hdd is designed to be able to be removed and replaced with another 360 hdd. screwing about inside the hdd case will not void the warrantry of ur console but it will void the warranty of ur hdd so if it breaks u will need to buy another one and you will most likely lose all ur saved games nd content if u open up ur hdd so its best just to buy a new official hdd from the store or the net. there are no screws needed to be removed to replace the hdd so if you undo any and acidentally open your case then u will have voided ur warranty so i wud avoid touching screws like the plague.

sorry if i seem hostile of impolite but i just want to state the facts and risks of screwing about inside the hdd case.

my man here explained this better than i did. i took a while typin the message... lol. and it is probably cheaper buyin an official xbox 360 hdd nyways instead of muckin bout tryin to put new hdds into old cases thn rnt meant to be open.

actually its a lot cheaper to get the BEVS drive and flash it. they can be obtained for around 50 bucks, and all the software and everything you need is online for free. also, you can get a HD case on ebay for around 10 bucks, so even if you wanted to keep your original 'original' you can. and you can also get the data transfer kits free from MS.

Like I said in my first post, it was a suggestion, as for the how; that I do not post. It is not my obligation to teach, as it usually attracts unwanted attention, as you all can clearly see by the high amount of news regarding illegal acts of piracy, reverse engineering and so forth.

So before everyone has jumped to the gun and criticize whether or not it can be done to use your own SATA drive for the 360; yes it can, and one only needs to google the answer. There are people out there that tell you which drives are proven legit for the 360 to recognize and even more rare some sites sell these drives or direct you where to buy them. As for the drives only allowing up to 120GB of space currently because that is what the Elite has; again, it can be searched on the net, there have been successful attempts at working a 250GB.

For the record I don't take offense to anyone's claims, as I stated before "for those brave enough to try" I did not anywhere in my first post guarantee that any individual who tries it will succeed. It helps to be tech savvy and know what you doing. It's actually very easy to take apart the 360 enclosure to stick your own drive in, it's a bit annoying to force the 360 to recognize all its space. But it IS possible. Going back to undoing the enclosure, although its easy and safe to do so long as you are gentle handling your hardware; it's also why I stated to purchase an enclosure. Again googling *purchase 360 enclosure* will provide where to get em, they also come with a nice pretty picture instruction sleeve to tell you how to undo it.

Now no one has to take my word for it, I was only offering it as a suggestion, but before people get angry or consider themselves offensive *which so far no-one has been in my mind*, please don't just jump the conclusion that just because all the sites you found said it doesn't work, doesn't mean that it can't. *Same can be said for this article: just cause the arcade box doesn't have the PRO on it, doesn't mean 360 is pulling it. Until confirmed it's all speculation and never say never and never say can't.* It just simply means for those that found the answer, they haven't made it widely public access even in the private scene sector, in order to avoid unwanted eyes. Either way, again it was a suggestion for those that have the mind to do so, why not get the most out of your console?

Drop the old 60gb Pro model and slide the 120gb Elite in to take its place (possibly not only matching the old 60gb Pro price but also with a small drop there too).

There is supposed to be a further hardware revision coming towards the end of this year. The Valhalla SoC (combo CPU & GPU).

The HDD situation will be changing soon too.
It seems accepted that a new HDD of at least 320gb is on the way.

That should mean the firmware limitation, which currently places a 120gb ceiling on HDD space, will rise too (to whatever the new largest HDD size is, presumably).

BTW
wabashman was 100% correct.

Even if you did try to fit a 2.5" drive bigger than 120gb right now that worked, Xbox can only 'see' 120gb (thanks to that bit of limiting firmware in the Xbox, not the HDD).

If you want to fit yur own 120gb drive you can - but you need the specific Western Digital 2.5" drive that Microsoft use (WDGWD1200BEVS).
But it is true that you can buy this HDD much cheaper than the official Xbox kit and fit it to an old/empty Xbox HDD enclosure yourself.

(but whilst that seems ok now you do run the risk that at some later date Microsoft *might* be able to detect this and ban an Xbox equipped with an 'unofficial' drive that size from XBL, if that matters to you)

Hopefully Microsoft will think genuinely big with the new HDD, I'd like to see at least 400gb or 500gb (maybe maybe the rumours will prove true for once and we'll get a 1tb device.....afterall it sits right on the top of the main Xbox unit in its own enclosure and with luck keeping the noise down & cooling it should be fairly easy there.

But, maybe there is another possibility.

Maybe we get Arcade, new Pro (old Elite) and a 3rd SKU later?
The Xbox+ Natal with the biggest HDD fitted?

There is also nothing to stop you using an ordinary external hard drive (and if you format it to hfs+ you even do away with the 4gb file size limit) on your Xbox now.
You can't run games from it but it will happily run all you music, pics and movies leaving the Xbox drive for all the game stuff.

Microsoft will probably do something like that to stay competitive and keep an edge on the PS3 b/c the slim ps3 is suppose to have a 120gig HD right?

I heard the ps3 slim was going to have a 160gb hdd. Microsoft will probably release a 250gb hard drive for games on demand, and drop the elite price to $299, and the arcade below $150 (hopefully).

as far as the 250gig and the 360, the thing you probably read was that you can use a 250 external with it just for movies, pics, and photos. i have tried 500's and a 1tb, and the 360 wont even pick them up. but its true as far as the actual hard drive for game backups, game saves and what not, if you found the right hd that was more than 120, the 360 would still only read 120.

you can find modded enclosures already done for less price than to buy the case + the hd, and then do it yourself on ebay

please do not comment if you do not know what you are talking about. what chris was referring to was the 250 gig HD that is going to be bundled with Forza 3 in the UK, and COD modern warfare 2 bundle for the states. not an external drive. and you must not know what your doing with your external as i have a 640 gig western digital plugged in the back of my console currently and it has no problems seeing it at all.
