PSP Go owners can download digital copies of games they own on UMDDVDBack23 @ Jun 05, 2009 04:41 | 28 comments
John Koller, PSP hardware marketing director says Sony will create a "good will program" that he compared to "digital copies" that come with Blu-ray titles. The digital titles are free and allow users to playback the movie on portable devices or their computers.
"We'll be unveiling that [program] soon [because] we actually think there's a significant group that will be upgrading from the 1000," Koller added. "In the past, we've seen a 20-25% trade-up factor, and I assume that's going to be the case here. We've modeled that."
There still may be a chance however that users will have to pay a small charge to receive the digital copy, as well as send in proof of ownership via a UPC cut out.

And also every new game will be available for download AND on UMD for the older models. And of course not, you don't have to download the game every time you wan't to play, you download once and install once. |

Comment by: vyze (Jun 05, 2009 13:34) okay, now people need to stop complaining about transitioning from the PSP-1000 (which I have) and the PSP-2000 to the PSP Go!

Comment by: funkball (Jun 05, 2009 13:45) I just wish they'd allow me to download my umd based games (and movies) and play them on my PSP 3000 just for the ease of switching games, carrying around less junk and better battery life.

Comment by: inagasake (Jun 06, 2009 02:57) They're still selling UMDs for PSP 1000/2000/3000 users so people without broadband wireless access are not screwed yet. Once they phase out UMD games entirely, then there's going to be a problem. I don't like the direction of this industry. It kills the resale market. You buy used games? Too bad. You can't now. You gotta buy the digital download for full price. You want to sell your games? Too bad. You can't resell your digital download. The DRM will also inevitably lead to issues for some people in the future. |

Comment by: L-Burna (Jun 07, 2009 07:10) I don't like this new design at all they didn't improve it at all, but stripped it like they normally do with their consoles.Look its fairly simple just add the L2 and R2 buttons and the second analog stick. We all know storage is always an issue so if UMD doesn't work then why not use a small harddrive similar to what the iPod and Zune use. They are already up to 120Gig and this guy is talking about 16Gig which is garbage if you ask me.

They're making their consoles more like everything systems rather then just gaming consoles. What their trying to put out there is that you can use the PSP or PS3 for anything. Games, movies, music, a computer, a way to connect with others, whatever. They're making the brand more general, more for everyone. They'll reach out to more people and sell more consoles that way. Obviously real gamers don't care about this stuff, but what about the people that do? |

Comment by: jpc1284 (Jun 08, 2009 15:44) Neo, I hope you are foreign because it is very hard to read anything you type in English. Not trying to be a jerk but if English is your primary language you need to get that fixed. Second I wish everyone would quit kidding themselves. You know the second it is possible to get homebrew running on this thing you are going to get it. It is also ridiculous that people are complaining about not being able to use their UMD games in a news thread about Sony's announcement of a UMD trade in program. Trust me, 16gb flash is a lot of space. I have a 4gb stick in my slim and I can hold 4000 NES games, 10 GBA games and about 4-7 actual PSP games. Yeah, some games are much bigger than others but for the most part games are anywhere from 200mb to 1.5gb with an average of around 500-700mb. As for the new memory stick they are actually cheaper then the memory stick pro duo. And for the people who are too stupid and think that Sony is screwing them with this, THERE WILL BE AN ADAPTER. Maybe not for pro duo to the new M2 format but definitely from M2 to pro duo. People, the sky cant fall so quit saying it is. |
