why are these console makers, making a large HD, a huge buy time decision, when the actual price between a 60gig and 120gig or larger is only a few dollars, what a feckin rip off, or am i missing the point?

xbox360 has supports HDD sizes up too 2TB, however xbox live will ban you if they see anything over 160GB.

Xbox360 hdd uses the same locking mechanism as the xbox hdd,

but to answer your question yes, you could use any hdd on any of xbox models. you could use pro hdd in the core system.

Thx God PS3 don't have this issue Sony let people upgrade to a bigger HD of there choice.

but they do still charge extortionate prices for a larger hard drive when the cost a dollar or two between models the same as what m$ could do here but lets hope there is a price drop and larger hard drive.

No. Nor will They, Xbox HDD is Formated In FATX its Fat32 with Extra Security Information, including the lockout code.

thats not the problem. people know how to get around the lock code,
the problem is the trigger in the dashboard itself.

by putting a HardDiskDrive bigger than 160GB, You break the license agreement. witch states something about reverse engineering software used on the system. They way it stands. FATX is Xbox Main Partition Format.

Why 160GB, is what i want to know, My guess is they will release a 160GB attachment.

That to ME if worth a hundred bucks. Sony gives you the option to upgrade, they are not trying to fool anybody. instead of saying they are ripping you off look at it ALL. forget production price, lets look at retail price. You ARE getting your money's worth.

I slowly see Microsoft losing the war to attract more gamers and warrant current owners to upgrade. Microsoft is starting to make Sony like mistakes, the price point they keep puting the 360 at and not giving us MORE for what we pay is disastrous. Compared to all the things you get with a 40GB PS3 such as Blu-ray, 40GB hard drive and wi-fi, Microsoft needs to do much more than release another SKU with a semi-larger hard drive. They need to up the hard drive space AND price cut it by at least $50 accross the board for all SKU's or be left in Sony's dust as they dominate this generation as they did last! I now see Sony constantly offering more and lowering the price, Microsoft needs to follow suit!

I still see sony offering more and more HW, but given the game library they have will not see me paying the price they're asking for, even more if you consider that almost all games that i may find interesting are as well available for xbox

you see if HD-DVD was the victor the PS3 would be in the same bind as xbox.

Look, ill be the first to admit that the Xbox is guna need alot of support. if they keep going the way there going yes they will lose a good share of Profit.

Why is profit red, because its the only thing multi billion dollar company care about. they don't care about you, or why You think there console is better. They want your money thats it.

i remember when gaming was an ideal, not a debate. game developers would share there ideas, now its against company policy to be talking to other game company's. its a new holly-wood.

The PS3 is a costly console to make so don't diss them to harshly they have at least dropped the price sure BWC has been abandon for now but all in all the PS3 is shaping up nicely they could do better but so can Nin and MS.

MS has 2 choices status quo until new console comes out, make the 360 a real HD media center by putting a BR drive in it and unlocking the HDD via a 40$ kit,the new consoles will have this by default and they will not cost more than what they currently are.

I really wish MS would break the chains and make the 360 a great system but I guess its to late.

Be reminded that Microsoft did not make a penny of profit on their entertainment division until a couple of months ago...and the 360 was released in 2005. They will really have to put up a fight if they want to keep that minuscule profit they have just started making on the console.

MS dose not live for profit in tis sub devisions but as a whole, I truly think they will have to add a BR drive to them ontop of that make a uni HDD kit without changing the price of new units, yes they will lose money for a while but its no worse than bringing out a new console to soon.

And devs wont be making BR games at first if they do it would be as a SE version of it after a couple years BR 360 games on the 360 could be the norm but MS is just sinking into the brimy currently they need to make the 360 the PS3s equal and that means BR and uni hdds,as well as better free live service at no more than the cost of a PS3, the up side to all this is perfecting the next console and ensuring it will not only be "media ready" (unlike the 360 was) but built as the backbone of the brand with BWC(even if tis an optional add on I'll buy it but looking at the sad and faded 360 its not worth 200+...).

Oh no, ANOTHER Xbox SKU. Look, I own a 360, and outside of paying for Live and a DVD drive that doesn't want to open/close sometimes, I like it. Honestly though, how about cutting the PRO SKU altogether and dropping the price of the Elite? The Xbox Arcade bundle is a sham too, unless you don't save too much info.

I actually agree with Zippy about the whole drive pricing issue. It's stupid when the competitor lets you drop any drive you wish into its console. Who cares about FATX? Can't the 360 format on the fly, and then force you to reformat for PC use, much like adding a drive to a DirecTV system?

I know the short answer is NO, for fear of people creating software to read FATX, and then onto bigger and better things, like removing DRM from Marketplace purchases. So instead of giving the consumer a choice, they lock us with DRM. Great.

Also, would everyone just give it up with the Blu-Ray for 360 crap already? There's already enough confusion between SKUS and hard feelings of RRoD, HD-DVD, etc. for us to even fathom Blu-Ray movies on the 360, let alone Blu-Ray games, which would finally alienate the rest of the fanbase, much like Sega did hashing out Sega CD, and then dropping support for 32X, and then dropping support of that for Saturn, then... well, you get my point.

I totally agree with this. A blue-ray add-on would only complicated things more for Microsoft. Yeah it would be nice but think about things from the marketing stratedgy view. Seems like the same people are posting this idea but not realising that you dont turn your back on the multimillion fans that have bought your console already at this current point and force them to spend more money to continue to enjoy games on the console. If Microsoft did this what is more likely. That people would fork out the extra money for the BR add on (remember a lot of people still feel burnt with the RROD), or just go and buy a PS3 since it already has a BR drive and you dont have to worry about hardware issue again?

they do its called eXplorer360 and it reads fatx just fine,

but to more speculation, i believe there will be a add your own hardrive attachment and there keeping it under wraps, for now.
i also think it will be for usb, why. i noticed that the rear usb port
has increased bandwidth and slightly higher speeds than the front two.

again im just speculating.

I realize many people are not HAPPY with how Microsoft is price gouging on their upgraded Hard Drives but they also loose money on every modded Xbox. Obviously, is easier to mass produce games on discs then on cartridges. You can look at this scenario as a way for Microsoft to make up for what they loss. Microsoft don't make money when the game is not bought. The same goes for pirated movies or softwares. The ones who gets SLAMMED the most is your typical consumers who just buys the system for pure enjoyment.

I think it all comes down to what you can afford that makes people get creative or look for an alternative solution to satisfy there entertainment needs.Not only that but some are driven to make a statement that they can reverse engineer any gaming system out there. Prove what you will or due to your financial reasons Microsoft will want to make up for what is lost. Many will argue with me & say they don't need anymore money because they're a big coporate. However, for all the games that you're enjoying now you can thank Microsoft for starting the Xbox program. Afterall, I do have Microsoft to thank for the Xbox Live factor. Their online gaming is second to none when compared to PS3 or the WII. Yes. We have to pay to use it but it beats driving to the Arcade & being comfortable at home playing.

I'm sure some wouldn't careless whether Microsoft started the Xbox or not but it is because of them that keeps Sony & Nintendo on their feet. Believe it or not... I like the fact that we do have these 3 giants fighting amongst themselves becaue it keeps the prices for games & hardwares in check. Competition is GOOD for the consumers! All 3 companies have problems with piratecy & they know this was coming. Somewhere along the lines with having the freedom to do with what you will on your gaming systems comes with consquences. If all I have to do is pay for the hardware then is not going to hurt me as bad as buying the games I want to play. To be honest... The games is what makes the consumers loose their money if you didn't or don't know how to mod your system.

For those of you who remember the days of Commodore 64 or Atari the gaming world has come a long long ways. So, if you have to shell a little money for the bigger hard drive be thankful that you can & stop whining about why the gaming giants are charging so much. I say get a beer kick back & enjoy...:)

P.S. Final note... Most average consumer has 1 Xbox 360 or maybe not even that. So, how many 120gb Hard Drives do you actually need?
