Microsoft hints at $199 Xbox 360

Davedough @ Jun 08, 2007 23:31 | 66 comments

Looking at a market analysis and seeing how well rival Nintendo is doing with its $250 Wii, the people over at Microsoft have started to turn around the ideas that they need a $199US console on the market. Thats what product manager David Hufford has hinted at. Hufford stated that he believes the $199 price point is the sweet spot in the console market and even stated that Nintendo's strategy of bundling a game with the console is a fine idea.

Microsoft comments that its fully aware that Sony's PS2 is still selling strong at its $129 price point and was a good deal since mid-2002 when it was reduced to $199 just after 2 years on the market. Sony boasts some 120 million PS2s shipped with a majority of them being sold post-2002.

Microsoft claims that even though they already take a hefty loss per console sold, that its ready to take an even bigger hit to have the opportunity to sell more units. They believe in their product and feel that the sell of games will make up for the loss in the cost of console production. Hufford also was heard at hinting of emulating Nintendo's sales tactic and could possibly include a pack-in game to coincide with the price drop.

I think I'm one of the lucky few million that are happy with the 360.
I tried to kill mine from new with a 24 hour burn in with the fans going full bore with a few games but it wouldn't die.
I decided then that mine was a good 'un and have played it since launch, streamed music/videos from the PC and watched DVD's on it
too.My friends have 360's too and they havn't had problems either.

It's a shame that people who bought faulty 360's were unlucky when they got a faulty replacement.I would of given
up too after that.Microsoft could of doubled their market-share
if they had better quality control but they fu##ed up there.
In terms of it's technical architecture and software support,it's
really good and many developers seem to like it.
It's online system is great and yakking with friends whilst playing
a game is a standard feature that I wouldn't be without.

I hope Microsoft learns from it's mistake with overheating issues.
I remember the first Xbox being reliable so I don't think they tested
the 360 enough this time.Rushed production to get it to market first
has definitely damaged their brand image and I can't imagine the
damage it has caused to it's revenue.
Consumers will be very wise to any future products,be it their next
console or what ever. The wound is deep and will take a long time
to heal but a scar will always remain.

Mmmmm my bet is Xmas a price lowering will come,it might only be 50 but its a start.

diableria
Mmmmm Wii fail? how cute when the competition is a 600$ "interactive" movie player and the heat failing 360 that despite its hardware issues is a simi decent console.

I'll take the WII and Metroid prime 3 over a dead 360 GoW and Haklo 3.

@ ZIppyDSM
All I'll say is that some people do cause their 360's to overheat from ill-placement but there are definitely dodgy 360's out there
that will overheat no matter what you do due to poor build quality.
I presume most of these to be launch consoles but now everyone's got
3 years warranty people can sleep a little easier at night.

How many millions world wide the first 10 months?
now take thos and repair them for 2 years while adding millions more and you have today, its a mess.

And the worst console design yet,or has another one had a fail rate of above 10%?

Microsoft are spending a billion for their mistake. What else can they do?Atleast they are doing something about it now.If this still upsets people then that's fine, jump ship but for me I'd rather Jump in...

MS has started to go out of their way on this, and thats why I like them a bit more than sony who's tryign so hard to udnerstand the consumer and adjust the PS3 to fit what they want it to be and still sale...sony is giving me a headache,MS is improving, the best thing thye could do is offer new 65chiped 360s to past users but I think they can only afford to cycle the older units out over time.

I still like nintendo more.

like sony loseign 2 or 3 billion or tiwce as much on the PS3 they made 10 billion alone from spider man 3 so the losses for sony are merely part of organizing the brand.

pretty much despite the problems most people are happy with the 360,I am not a fan of it or the Xbox but frankly they have made their mark and they both are worth while systems, the PS3 is being slogged down by its price and sonys unwillingness to do something reasonable about it.

Dude, what the hell do any of these have to do with a $199 price point for the xbox 360???? And you must be high to think they would actually release console already modded. The 360 can already stream music and video (albeit limited formats). Why would they sell a console that could rip games to itself. THEY WOULDNT SELL ANY GAMES! Think before you post.... dumbass

Get your sig down to 4 lines before a mod nukes you, and now I respond to all the silly quotes
--------------
Q:ps3 has linux
A:yes dear and not only 1 linux either
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3#Operating_System
http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/8118.cfm
Why linux? its not fat'n'sexy like XP in fact tis sleek and stable and fast and not made by MS,if it was every other hacker on the planet would be screwing it over(because its a MS OS).
---------------
Q:just a comment..if m$ can make a console then so shud linux :p imagine that
A:linux is a open source OS its not a "company" at least not in the normal sense.
-------------------
Q:i wonder tho, why dont they jus mod the consoles (without having anything to do with piracy) con;
A:well sony want to move to streaming gaming for the PS4 or 5,but the main reason company's prevent copying is because to many people would copy them and not buy them.
------------
Q:Dude, what the hell do any of these have to do with a $199 price point for the xbox 360???? con;
A:calmness friend, releasing anger on noobs will gain you anger from mods, and their fire is much much more...uumm.....firey?

I remember the PS2 wasn't all that reliable but it didn't stop it being a success.Software made it what it is,not the hardware.I had friends who bought more than one PS2 because of read errors/laser problems. They grumbled about it,internet forums talked about it but it was just a mere storm in a teacup.
The PS2 became very cheap to buy,it's games library became absolutely
huge and over saturated which drove game prices to new lows which benefited the consumer even more.So why can't the 360 follow this route?A cheaper price,3 year warranty, growing developer support with good games. What's stopping it from taking at least a third of the market? It doesn't have to take near the whole market like Sony did with the PS2.A cheaper price for the 360 will make a difference to the masses, just not to you ZippyDSM.

That is a good point but MS wouldnt do that because they are already loosing money on the console that is why the games started at £50 theyve gone down a bit now but they still wont make them cheaper, i heard that Sony are losing money on the PS3 so at the end of the day we should be grateful that the console isnt £500-£600.
