PlayStation creator steps downDVDBack23 @ Apr 27, 2007 15:09 | 41 comments
Yesterday, in the latest string of developments in an effort to turn the company around it was revealed that PlayStation creator Ken Kutaragi would leave the company by the end of June.
Sony expects to have a large $2 billion USD loss for its video game unit, fueled by slow sales for the PS3 and high operating costs for the console.
Kutaragi wil be replaced by Kazuo Hirai, the president of the worldwide PlayStation unit. Hirai is considered an ally of CEO Howard Stringer, the man who many feel asked for the resignation of Kutaragi.
Stringer and Kutaragi had a few disagreements over the years, and according to the Wall Street Journal, one of those issues was Kutaragi's lack of communication with other Sony officials. The disagreement eventually lead to Kutaragi losing control of daily operations. Further angering officials, Kutaragi went far over budget for PS3 development costs and questioned Sony's manufacturing practices.

I want my FFVII remake! It could be awhile... This is Sony for petes sake, the same people that used to charge $300 for a walkman. |

Comment by: djeazyg (Apr 29, 2007 14:22) Sure he has a point. His point. I was just hoping he would tell me again how he doesn't want a BlueRay player as if that is why they built PS3. The games are coming. Late..... but they are coming.

Comment by: wetsparks (May 05, 2007 14:49) I know that Ken Kutaragi gets a bad rap here on Afterdawn, but I have a subscription to PSM and he would appear for interviews with those guys all the time and is actually a really nice guy. But when you are the face of something like he was with the PS3 you get none of the credit for successes and all the blame whenever something goes wrong. With all the M$ fan boys on here he gets plenty of blame whenever they perceive that something went wrong.

It is considered an insult and they usually quit, which is what Kutaragi has done. But the company doesnt look bad by firing him. The Japanese companies and the people who work for them have this thing called loyalty that people in "the west" have forgotten about, even though America taught them how to do business the "western way" after America bombed them. |

Comment by: wetsparks (May 08, 2007 00:38) The honorary chairman is the key part of your wiki quote. Even though he got "credited" with all the playstation things, he also got blamed for the higher ups deciding to make it $600. As if they thought that putting in a blue ray player to push that would be cheap. I think if they bit the bullet and made it $500 originally and $400 for the stripped down version they would have done better.

Comment by: wetsparks (May 08, 2007 03:30) Except for the Wii, game play is virtually the same no matter the console. As for removal of blue tooth etc, if they did that and incorporated it into the lower priced one and sold it for $350 they would have sold tons of those systems. I could careless about wireless controllers and a headset because most of the people I would probably play against online are teenagers and I sit close enough to the tv that cord length has never been a problem.

After almost a decade of being the top video game maker, Sony now finds itself in third behind Nintendo and Microsoft and a turn around is obviously necessary.
