Sony hands out HDTV sets at London PS3 launch

Dela @ Mar 23, 2007 02:54 | 12 comments

Sony has given a great surprise to those waiting to buy a PlayStation 3 (PS3) console in London; a 46" LCD HDTV television set and a free ride home. The giveaway involved more than 100 gamers and cost about £250,000. "I feel fantastic. I'm delighted that everyone here also gets a television." 17-year-old Ritatsu Thomas, the customer at the head of the queue, said.

The PS3 costs £425 in the UK and its game line-up is starting to improve. It includes a Blu-ray drive for games and for movies and a powerful Cell processor. The launch in the UK and the rest of Europe was delayed by four months due to production problems. Australian gamers are also able to get their hands on a PS3 now.

Ray Maguire, head of Sony Computer Entertainment in the UK, said that the TV giveaway at the London event was a reward for the patience of the gamers. Say what you want about the £425 price tag for the PS3, but if you are one of the lucky people who also got a free LCD TV, then you got a bargain!

DELA

I'm curious do you know what brand of LCD they got?

This is good work from Sony those people had to wait a while i know it was killing them but for the one's who say Sony ignore there fan base they couldn't be anymore wrong this is just a testament to that giving away 46in LCD HD sets.

Sony Bravia I think?

Could have been fair to everyone out there. instead of shelling out a couple TV, why couldn't they lower the price just a little on each system. Oh thats right Sony wouldn't get publicity that way!

The thing is the customers in the queue didn't know they would be getting the free HDTV until a few minutes before the PS3 went on sale, so those who were there waiting for the launch were lucky.

I dont see nothing wrong with that. Sony makes their own TV's so why not. I know those of you who may not care for Sony will find what ever wrong in this is but hey at least they cared enough to give something to their customers. M$ hasn't gave nothing to people at all oh wait they are letting people download free HD versions of a south park ep from 2004. I guess that makes things better (pardon the sarcasm).

wow you can tell theres a bunch of sony lovers here. But please remember that the TVs that were handed out were in fact SONY made TVs. How much do you think it really cost sony to give away the TVs? True the line was allready there and the sale was basically allready made, but, I would put money down betting that the people spent the money they would have spent on the ps3 on games instead!

Don't get me wrong, what sony did was very nice. But it really didn't cost sony that much money. It was more of more of a media stunt.
(Just my thoughts)
