Euro PS3s rely on software for backwards compatibilityDela @ Feb 23, 2007 18:38 | 28 comments
The company is instead, "increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, truly taking advantage of this exciting technology." Therefore, like Microsoft's Xbox 360, these systems will get their support for old games from software that definitely wont be as reliable as the hardware solution.
"Certain PlayStation 2 format software titles may not perform properly on this system," a Sony statement reads. There is also currently no list of supported or unsupported games. The hardware was cut from the PS3 units to reduce production costs.

Comment by: lxhotboy (Feb 23, 2007 23:27) Oh man, sony fanboy here and xbot there. Let the truth be told, none of these systems have shown be Jack yet. 360 probably has the best selection of games right now but then again they are on the second generation of games compared to the first gen for Wii and PS3. Where is resident evil, Devil may cry, Halo 3. All they are doing right now is teasing. |
Comment by: Rikoshay (Feb 23, 2007 23:34) So what this is saying to European countries is, "Sorry, but we dropped some stuff out of your release because we were too lazy to put it in your versions. That's why it took us so long to bring it out; so we could make your experience more miserable than the last time. Thanks for making our games though!" |

Comment by: Chronic00 (Feb 24, 2007 04:02) you gotta be sh@#@ing me!?! Did they not rant and rave about their enormous back catalog of games etc and the benefit of such along with the "perfect" compatibility at E3 05 as a huge advantage over the 360!?! They run their mouths and force M$ to deliver, which they are, they retreat as always. I've long been a sony fan but not for too much longer. At least I got my ps3 with the old chips included but I've far been enjoying my 360 as of late. Sony blows! They better start impressing with their next gen real soon or dreamcast it is. |
Comment by: marsey99 (Feb 24, 2007 04:38) they have done this to cut the cost but dont seem to realise that it will also cut sales.

Comment by: jonny-x (Feb 24, 2007 06:37) It was a pretty difficult descision as to whether buy a 360 or wait for PS3. Sure I was annoyed, but I have a PS2, so if I got the PS3, I could play all my PS2 games, instead of having a PS2 AND a 360.

Comment by: unicronic (Feb 24, 2007 07:53) Now I have been glad with my choices with Sony in the past, but I get the feeling that Sony are the ones in for a fight this time. PS3 already has made me look to the competition for reassurance and I really don't want to do that. First it is overpriced, and is entering the market with two competitors already established which is a marketing mistake. Sonys PR department can release all the price justifications it wants but thats a fact. In UK the PS3 is going to be around $800 whilst in Hong Kong it is $500. The UK and Europe make Sony alot of money each year and their reward is a raw deal AGAIN. The technology looks amazing but the launch games were pretty average or worse except Resistance. A new press release from Sony states that backwards compatibility has been removed from PS3's launching in Europe. Sony cite a need to focus on new generation titles which is total BS, the real reason is likely to be time and money factors.

Comment by: Ace_2 (Feb 24, 2007 12:23) That thing is going to die real soon. I mean, take a look at Wii sales in just over 3 months. That thing sold 5 million consoles in that time, and the PlayStation 3 hasn't even sold 2 million. How much did the Xbox 360 sell in over 3 months? |
Comment by: BouncyCat (Feb 24, 2007 12:59) I'm sorry, but this does it for me.

Comment by: Rikoshay (Feb 24, 2007 13:17) Well, if it's really that important to buy now, then go ahead, but I know for a fact that I'm not getting near this crap unless it's less than $200 US to buy. There's no reason for me to just get a faster PS2 for anything higher than that. |

Comment by: sellsolid (Feb 24, 2007 15:47) Ridiculous! Backward compatibility is a basic feature, as they are removing the hardware component there is no chance that a future firmware release would enable backward compatibility. As a result patient European customers miss out...again!

Comment by: tehjoker (Feb 24, 2007 16:12) Wow Sony, you just reached a new low! Can you guys get any lower than this? I'm starting to dislike Sony more and more everytime things like this happen. Hope we'll get the Wii instead (i want one of these so bad >.<). Well, thank god atleast my psp is the way I want it. |
Comment by: oofRome (Feb 24, 2007 18:27) Quote: this is not necessarily true. A firmware update would just enable software emulation of ps2 titles, so it could be improved.

Comment by: sellsolid (Feb 24, 2007 18:34) Quote: I hope your right oofRome, however the PS3 consoles at the moment rely 100% on the additional hardware to run PS2 games, Sony have made it clear that they intend to concentrate on other features of the PS3 - they have made it clear that they won't "concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility."

Comment by: JonnyCabs (Feb 25, 2007 12:40) As has already been stated, Sony COULD release a software upgrade that would enable at best a LIMITED backward capability.
