PS3 price goes up in Greece

Dela @ Feb 22, 2007 21:35 | 25 comments

Ahead of the European launch of the PlayStation 3 (PS3) console in Europe, Greece has become the latest country to have a "higher than promised" retail price for the console. The 60GB version of the brand new Sony console will be sold for €659 (US$867) after the RRP was raised in the country. Even the Sony Center in Greece lists the 60GB version of the console for €659.

The console was expected to have a blanket price across the European countries of €499 for the 20GB model and €599 for the 60GB model. Both British and Irish gamers are also being charged more for the 60GB model; which goes for £425 (€633 / US$834) in the UK and €629 (US$827) in Ireland. The reason given for the higher price is that the territory is "traditionally more expensive than other territories."

No Sony spokesperson commented yet on the price hike in Greece.

How about the price in Finland? It's even higher: an incredible 680 €!

Sony must be insane.

Comment by: Attin (Feb 23, 2007 08:48)

Yeah, the prices here in Finland suck pretty hard almost (if not over!) 700 euros

PS3 would be cool, but the price is just way too high so im not buying it :|

Comment by: sugarray (Feb 23, 2007 09:13)

im from ireland the price is a major issue as far as im concerned.€630 for the console and then €70 each per games.Ill be sticking to my 360 for a while,at least until some good games come out for ps3 or until the iso loader is released. The only games currently tempting me to ps3 are resistance and virtua tennis 3, and i heard some mixed reviews of both.

......and the spec of the Euro PS3 has been cut
(the PS2 hardware has been removed & they're going to use emulation.....which is funny considering how Sony were slamming the XBox 360 for this not so long ago).

The lowest spec & the highest prices = Europe gets shafted yet again.

Emulation is not a bad thing however if tis like the 360s screw them....

about time that we in the UK voted with our pockets and left their products on the shelf, f--- them, i'm tired of living in an ordinary country where we are expected to pay more than the rest of the world simply because "traditionally that's been the case" why are we all such pussies here in the Uk and let them get away with it ?

to me it makes more since to mark up the US retail price of it by 30-40% and set that price as the world wide mark

Like take the WII for example make it 290 across the board, sell it everywhere for that price.

these pricing schemes they use are very anti consumer.

Comment by: domie (Feb 23, 2007 14:16)

well the difference is that Americans are much more demanding when it comes to quality, that's why service is so good in the USA, if it sucks, they vote with their feet and don't come back or say it out loud to the company's faces whether it be an electronics giant or a local restaurant.Sony knows that so offers cheaper prices.

here in rip-off Britain, we only bitch behind their backs and don't have the balls to say it out loud to their faces, that's why "most" of our restaurants are shite and over-priced and why all major retailers continue to shaft us, until we become more politicised in relation to retail products, they will continue to defecate on us in the price market.

I think they were slamming it because the emulation wasn't 100 percent compatible with all xbox games. The ps3's emulation wasn't capable at launch, which is why they had the emotionengine shipped with it.
If you're correct about the emotion engine not being in there, than I say more power to sony. They solved it a lot faster than I thought it would take. Not to mention it lowers the cost to manufacture.

more like the 360 witch Sony was dissing not to long ago for not supporting their old games.

oofRome
in doing this they become like the 360 with its VERY SPOTTY BWC,at least with the PS2 hardware in place you just have to patch the odd game not ALL OF THEM..... oh and BTW they are not lowering the price or removing the PS2 hardware from the US and japanese models..

Comment by: oofRome (Feb 23, 2007 16:36)

Actually I just read it isn't entirely backwards compatible. Sorry about that, I was mistaken. Apparently it's going to be no better than 360 emulation, for some time.
That sucks for BWC enthuasiasts.

I know thats the problem ><
I just hope they understand that BWC is not a gimmick and quickly advance full emulation I doubt it but one can hope and until they stop ling and widdleing down the PS3 specs I will be all over them and I have been on the model 1 360 being a fickle hodge podge of a system.

Greece is not the only place to jack up the price. Over here, in Canada, the 20 and 60 gig PlayStation 3s sell for................
599.99(20 GB) and 699.99(60 GB) Canadian! It's like that EVERYWHERE. If Sony wants to sell consoles, this is NOT the way to do it.

Comment by: domie (Feb 24, 2007 17:04)

I can't help smile that you complain that it retails for 699 canadian dollars in Canada when the same machine retails for 968 canadian dollars in the UK

You all wanna know why prices are so high in Europe????
Because you peoplw will pay it!
Dont pay, the price comes down--
if you want it that bad that you will let companies shaft myou--dont complain-------------

Comment by: mikebc (Feb 26, 2007 06:23)

edit for the previous msg----
I live in Britain,ok?
Oh, my apologies for the mis-spells!

Comment by: Ace_2 (Feb 26, 2007 09:42)

Well, let me tell you this: I am not willing to dish out $700 or even $968 for a gaming console. Never have been, never will be. The most I'd pay for a console excluding taxes is $450, no more. On top of that, I say the PlayStation 3's game library SUCKS(all I like that's currently released is Need for Speed Carbon and Blazing Angels, and the only upcoming games I like are Gran Turismo 5, Colin McRae DIRT and Sega Rally Revo). See what I mean(at least it's just my opinion. You can criticize it all you want, I still think the game lineup sucks)?
