Nintendo raises sales forecasts

Dela @ Jan 10, 2007 16:04 | 18 comments

Following a very successful launch of the Wii console, Nintendo has raised forecasts for its full-year profits by 20% to ¥120 billion (€774.9 million), for the year ending March 31st 2007. The forecast that 6 million Wii's will have been sold by March has not been changed. Nintendo expects sales of the DS handheld console to rise to 23 million units, roughly a 15% increase.

Software sales targets have also been pushed up to 21 million games for the Wii consoles (previously 17 million) and up to 100 million sold for the DS. Nintendo now expects a total of ¥900 billion (€5.8 billion) in sales this year, compared to a previous forecast of ¥509 billion.

I'm glad nintendo is doing good, I grew up with Nintendo it would be a shame to see them fail as a company.

I couldnt agree more. Without Nintendo there would be NO console market as of today. Funny Nintendo isnt losing sh1t on Wii this is all profit unlike the ps3 which will be tanking for years.

Exactly!! This just proves that graphics and power are not the only thing that sells consoles. A little innovation goes a long way.

@ solarf, and plutonash:

Its nice to see people like you guys recognize nintendo for what they are, and what they do to reinvent video games.

Hope the Wii sells millions more!

I am glad to see that Nintendo is doing extremely well.

They have actually been around sense before the 1900's (Nintendo was founded in 1889, you can read the company history here ) and its awesome to see a company grow and adapt to each new generation so successfully.

I have been a fan of Nintendo since the NES days and have bought almost all of the consoles released by Nintendo because I know how well they are put together and how much fun they can be.

I also own an XBox and a 360 so don't dismiss me as just a Nintendo Fanboy, although I am a huge fan.

@plutonash, please don't take potshots at other consoles. Its hard not to (I have done it myself once or twice) but I would rather not turn every article about a console/company into a Wii/PS3/360 war thread.

Peace

I think the wii appeals to such a broad audience, it's good to see nintendo trying to bring more people into gaming. I just hope it continues to do well and doesn't get old and stale, but it sounds like a lot of developers want to try and create games on it that would't be possible to do on other consoles, which should keep fresh stuff coming for a while.

Well done Nintendo I like this give it too the big guys :) I really want to get one of these cause of the physical nature of the games it has now.

Nintendo is doing well but...it feels a bit hollow...hopefully in the next year or so we will see deeper game/play control.

If Nintendo fails to to do soemthign about the lack f detail and polish in game play and game control....gamedom is the next holloywood only more interactive and more hollow...

I thought the Wii was all about control and gameplay. :P

That aside, I think the biggest driving force behind Wii sales is its relatively low price. We're talking $250 in a day and age when most new consoles are priced up to twice as much or more.

I'd say most people buying these are parents, and they are thinking, "$400 for a 360, $600 for a PS3 or $250 for a Wii...$250, wow, that's cheap. I can get a 'next gen' system for $250? I'll take it and my kids will love it!"

I really think that a lot of people are expecting the Wii to be as capable as the 360 or PS3 in terms of graphics and sound, and this initial success may just be a shortlived peak driven by holiday hype and pricing. Once the people realize their Wii is just a nicer looking gamecube with a fancy controller.

No one expects this of the Wii, Nintendo has announced and always reminds us(the public) that the graphics are inferior to other consoles. They are selling innovation and that is what everyone expects, no one is being duped into believing that the graphics are on par with anything other then being a little better than the GC.

Kudos to Nintendo for a fun, family oriented, and energy driven system.

ZippyG

the WII can hide under deved games by claiming it was not built for the new controllers or hide the fact some games are not polished by the awe or the new controllers, and yes I know I worry to much but this trend of shallow gaming has become a unstoppable posh fab....hopefully ninendo wont join in on it....

IF anything you can be sure that Nintendo won't jump on any fad...

"CD-ROMs? Why would we want to put our games on a CD. The CARTRIDGE is the way of the future."
-N64 Era Mentality

"What's this in-ter-net we keep hearing about? Is that thing still around? Ehh...nobody would want to play games online anyway."
-GameCube Era Mentality

"Fancy graphics, first person shooters, high definition...umm...uh...RETRO time. Let's see if we can milk any more money out of the GC - quick, make a gimmick controller and have the console look like an iMac. Give it a stupid but easy to remember name. Ch-ching! If it bombs we can always fall back to pokemon and release the gameboy in another color! Let's take our customers for a ride - Wiiiiiii!"
-Current Nintendo Mentality

:D

Are all you Zippys related or something?

I get tired of this misconception that the Wii is a glorified gamecube.

As a Wii owner I'm going to say that super high quality graphics may be nice (maybe Nintendo's next nex-gen console will sport some :p) but they aren't the most important part of my gaming experience. You can have a game that looks just like real life but if it's not interesting or fun to play then what's the point? Besides it's not like the Wii has crappy graphics, it just doesn't have the same graphics as the 360 and PS3.

Thanks but when I want my graphics ultra super uber pointless pretty I'll play on my computer. Other than that... Well. Friggin Wii!!!!!!!

Comment by: ZippyG (Jan 12, 2007 18:38)

I totally agree that graphics don't make up for a game that sucks, but if you have a really good game + outstanding graphics and sound, it's that much better than a really good game alone. I myself prefer a fun to play game, rather than one which can only tout its graphics...but both the PS3 and 360 are bound to have their fair share of games which are not only graphically pretty, but very fun to play. I happen to enjoy japanese RPGs like FF and Kingdom Hearts, and I'm looking forward to these being released on the PS3.

TheJoxter

ZippyG is smarter cant you tell 0-o :P

Anyway the WII is a glorified GC come on you cant say tis power is not a slightly updated GC,however its control scheme makes it better than the PS3 and 360 put together.

I am watching the game control/play of the WII,if it fails to bring back quality it will becoem as shallow as the others....

Once Mario Party 8 , Super Mario Galaxy , and Super Smash Bros. Brawl come out. Wii will do better than the 360 and PS3 combined[well ofcourse the 360 is getting Halo 3 and that might change my comment]

Comment by: solarf (Feb 03, 2007 14:08)

thats a lot of Zippyfor oe thread :P

Super smash brothers will be insane to play on the Wii. And as long as they keep making games fun to play they continue doing well. But nicer graphics would be swell.

Comment by: DarkMods (Feb 03, 2007 14:19)

who cares about the graphics
