1 million PS3s shipped across North America

Dela @ Jan 08, 2007 20:21 | 49 comments

Sony Computer Entertainment America has confirmed that in the six weeks following the launch of the PlayStation 3 (PS3) console, over 1 million units were shipped to North America. The company did not give any figures for the number of units actually sold to consumers but did deny claims that there is a surplus of stock available in stores in some areas saying the "PS3 has been selling out at retail outlets across North America".

According to the company, it is this demand that helped the PS3 hit the 1 million milestone in less time than both the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 consoles. "SCEA went to great lengths to help meet demand for PS3, including airlifting systems into North America on a weekly basis to ensure a steady stream of units were available to consumers throughout the holiday season," said SCEA boss Jack Tretton.

"The fact that we were able to reach the one-million mark faster than our top-selling platform, PS2, further validates the strength of the PlayStation brand and our belief that consumers are ready to experience true high-definition gaming." he added. The number of units shipped to Japan is still unknown.

you live in a fantasy world so far up sony's culo you ignore all facts auround you. Do not worry about the 360 kicking Ps3s ass, Wii is doing a good enough job of its own. The Ps3 is not selling as good as the Wii, go to any gamestop and ask what is selling, the Wii is flying of the shelf as well as the 360 while there is no big rush for the Ps3. I am not saying the Ps3 will not be a good system, I actually like the graphics, but sony has dropped the ball on Marketing the Ps3 as well as Overpricing the game system.

Comment by: anubis66 (Jan 12, 2007 22:21)

people really do live for the corperation these days as uhall proves. he shows me just how much sales and marketing matter to him. he shows that because something performs better in the market its better. good reasoning. i like the system because the graphics are nice, sony has more exclusives i like, the sixaxis dominates the 360's whatever its called, linux is great - perfect solve for delaying my home pc, and little things here and there i just enjoy more. personal preference makes the ps3 better to me.

Comment by: UHALL (Jan 12, 2007 22:56)

Everyone has an opinion and not all people agree on what system is best. All I am saying is 3 million Wii to 1 million Ps3 is the begining of a butt kicking by a system half the power and half the price to the almighty SONY. I think that means mainstream consumers are tired of overpriced game systems like the 360 and the Ps3 which is being proven by the support of a game system not a entertainment system. Yeah I know the graphics are so so but who cares.

Comment by: anubis66 (Jan 13, 2007 04:11)

the ps3 set itself to aim at a different croud than the others. its a highball, highballin with the devil right now, and who knows whats in store.

Comment by: ggo70 (Jan 13, 2007 17:55)

One million shipped, 400,000+ sitting on store shelves. Sony, hurry up and fix the problems and release something that worth spending over 800 dollars on. The people will start to buy them.

Comment by: UHALL (Jan 13, 2007 21:53)

every store I go to there is no big push to buy the Ps3. I live in the CHI. burbs and just got home from meijer they have 8 Ps3 on there shelves and they have been there for 5 days with no buyer in line, on the other hand they got 3 Wii in 2 days ago they were gone in 45 min. I am not saying anything, I am just saying what i was told, Know what I'm saying. Sony lower your Price before the Ps3 becomes Beta all over agin.

Comment by: UHALL (Jan 13, 2007 21:56)

I actually like the Ps3 but I can't stand Sony the company. They make great products but thier bedside manner sucks for such a big company.

Comment by: SakuSan (Jan 15, 2007 19:18)

We Have neither PS3's or Wii's. All thier is, is the Xbox 360's which everybody has (I'm not a fan of the Xbox). The Wii is so damn rare in Hawaii. My friend that works at Walmart told me they only got like 20 Wii's in stock. I really want the Wii more then the Ps3 cause ir's cheaper then it.

Comment by: SakuSan (Jan 15, 2007 19:26)

Sony Make's good earphones like their noise canceling ones (the big one). The PS3's are great but most of my PS2 games will be useless when I Get a PS3. I got alot of old games.

Who told you this because this is not even true its the 360 that has this major issue we talking just about all XBOX games compared to 300 or 400 games for the PS3.Less than that because Sony send out a patch month ago that fixed alot of PS2 games on the PS3 system.

anubis66,

Why don't you learn how to spell, or at least use a spell checker before hurling insults. Maybe you should read more instead of playing video games because your lack of intelligence is showing through.

And Bobbyblu, you're just a junior member like many of us here. Who gives you the right to tell anyone to only speak when spoken to? Who the hell are you! Just try and say that to somebody’s face instead of hiding behind an alias and IP address. If you did, I don't think that you'd be on this planet for very long!

And by the way Wii rocks! They are selling like hot cakes! Go to any game or electronics store and see if you can find one! However, there are plenty of PS3s at the stores for those who want them!

To put it sweet and simple don't let your mouth write a check that you azz can't cash.

Comment by: Edgewise (Jan 17, 2007 15:23)

i agree with bobbyblu and anubis.

Everyone loves to shut the ps3 and sony down by its "overprice"...which it isnt, and about how some people say that the wii is selling oh so great and the ps3 isnt at all: have you thought of the possibility (emphasize possibility) that nintendo hasnt been shipping as many wii's as sony has been shipping ps3's,?

Comment by: UHALL (Jan 18, 2007 00:08)

How on earth can any of you sit there and type all this bullshit. All of you know that the Ps3 and the 360 are overpriced systems, you know this but you still defend the company's who just gives you one more hit to keep you stoned. You guys remind me of a drug addict, you can't see the truth because your waiting for your next high from MS or Sony.

Comment by: Edgewise (Jan 18, 2007 11:24)

thats the thing, they aren't overpriced. For what you are getting, it is actually cheap. Not even looking at the gaming power, the ps3 has the Blu-ray drive (blu-ray players are like $1000 alone) and 360(with the hd-drive which makes it the same price as the ps3) has the hd dvd which those players are $500 and $800 (which i've heard aren't that high quality of players either)

Comment by: johnblaze (Jan 18, 2007 11:58)

The reason people say the PS3 is "overpriced" is because it costs $500-$600 to play a game, the 360 costs $300-$400 to do the same thing, and the Wii costs $250. Also, at the moment, the PS3 only offers 1 good game that is not on the 360, but that should change soon.

Comment by: hughjars (Jan 18, 2007 12:30)

There's no point trying to argue with the customer that they're wrong.

The fact is the market does see the PS3 as grossly over-priced and it is not buying.

You can shout and scream about this as much as you like but it remains true and the sales tills remain silent.

They've given out the prices now so expect more of the same (after the inevitable - short - fanboy rush) when this hits Europe and the UK and Ireland.

here are some things to take into consideration. one of the top selling products on Circuit City's website is no other than the ps3. this was taken directly from their site:
Top-SellingProducts
• Sony PlayStation 3 (60GB)
• Apple 30GB Color iPod with Video
• Griffin iPod Charger
• Acer Aspire 15.4" Widescreen Notebook PC
• World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade

if you go to bestbuy.com and try to buy a ps3, you'll find yourself at a dead end as they are all sold out (60gig, bundles too). this was copied and pasted from their site as well, sorry no glamour here

this is bestbuy were talking about, a major electronic retailer not CVS. so make what you will, but the ps3 is selling one way or another...

now a store may have 5 ps3s available today, but just because you or someone else comes strolling along 3 days later and sees 5 ps3s still there, doesn't necessarily mean that those are the same units you saw before. sony has reportedly gone on record and said they are airlifting these things as quickly as possible. stores just might have a limited stock. now when i go to the local target they have their ps3s behind a glass case with the games. now i don't think its all coincidental that there is also a limited amount of room behind that case for them to put them out. so when someone buys a ps3 i don't think it is out of this world to think that it just might be possible that at some point in time during the day, someone may come along and replace the sold unit. so guess what 5 more units are once again available for sale...

if someone is soooooo content on the idea that the ps3 is not selling at all and literally has no life, by all means go to your local electronics store. while you are there you should go and mark each ps3 box so that you can periodically check whether or not the 5 ps3s you saw earlier are the same ones that are still sitting there when you do your rounds.

no one here(myself included) can really say for sure what is going on with ps3 sales other than it already outdid the 360's initial launch. pretty interesting given it still has yet to launch in an entire REGION. so given the lackluster exclusive titles the 360 had for nearly 9 months, its reported 'success'(number of units sold), and i really don't understand why so many feel the ps3 is certain to fail. seems like it may have a leg up on things. just because the ps3 is $100/$200 more really isn't enough justification because the majority of people in this world will pay to get what they want. the problem now is there really isn't anything spectacular(GoW) that could influence or increase overall demand.

how many times have people seen this:
"i'll wait for the bugs to get worked out"
"i'll wait for some good games to get released"
"i'll wait for a price drop"
demand is still there....

some other things for people to consider about ps3 demand.
a. for most adults tax season is quickly approaching
b. the xmas holiday rush has ended
c. the bills from xmas are coming due
d. lack of blockbuster games
to me those are 4 MAJOR factors that could very well influence decision making for many individuals.

i could have also thrown the wii into the mix, but most would agree that the target market for the wii and ps3 probably aren't the same.

very nice post, thank you

yes, kudos. i agree, people think the stock is something to cry about.

You can buy a Ps3 at any store there is no shortage and BB is not sold out neither is target or meijer or wally world or circuit city. You guys need to lay off the sony coolaid because you are seeing things and reading things that only you can see. You guys like your system, great your suppose to otherwise you wouldn't buy it, but you need to face realality about the Ps3 it is stalled in its attemp to become the almighty best game system. I am not saying nothing bad about the ps3 but you all need to face the facts that the Ps3 has falling on its face and is geting beat to death by the Wii. Go ahead and deny all you want the only person your are lying to is yourself.

A report shown on Tuesday showed that more than half a group of surveyed stores in the United States had Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) console in stock. "Our channel checks yesterday of 52 retail stores, from boutiques to big-box retailers, showed that 28 of the 52 stores had PS3 consoles in stock, while none had Wii consoles in stock," American Technology Research analyst Paul-Jon McNealy said in the research note.

He noted that most of the stores had just 1 digit figures of stocks while only one had more than 60 units on offer. With supply shortages of the console lasting since its mid-November launch, many have interpreted the available stocks as being a sign of slowing demand for the console.

However, Sony spokesman Dave Karraker dismissed this belief by claiming that the company is airlifting more than 100,000 units to North America weekly. "It isn't because demand has weakened, it is because we have kept the supply pipeline moving," he said.

According to analyst Nomura Securities, Sony will miss its sales target of 6 million PS3 consoles by the end of March 2007 by 25%. This would lower the total sales to 4.5 million by the end of the Sony's fiscal year. The analyst blames poor sales of the console over the holiday period (caused by several supply problems) for the new predictions.

To emphasize how it believes this will affect sales in the long-term the analyst also gave predictions for the year ending March 2008, with a reduction from the predicted 16 million figure to 10 million. Then to go one year further to the year ending March 2009, it predicts a reduction from the 18 million figure to 11 million.

Sony has shipped over 1 million PS3 consoles to the North American market and according to NPD, has sold 687,000 of those units in the region. The PS3 console is expected to launch in Europe in March 23rd.

why did you just triple post by reposting the articles on here?

not sure what that is intended towards, but if it is in reference to what i posted above, i never said the stores were sold out. i noted that they are soldout on BB's website...

"He noted that most of the stores had just 1 digit figures of stocks while only one had more than 60 units on offer."
again im not sure how or why so many feel the system has already failed and had a terrible launch when it already outdid the 360's launch. as it says above 1 digit figures, which could mean 1-9 units available which doesn't seem like a large surplus. not sure how that translates into "failing" miserably.

can't really argue with that one as there aren't too many blockbusters coming out till atleast march, the shortage at launch and xmas season also hurt sales. hard to sell something that isn't available. im sure the ps3 would have sold as well as the wii had they had that many units available. something nintendo managed and executed very well. so this news of altering sales targets wouldn't be too surprising. although, there was another company that also re-adjusted their sales figures for a certain month. again if those figures hold, and this is off the top of my head here, i think sales would be fairly close inline with that of the 360 during its first four months or so.

Quote:
After reporting that financial analysts had downgraded the holiday sales figures of the Xbox 360 (see our previous coverage), Microsoft now admits it will miss Xbox 360 target launch numbers. According to Microsoft, major shortages of Xbox 360 units have adversely affected the previous sales goal of nearly three million units, bringing the number down to roughly 1.3 million actual units sold (according to some analysts). So instead of dwelling on the failures of the present, Microsoft is regrouping and predicting brand new sales numbers for later this year. Hoping that shortages will be corrected, Microsoft now predicts that it will sell 4.5 million to 5.5 million Xbox 360 units by the end of June. Whether or not the company will make this new goal remains to be seen. One thing is certain, however: Microsoft needs to address glitches like the disc scratching issue (see our previous coverage) if sales numbers are going to increase dramatically. Thanks to GameDaily Biz for the heads-up.

i think im starting to sound like a broken record here. i find it hard to be convincing that even if the ps3 follows suit with the 360s launch, that it would subsequently spell imminent doom for them. not sure why people are trying to impose the ol'double standard here. hmmm could it be the lower pricetag, or the release of a system without any competition?

seems hard to predict long term analysis considering markets can change relatively quick, especially with the release of a few killer apps which the ps3 lacks atm. it'll be interesting to see how the public reacts to the release of say MGS/DMC/FF which have always been very popular in both the US and Japan(the two larger gaming markets).

For all of those you who haven't still realized the fact that "if sounds too good to be true, it most likely is". All of the "free iPod", "free PSP", "free whatever" scams are typically either

a) pure scams that don't give you anything in return, but want your credit card details or personal details and pass these to criminal organizations that eventually will sky-rocket your CC bills or sell your personal details to spammers, etc with a label "dumb, naive and very likely to buy your next scam promotion item"

b) unlawful lotteries in which you purchase worthless item and hope to win something. CC details, etc have the same treatment as above.

c) illegal pyramid schemes where only the guys who actually set up the scheme win something. Pyramid schemes are illegal in virtually all Western countries and for those of you who religiously believe that you might get something once you move a slot up in your pyramid -- with the time you've wasted on such schemes, you would have probably worked in real-life job and earned enough cash to buy 10 PSPs, iPods, etc.
