NGP digital downloads will be available same day as retail

DVDBack23 @ Mar 21, 2011 22:55 | 14 comments

Sony Europe president Andrew House has said today that digital downloads of upcoming NGP games will be available the same day as their retail counterparts, which are available on a type of flash media.

All games will be available as digital downloads, and House even admits that some games will only be digital, with no physical version.

Says the president (via electronista):

One thing we learnt from PSP, is that we want to have simultaneous delivery in digital and physical for NGP. Just to clarify that, all games that appear physically will be made available digitally. Not necessarily all games have to be made available physically. And having the option of a digital-only method affords more creative risk-taking, and that’s because you don’t-have that in-built risk of physical inventory.

House expects NGP gaming will move to a tiered structure, where larger, "premium" games will still command higher prices but other, smaller titles will be available for download only, at a cheaper price point.

For controls, the handheld adds dual micro-analog sticks, giving gamers a feature they begged for on the original PSP.

The device has a massive 5-inch multi-touch OLED screen with 960×544 resolution, a multi-touch panel on the back and will run on a quad-core ARM cortex processor.

Sony has added tilt-sensitive SIXAXIS controls, standard and front-side cameras, GPS, an electric compass, Wi-Fi and 3G support, and access to Android gaming.

The NGP is expected to sell for $300, $50 more than the rival Nintendo 3DS.

Nice, I'd like to see all the PSP stuff on the PSN on it ASAP. (would like the PS3 to run PSP/PSP2 stuff as well but that is a pipe dream....)

Until lobbying is a hanging offense I choose anarchy!
Ah modern gaming its like modern film only the watering down of fiction and characters is replaced with shallow and watered down mechanics, gimmicks and shiny-er "people".

I bet somewhere in their Terms and Service it says they have the right to take their games back at anytime; that's my biggest beef with digital only.

Hopefully by the time this comes out nobody will be buying Sony's stuff anymore.

It is a very neat device, and if sony had not picked so many fights with me recently, I would probably be in line the night before like some kind of apple fan or something...but I can't change the past, and sony won't change their ways. They are always trying to find new ways to screw over their customers, and this device seems to have plenty of customer-screwing capabilities.

With all the talk/rumors of the NGP being able to play PS3/PSN games (or vice versa) your dream might just come true. Add in the newest addition to PS+ (Cloud GameSaves) to the mix and it might actually be possible to truly have a cross over console/mobile platform that works seamlessly with each other.

That's kind of the idea. You can buy all the games you want, but if they feel like it or don't like you, they can simply block your account from your legally purchased games.
Great huh? Look at Steam...

Wow. How often is Sony "taking back" digital products? I've been buying digital since day one on PS3 and have NEVER had a problem. Also, I've got four PSP's and have only had to buy a game once and have been able to copy them over to all four PSP's at no additional cost! So as far as I'm concerned, Sony has been very generous with their digital products.

Been hearing a little from Kojima as well about NGP/PS3 inter-playability.

Yep, same thing here, digital or physical discs, don't care, day one purchase for me :) That thing is slick, if you want the closest console experience with portability, this is it!
