Group releases open-sourced PSGroove PS3 jailbreakDVDBack23 @ Sep 01, 2010 23:53 | 35 comments
This week, PSGroove, the "open source PSJailbreak," has been released for the masses, giving owners a chance to jailbreak their PS3 for a lot cheaper than the $170 PSJailbreak.
The code can be run on a hacked PSP, a TI-84 calculator, a $25 Teensy++ USB development board or a $30 AT90USBkey.
Currently, the Teensy is on backorder and buyers will likely receive it a week or so after they order it.
While the software initially had any piracy features disabled, a second build has been released with all features of PSJailbreak enabled. The software will allow for the execution of unsigned 3rd-party apps and games as well as ISOs of PS3 games.

Comment by: biglo30 (Sep 02, 2010 04:26) This is pretty cool no more updating for me lol. I have been waiting for the source to be released, with the power this thing has homebrew is like a must! I also want to see custom firmware like the psp had for so long. So hopefully as time goes by they can make something where it just installs on the ps3 so you won't need the dongle anymore. Just my thoughts for the future maybe they will be reality :D |
Comment by: WierdName (Sep 02, 2010 05:59) Quote: 'Can be run' is present tense indicating it can already be done. As far as I know reading the thread in the link, that is yet to be the case. Just a note for others glancing over at their TI-84 calcs.
Doesnt expecting the unexpected make the unexpected expected and therefore mean youre expecting the expected which was the unexpected until you expected it?

Comment by: snaketus (Sep 02, 2010 14:25) And just because some people have to do this kind of shit. Legit users suffer. They belong to jail. |
Comment by: whatevs (Sep 02, 2010 15:43) Website is down. I wonder what kind of drama is behind this... |
Comment by: Mysttic (Sep 02, 2010 15:54) Quote: Okay now that is harsh, I fail to see how people sharing information should belong in jail; unless they are doing it to make profit. That in my mind is pirating, ripping off copyrighted material to earn $ off it. But if you doing it for yourself for your own use, I don't see how it causes any harm.
Quote: True, I suppose if you want to look at it that way, but then it's a constant pain in the... In the end tho all of you are right, the more corporations fight piracy the more piracy fights back. And although it was once believed PS3 would be impenetrable, piracy only proved with a lot of patience, you can hack anything.
Quote: 360's still sell for $300 and a PS3 isn't worth it how? Wow I never thought I'd say that..., I used to be against PS3 but for some reason I find it reasonable, despite having 2 of em die on me in the same month. Still those were older models,.. You know what forget I said anything.
Quote: This exploit has been out for a few days before Afterdawn posted it, I had the files for a while but couldn't do anything with them, as I still don't have the key. So far there haven't been any bricked PS3's to my knowledge, but I wouldn't say just yet it 100% safe. Still I don't think there is much chance of this one going wrong.
Quote: The drama is site updates, it's back up now. |
Comment by: biglo30 (Sep 02, 2010 17:18) Originally posted by snaketus: You can't get mad because people want to mod their rightfully own and paid for system. Yes I know maybe the majority of them when to do this for piracy but there is still a few people who just want a good homebrew scene, like some custom firmware that will enable more video codecs like MKV or some emulators for older games. I think Sony really bought this on themselves when they removed the OtherOS although I know a lot of us didn't use it, really pissed of a lot of people and made the modding community work harder. |
Comment by: Gradical (Sep 02, 2010 19:28) I want Homebrew so I can buy a PS3 and play all of the ps1+ps2+ps3 games in one console

Comment by: Mysttic (Sep 03, 2010 14:14) My biggest concern is online play; I got everything I need now to exploit the PS3, but I love Borderlands and maybe a couple of other multi-player online games. The hardest decision is risking the ability of losing online connectivity with Sony. I honestly don't feel like buying a seperate one for backups or homebrew only. |

Comment by: 713tex (Sep 07, 2010 03:47) PS3-hacks has just reported that Sony's new 3.42 update patches this exploit.

Comment by: ititoko (Sep 09, 2010 17:53) Originally posted by fandr78: The TI-84 hack reputedly works, and it has been updated to the latest version (@brandonlwilson on twitter). It must be a TI-84 -- not an 83. The 83 does not have a USB controller on-board, and this hack relies on the presence of the usb controller.
