Sony: PlayStation 4 games already in development

According to Game Informer Australia, Sony is already preparing games for the upcoming PlayStation 4, the console which has not even been announced yet.

Rumors of the PlayStation 4 have been around since the start of the year, with most expecting a 2012 launch.

While Sony's talk of games is not a direct announcement of the upcoming console, it does make sense that the company is preparing its publishing partners for the eventual launch. Most games take over 16 months to develop, so it is completely necessary for developers to know the specs of the new console at least a few years before its launch.

Sony has long said the PS3 will have a decade-long lifespan, and we are currently only in the fourth year of the life cycle. The now aged PS2 had a decade long lifespan as well, despite the PS3 being launched in 2006.

The company did not comment on the story, but Game Informer has it in their news section, not in the rumors section.

@patrick Yes, I think your on the ball here -- tho pretty sure it's nVidia in the PS3 and ATI in the 360 -- Sony's best tactic this time would be to make it fully backwards compatible for the PS3.

Its a lot easier being righteous than right.

I welcome the changes, the gaming industry is constantly changing, let it be 3D or something else, the more choices for the gamers, the better it is, no? Besides, you don't have to buy anything, it's a free world after all :)

Did Sony make some mistakes when it comes to the PS3? Yes. Did it hurt them initially? Yes. That being said, the PS3 as of June 2010 has sold only 3 million less units than the 360 which came out a full year earlier. The PS3 had a larger HD, Blu-Ray, Wi-Fi internet connection, and wireless controllers. When my buddy and I went out to buy the 360 to play Halo 2 on, we were blown away on how much MORE it cost us to buy all the extras to make it similar to the PS3. Sony is finally getting their marketing right. It DOES do everything. Now the games coming out are absolutely amazing, i.e. Little Big Planet 2. I do think that 6 years is too early AND too late for a PS4. Too early because the PS3 is still highly capable and too late because how fast hardware changes. I would only consider getting a PS4 if the price wasn't too high.

ah but gimmicks are often copied,3d wont be any difference. then you must realize the potential downfall to the gimmick is that not everyone brains can process the extra information myself included. i can only view 3D if it being powered by a VR headset, even that makes my head feel like it'll explode.

its like listening to a surround sound system with the speaker polarity swapped while playing it on a CRT with 60Hz. man that stuff can cause brain damage, no joke.

Why would you buy a 360 to play a 6 year old game? Your post shows nothing but blatant fanboyism. How do you know little big planet 2 is amazing? It's not out yet. The first looked amazing too, and look how bad it was. The new 360 has built in wifi, a bigger hard drive than the bottom level PS3, and the 360 has better wireless controllers.

I mean come on.

You could have at least said you can use your own hard drive in the PS3. You could have said online play was free.

with that being said. i'm sure its quite normal for development kits to be handed out years before a new console is released. to allow time for practice at the new Game development mechanics. i don't think Sony is going to stick with the cell Processor, i think they'll go with something more familiar. which is a waste, considering all those dev teams that actually had to learn to program for cell.

Your "point" is opinion based just as much as alexeemo's was. Difference is alexeemo's point/opinion is supported by LBP 1 winning numerous awards and accolades plus some Game of the Year awards. And from all accounts in the gaming media LBP 2 with PS Move is looking to be even better, especially because it is backwards compatible with LBP 1 levels.

That again is opinion based on 2 accounts. Better meaning feel or better meaning wireless ability. I believe the 360's d-pad is down right terrible along with the triggers for games like fighters. PLUS they're standard wireless not BT (which is actually better), don't come rechargable batteries out the box and the battery pack on the bottom can be quite uncomfortable as well. But that is my own opinion mixed with some known fact.

I don't even own halo? It's not a very good game. Call of duty has gone downhill as well.

You must not have read the article. If they release a PS4 by 2012, then the PS3 will only be 6 years old by then. Talk about a fanboy! LBP1 has changed gaming forever. Name one 360 game or any other game that exists that has over 2 million community levels. Oh, that's right, you can't! Just because you didn't like it(which you probably never played it seeing that you are the actual 360 fanboy)that doesn't mean it wasn't great. I've seen over a dozen clips of game play for LBP2 and it will certainly be the biggest game release of 2010. But let's back up my claim that you are the fanboy. Let's see, I quote,"The new 360 has built in wifi, a bigger hard drive than the bottom level PS3, and the 360 has better wireless controllers." Your fanboy argument has all the textbook markers. How long did it take MS to finally build wi-fi into their console. When we bought our external wi-fi for my friends 360, it was a pain in the arse to fit on the back. Second, I bought an original 60gb PS3 with full backwards campatibility, I own 15 games, and I still have over 34gb of space left. Last but not least. your lame opinion that 360 wireless controllers are better. Maybe they are, I don't think they are, but that is clearly only a matter of shear opinion and NOT a fact. Fanboy evidence for the 360 has been presented and you have been found guilty and left wanting....wishing you didn't waste your money on a system that is only great for 1 game i.e. Halo. To be fair, I really do love the 360 for playing some of it's exclusives. I even had one for this summer when my brother-in-law lived with me for a while while going through his divorce. I absolutely love Halo online and XBOX Live is better than PSN(it should be considering you pay for it). I only went off on andmill11 cause he clearly didn't read what I said.

I agree. I borrowed my brother-in-law's GOW 1&2 collector's edition and GOW 3. They were so good, my wife played them!

Humph, since this thread has been allowed to take this direction I think it's fair if a bit of balance is bought into these equations.

It's my opinion that regardless of all the awards that LBP has won it's a big "meh" from me as well. I thought it had a lot of promise too but the gameplay just let it down. All the honest critics I read said the same thing too. Let's hope that it's sequel improves on that.

Inbuilt wireless may be new for the X360 but at least it's N wireless. I use N at home and I can tell you from personal experience it craps on G and not just by a bit, from a great height. I can be a couple of rooms away and can get bittorrent DLs at over 600kBs as opposed to 50 odd with G. This has to be significant for online gaming regardless whether it's new.

What's said about the HDD situation is fair. It's worthwhile remembering, however, that it will probably be pretty easy to hack a replacement HDD for use in a new X360, as it is now for anyone canny enough to do so. And you don't get banned for it.

It's frankly stupid to say Halo is the only decent exclusive game on X360 to play... it's never been my favourite anyway. I will say that the PS3 has some great exclusives too. However, many cross platform games play better on the X360, Bayonetta for example really suffers on the PS3 (see youTube), but I'm sure the reverse is true for other X-platform games. So it's six of one, half a dozen of the other in my book

I always find the arguments about the relative merits on the controllers amusing especially the stuff about charging. Certainly it's true that the Dpad on the X360's is crap, the asymmetry can be off-putting initially but it's really robust and solid and will last for years. The triggers (and the rest) are excellent regardless of what others may say and the wireless has never let me down. I talking about heavy fast hardcore arcade style gaming (like Bayonetta). I can't agree BT is better (and I use both)... and I'm not saying it's worse. On the charging front any idiot knows enough to go out and buy a cheap AA NiMH fast-charge pack for 24/7 gaming... and it can be used for other products. It's battery pack has never impeded my gaming pleasure, I never notice it. I'll end this one by saying I'm a huge fanboy of Xpadder (on PC). On that site's forum no-one disses anybody else on their choice of controller, it's personal, however the X360's is far the most popular.

I certainly hope the PS4 will be awesome... and backward compatible. With true multi-core and a better GPU. Still, my PC's new GFX card cost more than a PS3 and X360 combined (well a few months ago) coz I want high anti-aliased 1080p gaming NOW!

Sony should be the only company making Multi-capable Gaming systems. Sony knows what they are doing. sure they make a few mistakes here and there. Microsoft and Nintendo aren't perfect either.

Sony Quit Making video Game Systems I'll quit Gaming...Unless by some miracle Sega starts a new. from Nintendo gamer to Sega to Sony Fan. I'll die with Sony.

no way! this is a prime time, to be honest they could release the playstation 4, almost same specs as the ps3 with a better sdk for the developers and do amazing! the quality of games would increase 10 fold, and the number of games would just explode... i have been following the playstation 4 at http://sonyps4.com for awhile now and think that this could really be something great based on how they go with it. just making the development kit for the games easier to use would do wonders for the playstation console as a whole, if there was one complaint for the ps3 it is that the sdk is too difficult to utilize.
