Sony unveils PS3 firmware 3.15 with Minis, data transferDVDBack23 @ Dec 08, 2009 18:57 | 28 comments
The first is the addition of the PSP Mini emulator to the PS3, allowing for playback of the Minis from your home console as well as your handheld. If you own any Minis already for the PSP, you can re-download it free from the PS Store for the PS3.
The second feature is data transfer between PS3s, which Sony explains as follows:
This feature enables you to easily transfer all of your saved data from one PS3 to another. So if you decide to get a new PS3 you can make sure you don’t loose any of your existing content. Content such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from PlayStation Network can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3. Other content, including personal media files (photos, music, videos), can be copied onto the new PS3 and remain on the current PS3 system.
The process is really simple
1. Turn both the current PS3 (A) and new PS3 (B) on and connect them with a LAN cable; PS3 (A) should be connected to the TV 2. On the XMB of PS3 (A), scroll to the Settings menu and select [System Settings] and then [Data Transfer Utility] 3. Follow the instructions on-screen and transfer data 4. After transferring the data, follow the instructions on-screen, and then connect PS3 (B) to the TV to view the XMB 5. If content that was downloaded from PlayStation Store was transferred as part of this operation, you must activate PS3 (B) before you can use the data. Log in to the PS3 system as the user who owns the content, and then select (PlayStation Network) > (Account Management) > (System Activation) to activate the system

Comment by: wiimatrix (Dec 08, 2009 20:39) How many machines "could" this update ruin? |
Comment by: SDF_GR (Dec 08, 2009 20:42) If you can have downloaded content activated to both systems,

Comment by: rosedog (Dec 09, 2009 01:17) Why can't I just transfer game saves via a USB thumbdrive? |
Comment by: Oner (Dec 09, 2009 01:52) Originally posted by rosedog: You can, but some game makers request that their gamesaves are locked so you can't. ![]() Search > http://forums.afterdawn.com/search Rules > http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2487 Important Rule > http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/380660 |
Comment by: TypeRice (Dec 09, 2009 03:42) Street Fighter 4 is one of the games you can't transfer saved game onto USB drive. |
Comment by: KillerBug (Dec 09, 2009 03:53) They should have done this before the launch of the slim...I bet they did some study that showed that people were not upgrading to the slim because of concerns over the work involved, locked gamesaves & DRM videos. Once it could be translated into sales, they had immediate incentive to fix the issue.

Comment by: kyo28 (Dec 09, 2009 08:02) Originally posted by DXR88: That doesn't work. I went from a PS3 60GB to a PS3 slim and if you just swap the hard drives, the PS3 can't use that data since it's console-locked and will format the drive.

Comment by: DXR88 (Dec 09, 2009 08:08) well that clears it, so its locked to a console interesting. |
Comment by: xnonsuchx (Dec 09, 2009 13:16) Originally posted by DXR88: Yes...I believe Sony made that clear quite some time ago as I remember reading that tidbit when I upgraded my 60GB to a 250GB over a year ago. It would also make sense not to allow 'Other OS'-formatted HDs to be put into new PS3 Slim units that don't support it. |

Comment by: beanos66 (Dec 09, 2009 15:42) connect the two ps3s together? fail!

Comment by: DoggRuff (Dec 09, 2009 17:12) Originally posted by beanos66: So, you mean to say that you've gone through 5 dead PS systems total?? Where are you storing your systems, in the oven? If I were in your position, I probably would've given up on Sony by now if not on gaming altogether... geez, bad luck man. |
Comment by: Oner (Dec 09, 2009 18:18) I was sooo hoping when I read up on this the other day that it would be the PS Cloud I read about a long while back...but it's not. Sony really needs to have a solution for us that have multiple PS3's and want...scratch that ~ NEED to have a shared/cross network gamesave solution of some sort to centralize our saves (if possible). Hopefully from what I read PS Cloud is that solution...question remains to IF and WHEN it may materialize. ![]() Search > http://forums.afterdawn.com/search Rules > http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2487 Important Rule > http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/380660 |
Comment by: borhan9 (Dec 09, 2009 19:45) Nothing major in my book. My question is what update is this firmware upgrading going to be doing that we don't know about. |
Comment by: Crickly (Dec 09, 2009 21:03) I would go and buy another PS3 tomorrow if I could stream content from one PS3 to another PS3 wirelessly. Maybe it is already possible but I have not found out how to do this. So Sony please make this a possibility and sell me another machine. |
Comment by: Oner (Dec 09, 2009 22:14) They should actually implement the Gamesaves being locked to your PSN ID instead of to the system. But there is a "bypass" I came across over @ Gaf (all props goes to the original poster(s)) ~

Comment by: cee43ja1 (Dec 09, 2009 23:10) hopefully this will fix the DS3 unsync problems. my brother had it happen when he was playing NBA 2k10. i resetted and resync at least four times before it would be stable wirelessly. |
