PSN to be down during GamesComDVDBack23 @ Aug 18, 2009 08:15 | 12 comments
While the service is down, PSP and PS3 gamers will not be able to play online or access the store.
Rumors have been floating around that the store is closed so Sony can release, unannounced, firmware 3.0 which could possibly bring software emulation for PS2 backwards compatibility.
GamesCom is the expected announcement date for long awaited PS3 price cuts. |

Comment by: xnonsuchx (Aug 18, 2009 12:47) If it (backwards compatibility) does come out, it'll only be up to about 75-80% compatibility. I thought MS was improving their backward compatibility...did they quit updating it??? Also, it's been reported elsewhere that 3.0 firmware probably won't be out for another 6-8 weeks, so it COULD just be some major updates to PSN itself.

Comment by: rvinkebob (Aug 18, 2009 19:52) I think they may be updating PSN as mentioned in the conference, but who knows. I'm still angry that the VidStore hasn't opened in Canada, but is now opening in Europe... ![]() |
Comment by: Hopium (Aug 18, 2009 21:46) i remember reading that the emotion engines in the original 60gb ps3's had something like 96% playback compatibility in comparison to the software emulation on the 20gb that was roughly 80%. why cant they bring the emotion engine back now that they report they cut costs in half. to this day if i ever decide to buy a ps3(if they release more disgaea titles im gonna have to) then its definitely gonna be a used 60gb with the EE. only cause i have a large library of ps1/ps2 games. otherwise backward compatibility is a big load of crap, next we gonna see genesis cartridges shoved into wii's cause it said it played classic titles |
Comment by: DXR88 (Aug 18, 2009 22:10) Originally posted by Hopium: XBox360 BC is also around 80%. it will never be 100% because some games call on hardware extensions that just aren't there. the EE&GS chip is the PS2, thats why it been near about 100% BC for PS3. the EE chip alone adds a good $80 to $90 to the manufacturings cost this is not what Sony or consumers want.

Comment by: KillerBug (Aug 19, 2009 04:56) I just want to play GT4 again; I haven't played it since I burned up my PS2. I'd buy another copy off the PSN if they would sell it (for a reasonable price).
