Microsoft slams Sony after February console sales figuresDVDBack23 @ Mar 23, 2009 03:32 | 35 comments
Greenberg noted that Microsoft had a 53 percent annual sales boost for the 360 gaming console, "exceeding" its expectations. Sony on the other hand, had a year-on-year decline in sales and the director blamed that mainly on the PS3's price point, which is more expensive then the 360 and the current market share leader, the Nintendo Wii.
For February in the US, almost 400,000 360s were sold, while the PS3, despite having a strong month, lagged at 275,000. Over 130,000 PS2s were sold for the month, and Greenberg says that PS2 owners are slowly converting to the 360.
"What we're finding in our research is that a large portion of the volume we're driving with Xbox 360 purchasers is actually PS2 owners choosing Xbox for the next generation," Greenberg adds. "Xbox continues to head north while the PS3 is heading south. We're gaining share."
Despite the jabs from Microsoft against Sony, Nintendo continues to destroy both systems in sales, selling over 700,000 units in February with no signs of slowing down. |

Just because the low end 360 is dirt cheap, doesn't mean you can compare it to a PS3. I wouldn't want the PS3 stripped down to bare-bones, even if it made it cheaper. XBL is not PSN and PSN is not XBL. They appeal to different crowds. Free is fine with me. My video game console is not my social interface. Who cares if Sony lags MS? They still had a good month. Aaron Greenberg slams Sony for what? Not playing the game with them? Apparantly Sony doesn't need to. If things were really bad for Sony, then we would probably see a price cut. But if people are still buying, why would they? |
Comment by: beanos66 (Mar 23, 2009 16:57) the ps2 owners who are buying consoles now are the sensible ones who were waiting for the price to come down, trouble is the price of the ps3 hasn't so they are going to 360 coz without backwards compatability there is no point waiting for a ps3 price drop |
Comment by: Morreale (Mar 23, 2009 20:31) I think another big factor in these console sales is whether or not it can play copied games or not. The Wii is so easy hack, a sack of potatoes can do it. I usually download Wii games because most of them are worthless anyways... Same with the 360. It more or less has the same games as the PS3 (except for the best games :]) which can all be copied and played on a modded 360. Me, a kid that was raised off of Playstation (Gran Turismo FTW), might actually consider a 360 just to mod and copy multiplatform games for because they're pretty much the same as what's on my PS3, but are free*. Like, come on. Every new game regardless what it is costs $60. MGS4 was $60 and so was Killzone 2 and Resistance 2, but Rainbow 6 Vegas 2? R6V2 doesn't even compare to the first 3 games, yet I payed the same price (well yea they're all newer but it still wasn't worth my money). Those would be the kind of games I would download. Overpriced garbage (EA) that deserves to be stolen. That and I can't afford every game I want to play! The idea I have, and I'm sure everyone else has, basically if you buy a used 360 and burn 4 games you've already gotten your money's worth out of it.

Comment by: trevermah (Mar 23, 2009 20:56) you shouldn't be writing information, that tells people to go and mod their system. the game's prices are what they are, usually the SAME price for both systems.

Comment by: cartucho (Mar 24, 2009 01:53) i dunno what u guys talking crap about but i paid over 600 for my 60gb ps3 and i love it. the machine is a beast and it finally getting AAA games. sure 360 is good but how can you backed up all claims specially when you talk shit about sells on the ps2? seriously if you wanna play the same game then ps2 130000 and xbox 1 = 0. people just do not get that the ps3 is not the only bussiness sony is running. add ps2 , add psp, add all blueray gains, plus ps3 bussiness. they are everywhere !! sounds brutal but is true and that y very unlikely they will never be out of bussiness. |

Comment by: bomber991 (Mar 24, 2009 02:17) Originally posted by cartucho: Same for Microsoft. They got the portable music market with Zune, they got practically a monopoly on operating systems, since pretty much every computer at any school, government building, and office runs on Windows. Sure there's linux and mac's, but 1% don't matter. They also have another just about monopoly on office programs. Again it seems like all schools, government buildings, and offices run Microsoft Office, even though there's the free and open source alternative of open office.

Comment by: Morreale (Mar 24, 2009 03:30) I'm surprised they don't come out with a revised console like Sony always does... Like maybe one with better ventilation and such, maybe make it smaller? Sony did it with the PS2, significantly, and it still ran cool and whatever... Well maybe not cool but mine never overheated after hours and hours of play, and it felt like a hot pan :S |
Comment by: varnull (Mar 24, 2009 03:30) Actually.. they were interested in liquid cooling around the time the console was first released, but rejected it on cost and complexity grounds.

Comment by: Morreale (Mar 24, 2009 03:44) Originally posted by varnull: I donno... If they come out with a new console in two years that basically matches the PS3 (could it be that much better after like 5 years? I think it won't be a jump like a PS2 game to a PS3 game this time around), I think the PS3 would have a huge advantage because there already will be tons of games for it and it will be cheaper then the new Xbox (a brand new console $200 off the bat?), which will have like nothing because it's new.

Comment by: emugamer (Mar 24, 2009 15:57) Sony can release a new console in 2 years as long as they stay true to form with how they handled the PS2 - producing games for 2 years alongside the PS3. I wouldn't jump on that bandwagon though. But I'd be happy holding on to the PS3. It's just a large investment to turn around in such a short time. I didn't spend as much on it though. $400 for the 40GB model. $42 for a second controller recently. Through coupons and promotion codes, I upgraded to a 320GB HDD for $50. I scored a USB-PS2 adapter for free and am able to use my Logitech wireless PS2 controller for a third controller. If friends come over, I always ask one of them to bring 1 PS3 controller. Works out fine. I feel like I spent the least amount I was willing to, for a solid machine that covers my gaming needs and my interest in bluray. Depending on how tech changes, I would drop another $500-$600 in a few more years. |
Comment by: kikzm33z (Mar 24, 2009 16:02) Sony needs a price drop to shut Microsoft up. |
Comment by: DXR88 (Mar 24, 2009 16:18) Originally posted by emugamer: Why they have no reason to release a new console one of the reasons the PS3 is so expensive is the technology behind it. it also happens to be its drawback. |
Comment by: emugamer (Mar 24, 2009 16:36) Quote:Originally posted by emugamer: I was just addressing a comment that was made that Sony will probably release a new console in 2 years anyway - which I don't happen to agree with. But, if they did, for whatever reason, then my above comment would hold. Like you, I personally don't see a reason why they would and don't expect it.

Comment by: Morreale (Mar 24, 2009 16:43) I bet if Microsoft were to release a new console in 2 years, Sony will just come out with a redesigned PS3 with a cheaper price tag. I'm sure that would have lot's of sales just because it's "new". Every other console redesign for whatever always seem to do well... |
Comment by: varnull (Mar 24, 2009 17:02) I just work on M$ and the way they go about things... 5 years life on a console.. then a new product.

Comment by: ZippyDSM (Mar 24, 2009 23:45) Quote:Quote:Originally posted by emugamer: I don't see a need for a new Sony console either as the price of the current PS3 250-350 is abotu the price of a new system. The PS3 has enough horse power to last 8 years or more. SO the main problem is Sony buckling down and doing what is needed to get the console in position to make money and that's reduce the price and a take a profit hit on the front end that's the only thing they can do with the business model they chose. |
