Latest PS3 firmware update hits consolesDVDBack23 @ Jan 21, 2009 19:38 | 23 comments
The update, version 2.60's, "key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.
The 2.60 update also includes:
* Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc. * DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3."
For those who do not have active Internet on their console, use this guide to learn how to get the update and update your console using a thumb drive:

|
Comment by: dsgtrain (Jan 21, 2009 20:19) I can't agree with you more. I would rather see MKV container support over DivX 3 anyday (afterall, the PS3 supports all the major codecs H.264, DivX, MP3, AAC, AC3, ect). But adding DivX 3 will help support more of the various types of DivX\XVID files. |
Comment by: spydah (Jan 21, 2009 21:37) I don't see a issue with this update. As long as it's not something I need to kick extra cash out for. I'm happy :) |
Comment by: SGSeries2 (Jan 21, 2009 22:25) Agreed w/ the divx 3 vs mkv bit. I'm curious where they got the feedback that divx 3 would be a 'hotter' feature to add over mkv, if that was their reasoning.

Comment by: Invasian (Jan 21, 2009 23:26) I guess an update is always good and that features is pretty cool from what I read. I wish you could created different folders under the movie section. I have Friends seasons 1-10 on there and have to scroll through quite a long list to get to an episode I want to watch. |

Comment by: Run4two (Jan 22, 2009 02:51) I'm just happy they are still improving. Let's face it. The PS3 came out as a gaming system +. Sony has made great improvements with all the firmware upgrades since launch. It is now a formidable media center, excellent bd player with bd live and what it can do with audio, and still an excellent evolving gaming system. Good things will continue to come.

Just select triangle, go to information, and then enter something like "Friends Season 1" under "Album". Unfortunately you'd have to do this for every episode, but when you're done, you can just sort by hitting square and it will create folders that are sorted by your Album title. I've done this for my videos and my games and it makes things much easier.

Comment by: blueroad (Jan 22, 2009 20:38) hmm guess i just expected more from this console..i realized now just how far fetched my expectations were..thought there would be good flash support movies online dowlnoadble stuff from the net rather then from the damn PSN for money..maybe even after a time,an OS so you could run stuff as if its a PC on ur TV..like i said, far fetched..uh well -_- |
Comment by: kikzm33z (Jan 22, 2009 20:54) They add a photo gallery that half the people won't use instead of in-game music which would be loved.

Comment by: emugamer (Jan 22, 2009 22:00) Originally posted by kikzm33z: I thought they couldn't add in-game music due to MS patents. The way around it was to have game developers program that functionality in each game if they so choose. I could be wrong though.

Comment by: domie (Jan 23, 2009 12:27) I already use my PS3 for viewing photos on my big tv so this is a welcome addition - free software is better than paying over $ 200 for a large screen photo frame |
Comment by: BobH29 (Jan 23, 2009 15:08) One thing to be aware of with this firmware update is that it will rebuild your hard drive's database. I lost all album art and album name changes associated with my music collection and album names associated with my photo collection. Bit of a pain considering the 300+ music albums and 500+ photos i had on the system, all carefully categorized! An afternoon spent redoing it today instead of playing Fallout 3.

Comment by: jtan189 (Jan 25, 2009 15:59) I'd love to see mkv support as well. That would help me to stop having to use mkv2vob just to watch HD content on my HDTV through my PS3. |
Comment by: emugamer (Jan 25, 2009 16:45) The update didn't wipe out my album art. Everything works great. Nice program. Just wish the I could play a different tune besides the muzak. The actual slideshow lets you choose your own music, but you only have the option to turn off the cheesy muzak when you're in the menu. Oh well. Still a nice program. |
