PS3 trophies will be mandatory beginning in 2009

DVDBack23 @ Nov 22, 2008 05:38 | 42 comments

According to VideoGamer, beginning in January 2009 all new Sony PlayStation 3 game releases will be required to support the popular Trophy system.

Despite being a rumor for a week or so, a Sony official has confirmed the information is correct, noting "Yes from Jan 09 all games must have trophies."

The Trophy system was added in July with the 2.40 firmware update and was seen as the PS3's answer to the popular achievement system on the Xbox 360.

Some people act as if the multiplat titles don't exist on the PS3.

They're supposedly going to put in a reward system for people with higher lvls, what the rewards are going to be are yet to be seen. Though a lot of people think that its likely going to be items for home.

I don't think achievements are a waste of time... do you think gaming is a waste of time too? It's for entertainment, if people are entertained by getting trophies then that's extra fun time for them.

i disagree with you im afraid, i think that getting a high achievement is quite pointless in the real world. YOu get your little sense of satisfaction but what else?

Though I don't hate them, what's the point in getting them for a bad game?

If I was finished everything in a game like Far Cry 2, I might try and complete the trophy list, but if the game was bad I'd just put it away forever and forget all about it.

Wouldn't your logic apply to all gaming in general? Gaming isnt about accomplishing things in the "real world" its about relaxing and having fun.

I think the trophy / achievement systems are a good thing for gaming, reasons being two-fold.

1. I am now happily playing through GTA IV for a second time since the trophy patch for that game was released. Without this incentive to replay, a game which had cost me £40 would continue to gather dust having been played through just the once (to 94% - just needed the jumps and pigeons first time around).

2. Many gamers, myself included, like to do everything they can in a game. To get the 100% completion purely for the personal satisfaction. I'm thinking of games like the Final Fantasy series, Oblivion, GTA series, etc. Trophies / achievements feed into this. The vast majority of the things needed to be done to gain a trophy I would have done anyway. To get a little picture on your online profile to mark these things is a nice little reward. And sometimes the best rewards have absolutely no tangible qualities at all!

Who said that if the game is bad that you got to play it just for Trophy's.I disagree Trophy's just give you a little more edge to complete games but some here don't understand that its for entertainment. Its Seem even when Sony try to do something they always get crapped on, by people who tend to open there mouth without doing any kind of research.

I just think it is sad that people have to be so narrow minded to complain about Sony (either they cannot afford one cause that bought a XBOX for 200.00) like I said somewhere before just cause they sell a lot does not make it good (360's) If Sony wants to make all games have trophies I say GREAT, I like the idea of having trophies, it brings a new level of competition to the game, and gives it a stronger replay value. If I am correct this thread is talking about Sony making sure those trophies will be mandatory beginning in 2009, not hearing people talking about Sony not making games they like or not. I (ME) like Sony and the idea of trophies. (But for who want to hate on the PS3...... read below)

I have an Xbox 360 also, and I hardly every play it because...... I (ME) think it's LAME. NO good games, in almost every way possible Microsoft has done what it always seem to do, Try to corner the market and fall so short, sell more units by unleashing second rate system, with borderline games and sudo companies (not including multi platform games) look at fable, Halo, Gears of War....All great games on the first system, THAT IS IT, the 360 version fall short. then must I really pay to play online with a game I just spent 60 buck's on, then look at NXE.....(like I really have to say anything here compared to PS HOME) but I will....WTF is NXE suppose to be? How are you to interact using these Lego looking avatars, to play Uno on a demo? I was so disappointed in the 360 with 20GB HD and NXE that I tried to sell mine at a pawn shop around the corner and the guy offered me 50.00 with Gears of war. TO hell with the 360!!!!!!!

My mistake,will rephraze it,
...cause they dont have a PS3.

Including the downloaded games from PS Store i must have about 20 games, and i really really dont care about trophies.

I enjoy the trophy system. It's not a deal breaker in buying a PS3, but it is entertaining. I'm not a big social gamer. I have a few online buddies that I'll meet up with once in a while, but mostly play online with close friends whom I have regular contact with. We've become comptetitve with getting trophies and it's become pretty fun fighting for who can get more - even the ridiculous ones (like a trophy for inviting a friend online). Our big competition now is starting Burnout again. There are challenging ones. Uncharted has some. Some of those made me revisit levels and have a different focus in how I went about completing them and how I approached them. Like getting a certain number of headshots, completing fight sequences in different ways, etc..

If games came with the trophy system built in, they would probably take me longer to complete. I like seeing the trophy logo pop up on top of the screen when I get one. It's a nice surprise when I'm not even trying to get one.

I hope that trophies do eventually translate to Home stuff. I'm doing the Home beta now and see a lot of potential. Even though Home is a great concept, I'm not the kind of person that will spend money on virtual stuff. Once I get asked to pull out my credit card to buy virtual clothing for my avatar, the fun stops. maybe I'm wrong about that. I just received the invite for the beta and am still exploring and reading about it.

i admit i'm one of those "who cares those stupid scores." However, after playing the Xbox for a year, every time the lower right corner says "you've earned XXX" it gives me some satisfaction of what i just accomplished. Do i need it? Not really... Does it make me feel special? Nope. Does it make me happy? Nah, maybe just a little. Most importantly, does it track my accomplishments? You bet... Not that i care or anything, but if a game have a little scoring system, i say, why not... After all, it's free, it's not like the game is gonna be more expensive or anything.

Does trophies or achievement points make me want to play the game more? Maybe... Do i buy the game solely base on that? No way. Do i want to compare my score to others? Well, nobody is good at every game, but i'm sure for the games you're good, you want the reputation, the pride and the glories.

Anyhow, the trophy system did make me replayed Stadust HD (and lured me into purchasing the add-on too). So, as a gamer, i say, bring it! If a dev is turned off by this, well, that dev doesn't deserve my money then... I mean how much more work can this scoring system be right? Oh, by the way, the same goes for subtitles... This should also be enforced in every game! God War I and II, shame shame... Do not let that happen again in III! Worse offense is Assassin's Creed, i've no clue what the characters were talking about most of the time...

These do no more than give you a sense of accomplishment and let others know where you are in any given game. I noticed while playing Dead Space (incredible game by the way), I received a trophy for doing just about everything in the game. Every time you finish a level, kill a boss, or even kill 30 enemies with each type of weapon you get trophies. I thought I was kicking some butt, I mean I was getting trophies left and right. Until I read what they were for and then I realized it wasn't really that much of an accomplishment, I was just playing the game. I could see if you received them for beating each level on hard but you get the same one if it's on easy.

Yeah deadspace's trophies were rather easy, the only one that took awhile to get was the trophy for fully upgrading your equipment. It only took me about 3 days to get platinum for it, great game though, but the trophies didn't add that much re-playability.

Bioshock is the only game I've seen that has a really hard trophy list, just from looking at it I haven't gotten a chance to play it yet.

The only place where trophies add a ton of replay time is for the online trophies, I know GTA4's wanted trophy is going to take forever and same with the 10 000 total kill trophies in R2 and BF:BC.

Also if this hasn't been mentioned yet, for all the multi-platform games I've seen trophies are identical to their achievement counterparts.

Well, not everybody is in the same position as you. Just a week later of the PS3 release, extremely hype, I bought not one, but two PS3 (cost of PS3's US.$ 600+tax each, playtime few hours per week, maybe),... and a year and a half later I bought a Xbox 360 (cost US.$ 177+tax) and guess which console I do play the most?

Beginning with, the Xbox 360 controller is way much more comfortable into the hands, the design, the buttons and the sticks are perfect located for fast reach, the rumble is much more stronger. Now on Games... the Xbox 360 exclusive games library is much larger than the PS3, even PS3 has to admit that games not build in Microsoft headquarters may be release for the Sony Entertainment as well at much later time, by the time its release for the PS3 the game itself is already old.

The only thing that we can agreed with is that I'm disappointed too.

(I wish that Sony Entertainment some day stops to fool around with the crap that a lot of people don't even care about, and start to build only Blu-ray Disc format the biggest and best gaming library intended for the BEST CONSOLE)

If the PS3 came out when the 360 came out (Nov 2005), and vice versa, guess which console would have the lead. I don't mean a huge lead, but it would've started off as strong as the PS2 did.

I hope trophies are worth something, cause it's giving me an incentive to complete all my games to 100% now :( :)

I have to mostly agree with what you said. I have all of the systems but I like the fact that Sony has pushed for more content on their system. Since May of this year they have improved greatly. Trophies should make the games more interesting. It will also draw more competitive gamers. But the Sony haters which i don't understand will always find some dumb reason to knock what they are doing. If they didn't do this. The complaints would be piling up. The majority of the games that have been released since May for the PS3 have shown the systems greatness. Now as for the 360. It has it's perks. The best would be the online play. But after that the multi-system games are fairly the same. I prefer the sports games on the PS3 over the 360. Plus as you said paying for a online service when I already pay for online period I think is dumb.
