First of all, dvd.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">HD DVD is dead. Everything Hi-Def on the 360 is downloadable content until/if they ever put out a BluRay drive. Secondly, you don't need the wireless adapter (£60) if you have wired Ethernet or an extra wireless router you can pick up for £20. You have a point that you need XBox Live at the £40/year but honestly I have both a PS3 and 360 and there is about 20 times more content on XBox Live and most of it is a LOT better. The reason the 360 is suddenly doing well in Japan is a combination of breaking the 30000 yen price point AND having a lot of excellent Japanese created RPGs available recently. Yes, MS probably paid for the development of the games to stimulate sales but it seems to be working, so it's hard to say that wasn't a good strategy.

Personally I think the only chance Microsoft has to maintain momentum in Japan is through XBL Arcade. They need to keep cranking out quality RPGs but once comparable RPGs start rolling out on PS3 (and they will, just look at PS2 3 years after launch...) it will be hard to survive against Sony. What MS can do, and do really well, is XBL Arcade. The games are consistently better than what Sony offers so far (with the exception of "The Last Guy") but Microsoft needs to get Japanese players USING XBLA constantly. So they should:

1. Give every Japanese purchaser a free 1 year subscription to XBL
2. Give every Japanese purchaser 500 free MS Points a month that expire if not used by the end of the month
3. CRANK out the most popular Japanese arcade games adding HD and online Multiplayer (which is why #1 is necessary)
4. Put out some virtual pet games that make use of XBL to let people check on their pets on their phones, but make them log into their 360 to actually do anything serious with their pets.

Basically, just create a positive Japanese social experience they can't get on the PS3 or Wii. The new console will probably also be a hit with Japanese as they love to customize everything much more than Westerners (and we like it too :)

Eh? Why do PS3 fanboys always choose the most expensive 360 plus the price of all of the accessories when comparing it to the PS3? There are people out there that just want a games console for offline play. £99 at Sainsburys gets them an Xbox 360 Arcade with wireless controller and 5 XBLA games. They can add any accessory at any point, but for £99 they're up and running.

As for the comparison, well a 60GB 360 with 1 game is currently £169.99 at GAME. With that you get a component cable capable of carrying a HD signal and a headset - 2 things you don't get with the PS3 which only comes with a composite cable. You also get the cable to connect the 360 to your router for online play and a free month of Live. A further 12+1 month Live card can be bought online for £25, so that's a system with a game, headset, HD cable, wireless controller, hard drive and 14 months of online play for less than £200.

If you want wireless - which you are not FORCED to buy for online play - you can buy the official 360 adapter from MS, a third party adapter, you can use homeplugs which can be bought cheaply on eBay, or if you have a laptop with wireless already you can use that to connect.

The 360 is WAY cheaper than the PS3.

Either way it goes the 360 is a much better cheaper console than the PS3, no one likes Blu-ray, no one likes the PSN, heck it's like the ghetto version of Xbox Live. The PS3 virtually has no appealing games that sets it apart other than MGS4 which has now blown over as past. Overall the 360 kciks butt on all fronts, fun games + cheap hardware + SUPERB online + Micro$oft'$ endless pocket$ = lasting etertainment and fun for all 360 users! The only ones backing the PS3 are the ones who were stooped into thinking it's actually worth the money it cost. A few good points.. but not everyone needs these features so a comparison like yours is useless. Many old school gamers don't play online and you can watch dvd even without HD-DVD drive which is useless now. Wireless isn't a must either. It comes down to ones personal preferences.

I wonder of the Xbox360 sales in Japan, how many different SKUs were sold. Im guessing maybe the arcade version sold the most. I can imagine citizens of Japan just buying the cheapest Arcade model (which is a very attractive price) just so they can play those few games MS got them attracted to. As well, I dont think online play is as big as it is here in NA so they dont care for all the HDD space or XBL stuff. Of course thats imo. It'd be nice if we had exact numbers of how many Xbox360 SKUs were sold. Also, does anybody know the amount of different Xbox360 SKUs sold in NA? I just want to know which SKU is the raking the most in these sales after the price cut.

kikzm33z comparison is perfectly valid, the XBOX360 is cheaper because it offers less (in terms of hardware) straight out the box, so he is simply showing that once you have bought all the additional addons for the xobx360 to bring it inline hardware wise it isnt all that cheap.

Now as another member has already pointed out not everyone needs those features and i would have to agree there too.

It's not really a fair comparison. The argument works both ways. The PS3 might have more things built in but you have no choice but to pay for them whether you want them or not.

For example, I don't need wireless for my 360, so if was built in it would no doubt make the console more expensive. I'd be paying more for an included feature that I don't need or want, but if I did want it I have several options that range from free up to £50 in order to get it.

I understand where you were coming from with this comparison of the two consoles but honestly you did go about it in the wrong manner. You got to realize that the world is very diverse. Not everyone makes the same kind of salary, enjoys online play, is interested in blue-ray movies(overpriced in my opinion), or prioritizes their lifestyle and values the same. I have seen people with big screen TV's , driving new cadillac's who would rather spend money on meaningless thing to me rather than move out of the projects. Me, i stay in a quiet neighborhood on the north side of town, drive a nissan titan (supercrewcab) and my wife a toyota sienna and choose not to pay rent. Point again everyone has diff values and that is our right. I do agree with you and most on one thing and that is the $50 per year for xboxlive but hey it is way better that PS3's online service. Microsoft gives better options. You can purchase a new nissan altima for $19,999 here in the US or add as many features as you choose and end up paying $30,000. Its all about options so is not fair to use the xbox elite, useless HDVD add-on, wireless adapter, and other crap, as a way to try and justify a comparison of the two consoles.

Honestly have to tip my hat to MGS4 and a few other PS3 titles but they still dont have enough elite titles to compete with the 360. I dont know how that asain guy keeps making games that good and graphically outshine everyone else. I guess he is the best at what he does; b/c the PS2 was said to be all out of juice then he made MGS3 and he pushed the ps2 farther than anyone else at that time(not to mention his ratings have been superb on MGS series for a long time) By the way i am in it for the cheapest console with the best selection of games and that is the xbox360. I don't think the price cut caused this spike. It's the release of Japan-oriented games: Tales of Vesperia and the announced Infinite Undiscovery and Star Ocean 4 are pushing 360 consoles in Japan, not the price cut. Japanese are less sensitive to price cuts than western consumers.

Second point, I DO believe the 360 is heavily overpriced. I own a Japanese Core 360 and a Japanese PS3 60GB and I got much better value for money from the PS3 than the 360. To bring the 360 on par with my PS3, I would have to buy:
- rechargeable pack for the controller
- Wifi unit
- 60GB hard disk
(- HDDVD unit to be completely on par)
If I buy all those overpriced addons, my 360 would be more costly than the PS3, not even taking into account the Live subscription.

So please, stop with the '360 is cheaper' argument. It just doesn't hold up. The game line-up is strong, but the price for the addons kills it in a hardware price comparison with the PS3.

Because of the overpriced wifi adapter, my 360 sits without Internet connection (as I refuse to pay so much for a wifi adapter) yet my PS3 is connected without a problem.

360 has a strong game line-up, but the hardware is lacking and overpriced.

LMAO.......Dude didnot you just read my post right before yours. If you want to try and bring your xbox360 up to par, its a free country and you have every right. WAKE UP CALL!!! The rest of the world and the ones who are in this for the games dont need all that extra crap. How would you feel if you ordered a hamburger and wanted to hold the tomatoes and the guy across the counter said, "Ummm.. No sir, we cant do that your going to have to eat them." Microsoft gave options to everyone. They didnot jack the price of their console up by shoving a Blueray player down my throat(that i may or may not want) and then kick me in my butt on the way out the door by giving me a short library of games and exclusives. RROD???? There is a warranty and a newer jasper model being released.

Options are what people need and what we like. Dont force us to buy something (blue-ray) if we dont really need it. Now lets check Blue-ray hasnt made the games any better gameplay wise has it. NOPE Nor has the cell proven yet to be what everyone says it is capable of b/c last i check the graphics were darn near identical, or comparable, on the exclusives for each consoles. Microsoft does offer HD cable and hdmi port with their consoles except for the $199 version. But then again that is an option i didnot have to have it was my choice to be able to play at 1080p right out of the box. The HDMI is not worth the extra money as the diff is not really noticeable. Glad i didnot spend extra on that too as i got one for free from a friend.

So now let me ask you this... Speaking of the Blue-ray and cell processor, "When exactly are you going to get your money's worth out of the extra you spent with all those extras on the PS3? And please dont say well i use the blue-ray player to watch movies b/c that is sad if that's all the feature is useful for on a VIDEO GAMING console.

Right now the jasper model still has no failure rate stats and is as much a selling point as the falcon model was this time last year. The falcon model also did little to fix MS's hardware oversight that still mutes it's japanese sales spikes. If you are expecting a better console from the jasper you should wait and make sure microsoft's track record is not upheld by the latest update (three years after launch).

If in fact it is all its cracked up to be, then I may even consider a 360 repurchase. I'm not holding my breath to deal with 18004myxbox over and over again, that warranty shit is not a selling point from my experience.

RROD???? There is a warranty and a newer jasper model being released.

Options are what people need and what we like. Dont force us to buy something (blue-ray) if we dont really need it. Now lets check Blue-ray hasnt made the games any better gameplay wise has it. NOPE Nor has the cell proven yet to be what everyone says it is capable of b/c last i check the graphics were darn near identical, or comparable, on the exclusives for each consoles. Microsoft does offer HD cable and hdmi port with their consoles except for the $199 version. But then again that is an option i didnot have to have it was my choice to be able to play at 1080p right out of the box. The HDMI is not worth the extra money as the diff is not really noticeable. Glad i didnot spend extra on that too as i got one for free from a friend.

So now let me ask you this... Speaking of the Blue-ray and cell processor, "When exactly are you going to get your money's worth out of the extra you spent with all those extras on the PS3? And please dont say well i use the blue-ray player to watch movies b/c that is sad if that's all the feature is useful for on a VIDEO GAMING console.

Addons & price: It's good to give consumer options. But the problem I have with the way Microsoft approaches hardware is dual:

1. Some of the 'options' you mention aren't as optional as you let us believe. Without wifi, I simply cannot go online as my router is too far from my consoles to run a wire through my entire house. Secondly, I won't go very far with just 20GB, especially if I want to buy DLC and/or use the update to install games completely to the HDD. So yes, it is a free country but still, a lot of those 'optional' addons are bare necessities for a lot of consumers.

2. OK, so we have 'optional' addons, but the problem is that these are severly overpriced. For approximately the same price as it would cost me to get a 60GB HDD for my 360, I could get a 250GB Western Digital HDD for my PS3. The wifi addon is also very costly

Put 1 & 2 together, and the combination of the not-so-optional nature of certain addons, coupled with their excessive price means that:
a) I can't play online with my 360
b) Even if I can go online, the number of DLC content I can download and install is limited due to HDD restrictions
c) My 360 can't function as a media player due to lack of online (no streaming) and lack of space (20GB HDD)

In that case, I personally would rather have a console that costs a little bit more but at least has everythign onboard that I will need.

RROD: indeed, there is a 3-year warranty but I buy consoles to be used long-term, meaning 5 years at least. What do I do once the 3-year warranty is over and I happen to get RROD then? Buy another console? And then another and another? The moment RROD surfaced, Microsoft should have addressed the issue by a recall, not by putting a patch on an open wound (because that's what extended warranties are: they leave the problem intact and only extend the guarantee. After the guarantee's over, you're on your own)

Blu-ray drive : I'll be the first to admit that this isn't the most essential part for a gaming console. But I'm a multi-media freak and am avidly collecting blu-rays. I can accept that for consumers like yourself who are only interested in gaming, this feels like a forced buy. For others, like me, it means we get 2 for the price of one: a blu-ray player and a console. There is no denying for people who are looking for a multimedia device that can play a wide range of codecs as well as DVD and Blu-ray, the PS3 is a good choice.

Like I said, I don't have a problem with the game lineup of the 360, but I do have a problem with the 'hidden costs' due to the absence of essential equipment as well as the lack of dealing with the RROD issue in a long-term vision fashion (instead of the extended warranty quick-fix)

So yes, better value for money from the PS3, without a doubt.

It's not really a fair comparison. The argument works both ways. The PS3 might have more things built in but you have no choice but to pay for them whether you want them or not.

For example, I don't need wireless for my 360, so if was built in it would no doubt make the console more expensive. I'd be paying more for an included feature that I don't need or want, but if I did want it I have several options that range from free up to £50 in order to get it.

I don't care if you have online or not. I am comparing them equally.
O - PS3 has built in WiFi. The 360 hasn't so that means the 360 is missing a feature compared to the PS3.

O - PS3's PSN is free. 360's is NOT so that is compared.

O - PS3 can watch movies, while 360 can't without an adapter so I compare with an adapter. Do you still not understand? If you don't, you're a thick person.

Which means I don't really give a sh** if you want online or not. Without wireless, Xbox Live or the DVD adapter then it's obvious that it will not be a fair comparison. The PS3 costs more than the 360 itself mostly because it has more built in features, whether you want them or not. UNDERSTAND?

Some good points. I will admit microsoft does mark everything up higher than it should be. I use my laptop to get online when i am not in my bedroom just b/c i dont feel the Wifi adapter is worth the a big face hundred. Point also noted with the upgrade in HD being costly as Microsoft has a hold on all in that area.

Hmmm, I thought this article would upset the $ony faithful.

I bought the 360 over the PS3 because of the line-up of games, plus I could play my backups on it.

People here may prefer wireless over cable- but I was happy to go cable because it's cheap and reliable (less data resends).

I bought a Falcon HDMI Arcade model, I can't see why they're a joke (???). I use 1080p and the Falcon chipset does have a better heatsink arrangement in it.

I bought a cheap 2nd hand HDD for it (20gig) into which I will pop a 120gig WD drive bought cheap as a Chrissy present to myself. 3rd party makers are coming out with cheaper HHD drives for the X360 anyway.

Batteries aren't a problem because I use high capacitance rechargeable NiMH AA pairs and a fast charger which I had in the house anyway. More than one thing uses them and I would be a fool to run out and buy batteries for them all the time.

If it really was an issue; consider that all consoles are a poor compromise in multi-media anyway. I built a cheap PC for the lounge, whacked a BluRay/HD-DVD drive in and weh-hey. Hardware decoding too! I can use my X360 controller, FF steering wheel and wireless headset with it via a cheap adapter. At the mo it just got a terabyte of raid in it; might add another couple in a year or so.

If you think that kikzm33z wrote a fair comparison of the value/choices available to console buyers. Then it doesn't bode well for the PS3 if it is the better one; since the Japanese are therefore purchasing the X360 on the basis of available games.

People forget how important the install base is to the health of the games scene. The size of the WII's ensures that it will enjoy wide support in the future, regardless that it doesn't offer great hardware choices. They were right in assessing that HD wasn't that important.

I will get one but I'm personally holding off on getting a PS3 until they get a better slew of elite exclusive games behind it- but it seems to be taking ages. Btw, if my old PS2 couldn't last 5yrs why would a PS3? they are not better made.

Not sure what you mean by the "rats"- unless it's an allusion to "...deserting a sinking ship".

That's not fair to those companies- who are obliged to make a profit for their shareholders. A quick search on Wikipedia for a list of games those companies have produced will show that over the years they have made games for all platforms including PC.

I know Sony bought a controlling share in Square Enix a few years back when they had financial troubles; forcing them to become exclusive for a while. Those shares have been bought back and they are no longer obliged to produce games for the PS only. Certainly the games they have produced for the X360 already (eg. Infinite Undiscovery) have not been hailed as great. It IS reported that FF XIII will come out in Europe and the US on the X360. Why not Japan? one can only speculate.
