Wii "is not hurting us" says Sony's Stringer

DVDBack23 @ Aug 29, 2008 19:31 | 67 comments

Sony CEO Howard Stringer was recently asked if the PlayStation 3 was suffering as a result of the Nintendo Wii's very strong sales but he said it was not despite the fact that Nintendo probably has the "superior business model".

"The Wii is a well-made device that has found a new target group. For a while, we held the same target group with the SingStar karaoke game. But perhaps we neglected to pursue that avenue," Stringer said. "PlayStation games are rather designed for those who play a lot. Although it's a different strategy, it pays off. We currently have a production bottleneck with the PlayStation 3."

"You also know, however, that our business model is not perfect, and that we make a loss on every console we sell," he confessed. "Nintendo makes money with the hardware alone, which may be a superior business model. But the Wii is not succeeding at our expense - it is not hurting us."

Stringer continued, "We are already making more money with the games than we are losing with the hardware."

In a funny confession, Stringer also admitted that it would take the company a very long time to recover the estimated $3 billion USD that it spent bringing the PS3 to the market.

"It will certainly take some time... We are currently at the stage in which we need to get a grip on the production costs. That takes time."

i finally got a PS3 for the first time. a used 60gb model for like 220 bux! awesome!!!

but it sucks! why do people get these things. i thought it would be cool to finally have one. but i dont even wanna play it. i guess u can say the real reason i got it was to play blu-ray movies.

the PS3 sucks. no support from 3rd party, and honestly even good japanese made games suck on it.

360 just is better. yeah u have to play to use online multiplayer. but its worth it. plus the XBL has more content.

the PSN has like 8 PS3 demo's. wow. lame. and u have to install them just to play them? no thanks.

i dont see how Sony PS3 fanboys can stick up for this system. even if it was as cheap as i paid for it. it would still suck! its a PS2 with a PSP dashboard plain and simple.

call me a xbox fanboy. but if sony didnt try to copy stuff from xbox, i wouldn't be blabbing right now *cough, trophies, cough*

I'm not sure what you are talking about, but the PS3 Blu-Ray player alone is enough to buy it from your point of view. How is the Blu-Ray player considered equal to the PS2 which uses dvd media.I agree they haven't released much yet for the PS3 in games, but the majority of games released are on both systems the PS3 and Xbox 360.I do see a couple exclusives on both systems, and you didn't even give input on the Wii which is the main arguement not the Xbox 360 which in all honesty I like as well. You gotta give props to the PS3 system for coming out with the Blu-Ray player already built in though, because all the other consoles don't support it.I know the Xbox 360 can store High Def content on its harddrive, but I don't see it having Blu-Ray media playback.

Right now, that is the big sell of the PS3, bluray. Now that HD-DVD is extinct though, prices for BluRay do seem to be falling, and given how ludicrously unreliable the copy protection system for BluRay is, you'd probably be better off using a PC to watch it as you can look up on the net why it won't work while you're at it... :P

Nintendo's gamble not to keep up with Sony and MS has paid off brilliantly for them, and I'm glad.

Lets go back to sells then shall we how much do you think it cost to build a Wii and how much do you think it cost to build a PS3 system.I'm sure you can figure out the reason now why the Wii sells more than the PS3.It sells because its cheap, but to compare it to the PS3 and the Xbox 360 doesn't make sense to me at all.Its completely different its like comparing the PS2 to the Wii which is what I was referring to.

Comment by: sammorris (Aug 30, 2008 16:35)

I agree with that, I don't think the two should be compared.

Why is the word fanboy being used constantly everytime people comment on an article discussion about consoles?

I think I'm gonna start posting questions everytime the word fanboy is used to understand it better. Its being used quite frequently and must be better than actually posting something useful. No offense canuckerz, but I'm almost positive you can contribute something better as in more thought to your post besides the fanboy comment.

uhg.....
lets make an example.....
Game market is made of about 45% causal gamers,30% hardcore(causal) gamers and 25% non gamers, non gamers are the full spectrum of people who buy a game and let it get dusty rarely buying more games?

With casual being the brunt of "gamers" guess who's buying the WII mofos?!?!!? And do not tell me if the WII was not there all that money displaced by it would not be going to the 360 or the PS3, there go its COMPETING!!!!!!!!

Just because you dislike the WII and do not think its worthy of your time dose not misplace the fact that it is competing because the brunt of WIIs market say 50-70% would be spending money on either a 360 or a PS3 if the WII was not there, to say it's not competing is a fallacy of the gleeful fanboy.

Now I will give you it's not directly competing for neck and neck placement in the industry but... it dose not have to it is making such a profit normal rules do not apply simply remove the WII from the market you have millions if not billions that would be spent world wide for the other game systems, because of this fact it is competing.

What is classed as being next gen? upgraded hardware or something revolutionary which hasn't been done before?

The Wii's control system is the only thing that I have seen that makes the Wii next gen. So what if it doesn't have a billion ghz processor? or a 40gb harddrive?
The xbox 360 and the PS3 have had added hardware revisions from their predecessors (ps2, xbox), and things that have been added to the latest consoles, have already been possible on PC'S for years (Storage, online play etc..) so that's nothing new in terms of gameplay. Blu-ray is a bit of an exception, but to be honest it's no where near mainstream, same with HD, in the UK at least..were still on analogue here. You can get blu-ray players for PC, although not cheap it's not really important at this moment in time because it isn't the norm.
So we've seen things that have already been around in the new systems on PC's for a fair while yet we've not seen anything as complete as the Wii's remote system which actually provides a completely different idea of gameplay...remember games consoles were originally thought up so you could play games at home? So all you bloody annoying PS3/xbox fanboys get over yourself. your systems are just upgrades and stop being pissy about the Wii's success. Who cares if it is just basically a gamecube in a suit. Hardware is really not everything you know...and it certainly doesn't make a console next gen, if its using hardware which has already been around..

Next gen is whatever the hell they are doing now.
its a misnomer or popularized saying like nazi and fanboy I think.

I should mention this as well most kids play videogames. The younger they are the less money they have. The majority of sells for game consoles originates from kids.I don't know what the ratio is,but yeah kids make up the sells. If I was a parent I wouldn't want to spend the money for a PS3 instead I would buy a Wii for my kid.Its not next gen and I classify it in its own category. To say the Wii hasn't been revised when Nintendo has been around longer than the other game industries is false information.Lets be honest with each other I don't see kids walking around with enough money to spend on a PS3 or an Xbox 360.They mainly rely on their parents to spend the money, and its true a parent is not going to spend the kind of money needed to produce a next gen console. It might not be next gen,but it is cheap and this is the marketing scheme Nintendo used for this console.I admit I'm not crazy about the Wii,but considering how much money it takes to make the Xbox 360 and the PS3 they can't compete in the price range as the Wii without losing profit. When we talk about sells profit plays a big role wouldn't you agree.I don't think MS and Sony are making profit, because they are already marketing their system for less when it takes more money to produce the consoles they make.

and I thought I was a game nazi, then WOW must not be next gen because its not "pretty" enough, BALLCOCKS!

Next gen is whatever they are doing N O W,I will admit the more pretty the more next gen it is, however pretty alone dose not make or break it. And before you diss the WII more try looking up Conduit its gunning for 360 graphics albeit year 1 360graphics but still LOL

Next gen is short for next generation I compare it through hardware. If you look at most game sites they classify consoles in categories first generation, second generation, third generation, next generation etc...Nintendo,Sony,and MS have multiple consoles made that differ by generation. The word nazi and fanboy are smart ass remarks that don't mean jack.

Depending on the context there of ..."don't mean jack"....don't mean sht.=^^=

There are 7 generations of consoles, Next gen generally refers to whatever is most "hip" in the current generation referring to not only what is coming but what is current and oh so popular, if you can't read in between my drunken liens of text popular=pretty *kisshugluff*.

For all the console/game fanboys out their.

How long did the PS One sell after the PS2 came out? How long did the PS2 sell after the 360 came out? Not everybody buys next gen consoles, not everybody wants them.

Comment by: L-Burna (Aug 31, 2008 15:18)

It means more than that I think ZippyDSM as in it can be used for next generation of people. Not necessarily current, but for the future as well.I agree with that statement sammorris not everyone buys a console set for the future.

L-Burna see if you don't like, your going to diss it no matter the facts.

the Wii is innovative, and has majority in market sales.

I wouldn't call it innovative, but I agree it is popular and is leading in console sells.Nintendo is more likely to do a console revision before the PS3 and Xbox 360.I've already gave my input on the subject even if some of you dislike what I said. You can pull out what you like and dislike, but the fact is anything said that degrades this console is unacceptable from most of you.

I'm just tired of people making their own mini flames in every news article. What other word could I use to describe someone who posts how much the ps3 sucks and how the 360 is so much better when the article is about the interface between nintendo and sony's market. And my fanboy comment was towards doomlight in this case, just so you dont think I ment it towards you somehow.

And imo the reason Sony isn't worried about the wii is because their target audiences are almost entirely different which I'm sure as been said before although more elaborately. Nintendo just has a bigger however different target audience.

Comment by: L-Burna (Aug 31, 2008 17:05)

Thanks canuckerz that sounded alot better than the last post.I'm sure you catch my drift with the fanboy word it seems like a cop out instead of actually posting something useful.I wasn't trying to put you down or anything, but using words like fanboy or nazi are as ZippyDSM said don't mean sht.=^^=

The more you can elaborate the better I think, because using these type of words for a broad meaning doesn't always catch.

Although this is barely relevant to this article, I'm not so sure on Nintendo being the first to revamp their console. The 360 came out first this gen, and 9GB DVDs are getting a bit small for some games now. I wouldn't be surprised if something has to be done about that within the not-so-near future.

That is true, but you also forgot to mention the update that will enable games to run off the harddrive for the Xbox 360.I think it won't be long until multiple disc games are released, and installed on the harddrive. We will have to wait and see for the Xbox 360,but for Nintendo there is no work around unless the hardware is updated.

The HDDs provided with the consoles just aren't big enough for that though, especially the earlier ones, so if everybody has to buy a new HDD to pull that off I can't see it being too successful.

Its cheaper to buy a new HDD rather than a new console though, and this is a problem with Nintendo. You would have to buy a new console if Nintendo fixed the storage issue and made it High Def.

But they won't. Nintendo don't need high-def graphics, and can make use of SD cards, which is enough.

Apparently SD is not enough in one of the news articles off here Nintendo admits storage is an issue and all the channels can't be filled up.Here is the link to the article http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/14908.cfm about the storage issue.
