Sony PSP Go!Messenger finally arrives

DVDBack23 @ Feb 27, 2008 23:46 | 16 comments

After it announced in mid-January that Skype would be heading to European PSPs, Sony has confirmed that the wireless communication package Go!Messenger will also hit European PSPs by the end of the week.

The package, jointly developed by Sony and BT lets users "send voice, video and instant messages to other Go!Messenger users from any wireless Internet connection, and will work over wireless Internet - including that provided by the 2,500-plus BT Openzone hotspots around UK city centers."

The service is free in theory but you will need to purchase the PSP Go!Cam, which is a mic and video camera, if you want to use the package.

"Enabling more than 8.5 Million PSP users across the SCEE region to communicate with each other, through Video or Voice chat, truly confirms the always evolving nature and potential of PSP," said PSP European marketing manager Stephane Hareau.

I know that the voip was slim only, but is Go!Messenger slim only as well?

Ahh... I see how it is... You can't make me buy a slim!

Well, one from North America... All we get is the crap. All of the coolest PSPs are Japan only, like the MGS Ed. one and the FF one too >:

Slim & Lite users have the benefit of SKYPE and GOMSG
PHAT users only have GOMSG

No, there Was an Artical I read someware that stated the Custom Firmware Fat PSP could use skype, and this service.

its probaly another one of Sony's Bad Marketing Schemes

Sony PlayStation Portable owners looking to get more out of their PSPs, rejoice! The highly-anticipated official firmware from Sony, PSP Firmware 3.90, is now out, and with it comes the feature to use Skype. Yes, that Skype, the one that lets you talk over the internet free. Awesome!

So, just what sort of services from Skype are we talking about? Communication over the internet, as well as on mobile phones, baby! Of course, while talking to your Skype buddies is completely free, other types of calls need some moolah to happen. Below is a list of services that you can use upon installing PSP Firmware 3.90 on your Slim & Lite:

* Outgoing calls between Skype ID (Skype ID) (free)
* General and the outgoing phone calls (dialer, SkypeOut ™) (paid)
* General mobile phones in the phone (Phone receiving, SkypeIn ™) (paid)
* Voice mail exchanges (some paid)

Besides some online dough, you'll also have to abide by certain conditions to use Skype. The list of requirements, again verbatim:

* PSP ® console (PSP-2000 series)
* Memory Stick Duo ™ (capacity needs at least 1MB)
* Wireless Internet access environment
* PSP ® Skype to respond to the voice input and output devices
* Earphones attached remote control (PSP S140 G-G-270) + headset (PSP).
* 1 headset connected to the remote system to connect to the PSP.

Tough luck for PSP-1000 model owners, then - but definitely a huge bonus for those of us who upgraded to the Slim & Lite. So go on ahead and fire up those Network Updates!

Unless they come up with a headset that works with phat audio socket or usb then it wont happen...

my fat psp came with a headset as part of the bundle when it first came out, and uses the Pins to the right hand side of the Headphone Jack.

Comment by: Sudds (Feb 29, 2008 13:18)

Headphones?
The jack doesnt have the facilitys for skype otherwise it would have been released for the phat psp at the same time it was for the slim.

Comment by: DXR88 (Feb 29, 2008 15:13)

i think it has more to do with the memory range of the slim than it does the connectors. Only four more Pins were added to the side of the slim and that was for video interconnectivity.

Comment by: Sudds (Feb 29, 2008 15:55)

Am waitin for tne wifes psp to charge to upgrade it to see if skype is on it.
I traded my old one for the slim whenever it first came out.
It would be abit hateful if phat users couldnt access skype.

Comment by: Sudds (Feb 29, 2008 17:39)

Well did the phat upgrade, now running 3:90 M33-2 and just as i thought no SKYPE...

Not exactly skpe but serves the same function still in early dev. though, you should try it (Furikup PSP SIP Phone v0.1)

Comment by: Sudds (Feb 29, 2008 23:27)

Nice!
But i cant see why they left out SKYPE in the phat.
GOMSGNER is basicly very similar with voice chat etc, but as you said maybe its because of the lack of memory in the phat.

Im willing to try this Furikup and already have the program, but before I install it onto my phat, where does one subscribe? What Voip company does one use for that? I cant seem to find anything on the web.

Although this is a great new inovation i just do not see the point when we live in a world that already has mobile phones and pda's and things like this already exist. Is this product supposed to attract the younger youthful generation?

Whats better than a free call around the world, Skype is dirt cheap and depending on were you live free. What more do you want
