Sony sells 120 millionth PlayStation 2 unitDVDBack23 @ Oct 26, 2007 22:03 | 27 comments
The company also said it had no plans to stop development for the PS2 until 2010 despite claims that the console was cannibalizing PlayStation 3 sales.
160 new games are expected for the system though March 2008 including "Guitar Hero 3", "Manhunt 2" and "Madden NFL 08" all of which should be huge hits. Additionally, Sony says it will be releasing a Ceramic White PS2 model bundled with "Singstar Pop" and two microphones for $149.99 USD.
"We look forward to the platform's continued growth and expect to sell approximately 12 million units worldwide by the end of March, leading us to anticipate that PlayStation 2's life cycle will exceed that of the original PlayStation," SCEA president and CEO Jack Tretton said in the announcement.
See you in 2010 PlayStation 2.

Comment by: Saber9 (Oct 26, 2007 22:46) Madden 08 is already out. I guess it could last until 2010 since it is still outselling the PS3. Imagine if it outlasts the Xbox360 too after already leaving the original Xbox in the dust. |
Comment by: Pop_Smith (Oct 26, 2007 22:48) If they are continuing to develop games for the PS2 thats good news. It shows how much of a solid system it is. For once its nice to see a company actually (semi) listen to its audience and say "This thing is selling really well, even though we could drop it its selling well we should continue to make it".

Comment by: BIGnewb (Oct 27, 2007 00:17) Playstation 2 will stop selling in 2010.Because the game line=up is still strong and then will drop the price gradually by 10 dollars every once in a while.by the time they sell all the ones already produced, yes i'll agree with 2010 being the year.CONGRATS SONY ON THE BEST CONSOLE EVER RELEASED! |
Comment by: Riotard (Oct 27, 2007 00:28) It'll stop being bought, when second tier developers are able to produce games for the next gen, and make profits, because it costs hardly anything to make for a ps2, but loads for a 360 or wii game, and a ps3 games just costs too much they make for 360 and prot.

Comment by: chaos_zzz (Oct 27, 2007 05:20) my ps2 30000 is still working fine no problems at all and after a years of gaming, not like the 360 wich is suppoused to be better and there are ppl on their fifth or sixth 360 that's why i always trust sony they rearely let u down when it comes about being strong. |

Comment by: u2konline (Oct 27, 2007 06:05) Thats good to hear, but i'm a hardcore sega fan, and i think the dreamcast could of had the same success if the saturn never failed. It would be dreamcast vs psx2 still going on, thats a shame.

Comment by: rainofire (Oct 27, 2007 11:26) Quote: If you think that is how the PS2 got that many consoles sold, then should we also apply that to the 360? |
Comment by: vinny13 (Oct 27, 2007 15:51) Ya I bet that the 360 count would be at like 8 million if they didn't count people who bought one more then once... I know one guy who went through 4 in 2 months! The last one is still going strong, but he says that the disc drive is messed and it doesn't stop his games from spinning when he opens the tray. His games are in pretty rough shape because of that... |
Comment by: pryme_H (Oct 27, 2007 16:47) This is great news for PS2 Gamers like myself! ![]() We lie! We cheat! We steal! |
Comment by: ChromeMud (Oct 27, 2007 17:25) Looks like the PS2 will last until the Next-Next Gen.

Comment by: vinny13 (Oct 27, 2007 20:53) Sony doesn't care about BWC anymore because everyone who buys a PS3 most likely has a PS2 and maybe even a PS1. ![]() There is no present. We all live in the past and are catching up to our future. |
Comment by: 7thsinger (Oct 27, 2007 23:51) Mad props to Sony! I know my PS2 is still my console of choice. And just to put this out there...

Comment by: weird0 (Oct 28, 2007 00:45) do they even make money off the games anymore

Comment by: japhy (Oct 28, 2007 01:12) Had my PS2 since 2002 sold it to a friend for some PS3 money. I can't imagine many consoles that did not have moving parts not still working. My old Genesis does and so does my Atari 2800 (although I don't have a TV that it will play on)

Comment by: WierdName (Oct 28, 2007 03:40) Eat that Xbox fanboys. I don't see any/much original Xboxs on display in stores anymore...

Comment by: gozilla (Oct 28, 2007 06:09) Quote: that's because microsoft did the (silly/smart) thing by removing the xbox from production as soon as the 360 hit the shelves.

Comment by: BIGnewb (Oct 29, 2007 20:24) actually xbox didnt have success at all.ps2 fully pwnd it.the dvd add-on was a failure and still is till this day.the game library was much bigger for ps2 than gamecube and xbox.the controllerss were horrible.the online wasnt free.yea successful doesnt fit in here anywhere. |
Comment by: jacsac (Oct 29, 2007 21:11) My slim ps2 sucks. It makes a funky noise sometimes. I still use my launch ps2 as a dvd player 4-5 days a week and the kids play it 3 or 4 times a week without a problem. In the socom 1&2 days it barely got a rest. |
Comment by: borhan9 (Nov 01, 2007 07:00) Quote: I was contemplating selling my ps2 but after reading this i may keep it. Or i could sell it at a higher price than i was going to sell it for. |
