Microsoft has bold expectations for Halo 3

DVDBack23 @ Aug 14, 2007 20:12 | 54 comments

Microsoft marketing boss Chris Di Cesare has made some bold statements about the much hyped, upcoming game Halo 3 saying that he believes the game can sell more in one day then the top box office films have made in their opening weekends.

He said the target for the first day of sales was 155 million USD which would beat out the 151 million opening weekend of Spider-Man 3.

"When we opened to USD 125 million [last time], that really caught a lot of people's attention. It showed that videogames were no longer that thing that kids play in their basement," Chris Di Cesare said. "We're confident we can do better."

Di Cesare does concede that the comparison isn't entirely fair due to the high prices of Xbox 360 games as compared to a movie ticket, but still says the figures are too large to ignore.

"I recognize it's not apples to apples. But it's big business any way you cut it," added Di Cesare.

Microsoft recently announced that they had over 1 million pre-orders for the game in the US, and the advertising push for the game has been huge prompting many to believe that the game will shatter even the highest expectations.

I think the motion sickness is related to the GFX engine they used in those game. I get like that two but only about an hour into the game. is it motion sickness or are those games so bad it makes you want to puke. MMM i wonder.

Halo dose not "suck" its jsut a above average FPS,if the fanboys wouldn't make it up as the 2nd coming we'd all be better off.

I have played 1 on PC and playing 2 now on PC (XP that is :P) its still a pretty above average FPS.

Now on the Xbox halo is thusly mediocre I had much more fun with turok back in the day,but on the PC halo is enjoyable.

Yeah. As an avid Halo 1 player and a decent Halo 2 player, some of this hype is a bit overplayed, although, Halo is one of the better games I've played in terms of the FPS genre. I honestly hate Halo 1 or 2 on the Xbox, but they are so much more better when they are on the PC.

I enjoy them because most of the time you get away with things you wouldn't be able to do as a normal environment would allow. So what if it's not realistic? It's a fun game once you get into it.

I'm personally looking forward to Halo 3 because from the looks of things, they brought all the functionality of Halo 1, some of the better concepts of Halo 2 (although not much :P), and the custom attributes applied first to Halo Custom Edition (which is what I play mainly due to the custom maps and weapons).

So, even if someone else enjoys Battlefield 2 or CSS better, I found my own personal niche with Halo... But I'm surely not going to buy a 360 just to play it :P Bungie, take back your game and bring it to the Mac's and PC's first!!

Bungie is MSs bitch so they cant do much of anything since MS owns them.

I wish they would improve on the gameplay,I would like not to drop my dual wiled when I toss a grenade just lower the weapon and toss it and other gameplay tweaks,a solid inventory system like on far cry or what not to manage your weapons would be nice the glitch like weapon management on 2 is kinda a joke...

Halo is a mediocore FPS ,it sucks compared the ebst FPS's.

my quote
"well Halo sucks compared to every other FPS on the PC so meh"

Let me make thigns more confusing On the Xbox Halo is jsut another annoying console FPS(thus it sucks),on the PC its a solid above average but not great FPS.

So it can suck, but on the PC its suck factor is not that bad :P

LOL
really tho if anythign its highly over rated, and the voices in my head talk so much I got myself confused :P

BTW zippykitty has not been on his meds I had a 20 posting fit over bioshock using steam as its copy protection (I hate steam with every fiber of my being) only to find out that retail uses its own stuff D2D has its own and steam uses steam for protection.

Zippy gets his ass handed to him by his own shadow a lot :P

Well Halo has a few thigns I like level design and gameplay, the AI is smart enough and can be down right funny, thos lil bastards are a riot,I really enjoyed 1 on the PC it was good and fun, altho there are some tweaking balancing issues that need to be dealt with,I loved the indestructible vehicles I was not to happy with the the carry limit.

Halo 2 is weak...

Have you played farcry?

I wish they would make a Carry system that lights you hold 6 light weapons,4 medium or 2 heavy, this why I can hold onto 3 or 4 weapons and not be forced to hold acuple,I found that so strange when the MC is a freaking cyborg yet his melee hits are puny and he cant dual wield a shotgun...

The next thing u will hear about this game is that they will make it in to a movie and it will be as lousy as DOOM was.

Comment by: Engtech (Aug 18, 2007 10:18)

Can some one tell me why they decided not to make Halo 3 for the first Xbox? Thats not right for the people who invested in the first two games but dont own a Xbox 360. Give me a watered down version and I would be happy.

I cannot explain it much more than that. Only a few games do this to me. Pariah and UT Championship as well.
Its almost like i need to take a gravel before playing. I don't even bother with those. It has something to do with the way you move thru the levels. I know someone else who gets ill over watching that game as well. Game looks good, its just i cannot watch it.

Funny thing is...games like this on a PC are okay. UT 2004 is fine. Farcry is fine. Its only on the console. Definetely related to motion sickness. Like sitting on a sailboat in the cabin.

Just curious...does this happen to many others ?

I don't get motion sickness, but playing it for to long does give me a terrible headache. I have Halo on PC and I like the graphics and what not, but the game itself is kind of lame. If there was no multi-player like there was 10 years ago when the original Doom and Quake came out, this game wouldn't have sold jack.

Comment by: DXR88 (Aug 18, 2007 14:17)

um doom did have a multiplay lan based system. not internet based. so did quak . lan port on doom 1&2 TNT&plutonium was set to 666 ironic is it not. sorry modderators for the ultra off topic subject

DOOM-QUAKE and HALO all use adventure class level design,Quake 2 even more so you can't really dis Halo over most of tis designs you can rail on it with the limited/annoying weapon carry rule it has.

But the MP side pretty much made halo, altho the SP side is not half bad, what halo needs to be prefect is more variety in monsters/things to shoot and weapons I would like to have more control over what he carries (like more than 2 things less than 5 let me chose what he can carry and use with soem forum of quick customizeable inventory thing).....and of coarse more options in control and button mapping.

Somewhat,I ahve a friend who can play most FPSs but the 007/time splitters engine gives him motion sickness I think its due to the wobble effect.

it all depends on what the "brain" sees and can process.

I would like to see in halo more areas to get too inside each map,an example as to what i'm saying is without using cheats or the plasma jump etc,in the courtyard when those two big mongrels with the shields break thru the doors near the beginning of the game when chiefy is in that transport crash, once you're thru it is possable to jump up to the roof tops, basicly stuff like that to flank or suprise the enemy,as for the AI they are just barely average in their action when shot at and need some major work in that area, graphics wise can't imagine what the improvements on the 360 will be it's pretty stunning just on the ol' xpox 1,ZIPPY you're right about the grenade throw crap and droping the weapon is dam gaye & definatley carry more weapons & being able to carry a dam sight more plasma's i love those things they ought to be in every fps game...lol..

EDIT: Forgot to mention i really like the ability to throw grenades without the usual gaye arch line i find it easy to gauge distance at which to throw.

MMmmmmmm
Ok heres my thought on how Halo should be

first off you get 7 slots to stow crap in,grenades take up a slot (4-6X each, over 12 your a walking grenade and explosions can set your grenades off say 40% to set im off at 12-16 16+ its 60% but WTH your carrying 20+ grenades :P ) light weapons (pistol,E pistol,Machine gun) take up 1 slot each medium (Needle, scoped auto rifle, plasma rifle, energy rifle) take up 2 a slot the heavier weapons take up 3 each you can use the final slot for either more ammo or have some grenades on hand.

Now you can chose to streamline this in the menu and have extra weapons automatically fill the thier counter parts (IE if you have 3 plasma rifles you can chose to cycle to the next or have it drop the used one this can be used for dual wiled of course) for human weapons you simple get more ammo or you may dual wiled of corse.

heres the kicker in order to make this faster for Multiplay you get a menu when you go into the config screen you can setup it to automatically pick up/drop/sort/proportize by toggling what you like more, this can also be used to automatically pick up energy based weapons that have more ammo in them.

I like Halos designs on the weapons for the most part its the delivery that could use work.

I like GOW arch line however when it comes to thos things it should be gamers choice not a fcking default...but I think tis due to low attention span players and overly short games they want people to have a easier time playing it or something.

you get a limit of 4 or so each but frankly I would rather have the option of choosing which of the 2 types to have 12 of ya know? if I want to carry 2 energy and 8 frags why not >> (can you tell I like teh grenades?)

Comment by: Rikoshay (Aug 19, 2007 20:08)

Sorry, but personally I enjoy it just the way it is. Carrying all those weapons would make it too inconvenient to switch back and forth between wepons. 4 of each grenade is enough if you know what you're doing with them. Plus it makes it a bit more realistic to drop a weapon during a dual wield to throw a grenade. What you're asking for is more like Half-Life deathmatch or something. The game works fine as it is; it's simple, fast-paced and easy to grasp. Making it more complicated isn't going to make it a better game.

thats why you set the inventory system up first, tis akin to selectable weapons at the start of map on UC or some MP games, you throttle up or down what you want and it deals with everything you can just go about fooling with the basic things,I for one hate the over simplified dual wiled setup and hate that you drop a wepaon to toss a grenade.

An inventory system is not such a bad ieda when you can preset it or customize it to your play style, but I would take simple tweaks over it

1.Frist off I can carry any 4 of any dual wiled I want, and be able to not drop them when I toss a grenade just delay the toss and the weapon being readied(hit the toss grenade button you lower the weapon quickly then toss the grenade then bring the weapon back up you can freely use the other weapon during this).

2.2nd make it where you hold 8-12 grenades in total so on thos single grnade maps you can have a normal ammo count of 1 type of grenades.

and a few other basic tweaks

Hmm... You explained it a lot better the second time around. It would be a bit more convenient to just lower the response time when throwing a grenade when dual wielding. I just remembered that switching between dual-wields and another weapon doesn't work, you still drop a weapon, so they should work on fixing that.

I agree it would be nice to hold more than 4 of each grenade in the Single Player, but still I think 4 of each online is more than enough. People spam too many nades as it is online, and adding anymore would just be overkill.

Zippy always makes more sense the 3rd or 4th time around :P

I loved Halo 1 it just hit on all cylinders ya know sure it might could use more polish and a energy cannon(it was in the enemy ranks near the end but you could not get it) but I just love SP game and some of the indestructible vechiles it was like playing int eh sane box when I was 6 or 8 with my army vehicles, Halo 2 just killed the uniqueness Halo 1 had and the lack of polish on what it did have was madding.

And then adding to that last bit add a preset setup where you can layout your top 3 weapon configs so the most you would have to do is pick up a weapon and it was be ready to rock, basically if you have a single or dual wiled weapon your "2ndy" weapons would go to where ever you pick and by pressing a couple buttons at once you can switch between the presets.

Well, from what I've seen in the Beta, and from what I heard from people who have played the Beta (and these are people I play with often in Halo Custom Edition), is that they fixed the broken aspects that were in Halo 2, and that they go so far to say that it's even better than Halo 1. From what I've seen, it seems like it just might be. In fact, if there ever was a reason for me to get a 360, it would be for this game. :D

I know I'm contradicting myself a bit from what I said earlier, but frankly I just can't wait 3 more years to play it on the PC. I need it NAO! :D

Therefore, although it seems a bit over the top, to some people this game fulfills what was set up in Halo 1. I also heard that they reduced the graphics in the multi player mode for more performance, but they added all the nice special effects to the single player mode. But, time will tell how well the final product will be executed.
