Best Buy to discontinue carrying Xbox 360 Core package

DVDBack23 @ Aug 01, 2007 20:10 | 20 comments

According to Joystiq, the large electronics retailer Best Buy has effectively discontinued offering the Xbox 360 Core package.

An internal Best Buy document confirms the discontinuation by clearly showing the Core system as having a new status of "Deleted" and having a "pref code: y" which signifies that “replenishment of this item is not expected.”

Microsoft representatives denied the reports however, saying the "Xbox 360 Core remains an important member of the Xbox 360 family.”

Recently, Sony dropped the 20GB model of its PlayStation 3 so Microsoft dropping the lesser Core model would not be unheard of. It is not clear whether the decision is exclusive to Best Buy, but we will keep you updated on any developments.

Vanila66 and 26r0ck, when the hell has sony got it right with the ps3, i think states show the 360 is winning agaisnt it, M$ have got it right(well they've got it better than Sony), Sony haven't got it right at all, they ahve compeltly got it wrong!

Persoanlly i think they shoudln't pull the Core off, because it offers low market consumers the chance to buy the product, adn gives the chance to challenge the wii wii!

Wow, everyones showing their levels of maturity here aren't they?

I'm surprised that it took them this long to drop the Core, it should have happened ages ago IMO. If anything I would say MS have already stopped making them and are just selling the last of their stock.

the core unit would be a great buy at 200 even but at 280 it might collect more dust than some retailers care to have.

Halo was actually a MAC ONLY game! But then Microsoft bought it out, mad it for their PCs, and then put it on the Xbox. Infact Microsoft has been copying Mac for years and years, and even in an old youtube clip I came across, it shows Bill Gates praising Mac at what looks like a Press Conference or something.

Although I think it is only for PPC Macs or whatever, there is little lag, so I'm happy. I think that's pretty good for a non-universal game.

Last I checked it was a MAC/PC game and was delayed to end for the PC then cannded until MS was ready to stop mooching off its Xbox success and release it for the PC.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halo:_Combat_Evolved#Development

MS stole is as quick as they could to make it theirs only, and set the foundation oft eh Xbox a PC stealing console, but then its hard to blame everythign has been washed to the mainstream and consoles are very "mainstream".

MS did copy macs and then mac tried to copy windows and now windows its copying mac its a sad cycle...pick what works improve it move on.....

Vista is looking to be a middle os with a new one on its way in 3 years,I hope its just a new 200X.

A final note, even without halo being Xbox only the Xbox had the makings of a solid system I believe the Xbox did as well as the GC even if it was lower in sales than the GC it would have still doen realtivly well..

lol...fanboys are entertaining. I haven't argued over which console sucks more since I was 11. Back then it was Mario Vs. Sonic.

I am going over a bit more than "what sucks or not", I am going over the reasons why one will have a delay in its game line up,the reasons to why they sale badly in some areas, the reason why one will wont get anywhere on a world wide scale until it breaks into certain markets, I am going over a bit more fact than fiction, really if you guys want to burn the fanboy card over a bit of fact look in the mirror before you cry foul.

This is nothing special at all.

There is one slight difference between the 360 core package and the 20GB PS3..

The core 360 is identical to it's bigger brothers, in that it can be upgraded to their spec, unlike the 20GB PS3.. therefore it's unlikely that MS will halt discontinue the core system, as it's got to be in production for the 'standard' 360.. Sony, on the other hand, were manufacturing two machines of different specs, so halting production of one would save them money.

Not really they were going to make wifi and card reader add ons but went ahead and caned that.

I think tis a smart move tho they need to focus on the premium lower its price raise its specs the elite they can leave at 500,its the premium that is their backbone.

I guess you haven't heard of Final Fantasy 7. It was released in 1997, Metal Gear Solid was released in 1998. So technically if Final Fantasy had stayed with Nintendo then Sony would not have done as well, not thanks to Metal Gear. Metal Gear shipped 6 million copies, Final Fantasy sold 9.5 million.

Yes, xbox would have sucked without Halo, but Microsoft bought Bungie and they do have Halo, so there is no point in arguing over that. Doesn't matter weather or not Bungie originally designed it for something else because Microsoft had the foresight to turn it into a first person shooter, which last I checked, was a good decision.

....it was a FPS for mac and PC......
But it would be interesting to see the outcome of no Halo on the Xbox and I can only think of 30% less sales hardly a system killer.

Same for MSG 1 and FF7 without them the PSX would still be a solid system.

it takes a bit more than 1 or 2 games to kill a system,at the same time it helps to have more than that to show you have more to offer than 1 or 2 games *L*.

Meh i'll only be buying the Core when I get the chance, I can see why people in the US can't be bothered when it isn't much to get a Premium but the Core alone here is £195 or $400!

Still, one has to consider that the entry price point for a console is vastly greater than those of the SNES / Genesis / NES / Master System days.

There are a lot of gamers that grew up on these systems and still have the mentality that any price beyond X dollars is too much. Remember the 3D0 and the Neo Geo?
