Sony PS3 to have exclusive rights to new Rockstar Games titleDVDBack23 @ Jul 30, 2007 20:13 | 35 comments Sony third party relations cheif Michael Shorrock has said that the company has purchased exclusive rights for the next game franchise by Rockstar Games, makers of the popular Grand Theft Auto and Manhunt series among many others.
According to Shorrock, a "completely new" franchise will be launched exclusive to the PlayStation 3 which should help Sony regain some credibility after losing out on a deal that placed exclusive GTA: IV content on the rival Xbox 360.
"Everyone knows to have success in this business you need to look ahead, identifying the talent and titles that are going to give consumers new kinds of gaming experiences that help set the bar for the rest of the industry," Shorrock said. "Rockstar has a heritage for doing just that."
Sony also said the game would make "heavy use of the PlayStation 3's Cell and Blu-ray technologies" but could not disclose more due to a non-disclosure agreement made with Rockstar.
JupiterResearch senior analyst Michael Gartenberg did mention that there may be more to the deal then what is known now.
"There's one interesting part of this," he said. "No one does exclusives without a really good reason and given the fact that Sony is not dominating this console cycle, I would think Sony must have paid quite a bit to get the exclusivity."

Comment by: spydah (Jul 30, 2007 22:37) Lovely response DVDback. I cant wait until this comes out and at this point it dont matter what system its on as long as it looks good and they keep the quality of the game that made it fun in the first place. Thats what people keep forgetting. |
Comment by: themind (Jul 31, 2007 00:02) Hey this artical is like sony saying that rumble is last gen. I own all three and I'm not a fanboy, but sony has been pissing me off for over five years now. |

Comment by: Ballpyhon (Jul 31, 2007 02:34) the main reason that Rockstar is not staying exclusive to the PS3 and is releasing to the 360 as well as the PS3 this time is simply that the 360 is, well...doing 360s around the PS3. Sure you may have to pay roughly $4.50 a month for XBLive, but don't you still have to pay for the internet connection with the PS3? I think i will cough up the extra $4.50 a month for XBlive and be able to actually talk to other players during games, instead of having to stop playing only to type on a half ass ghetto keyboard. its almost like comparing a standard TV to a HDTV. sure a Standard TV gets the job done, but the HDTV is far superior and you will enjoy it more. not to mention, 360s are cheaper, and they sell better. for those of you who say that they are crap, just remember, if you have a PS3 i still wont be able to hear you. |
Comment by: borhan9 (Jul 31, 2007 03:58) I would have thought the PS3 had already had the rights to the GTA series. |

Comment by: defcheck (Jul 31, 2007 15:09) Not a big deal they do this alot if you think about it..For example (Soul Calibor 3) I think that's the game which had exclusive content for each system Xbox,PS2,Gamecube Each one had there own fighter for there brand like gamecube was link ps2 was a tekken guy and xbox was spawn...More hype then quality if you ask me..I want these systems to start getting close in ranks and sales then maybe we'll start getting more games and better exclusives so were all happy... |
Comment by: Vondoom (Jul 31, 2007 19:00) I say good job for sony picking this up. Since M$ dumped 50 million on the exclusive content for GTA IV. I wonder if you can download it for free? Nah it will be 800 M$ points per package.Gee whiz what a deal roughly 10.00 a pop on top of monthy fee.

Comment by: Fenix88 (Aug 01, 2007 10:29) Why is it that you think games do not need to be on blu ray or hd dvd? With hd content whether it be games or movies they need more room than what todays dvds can support. Not only on the video side but the audio side as well. Games are becoming more and more like movies the carry 5.1 digital soundtracks and some of the games support 1080p. Putting the games on a standard dvd would mean that they would have to compress the audio & video more just to fit it on a dvd. But if they use either format blu ray or hd dvd the game developers have more freedom to make the games hoe they want. Also with the extra space they do not have have downloadable content. Example Rainbow Six Vegas came with Red & Black map packs. You had to download those. I have both systems and I like both. Question don't you want the games to bigger and better video and audio wise? The games today are a far cry from the atari 2600 days which I grew up on and I hope they continue to get better on both consoles and future systems. |

Comment by: japhy (Aug 01, 2007 21:29) I am excited that Sony is getting a few exclusives, no matter what your console preference is, a market with multiple thriving machines will produce better games for everyone. Just look at NFL 2k5 vs Madden, I am sorry but Madden has dropped the ball since it went exclusive. I would worry that the same thing would happen if one console ruled the roost. Like Nintendo did back in the SNES days, they sure dropped the ball back then, it took them 3 generations to really get back in the fight of things.

I personally would probably have bought a 360 over a ps3 had it used HD-DVD for games, as it is currently I just cant see the system as having a very long life(say multi disc all you like but GTA would suck ass as a multi disc game). So spending $400 now then having to pay another $400 for the next xbox in a few years would cost more than getting a ps3 now and having it last twice as long(either by braking or being replaced by newer Xbox)

Comment by: Fenix88 (Aug 02, 2007 10:14) Andrew691 is right Gears is the best looking 360 game out there and it is short very short. Beat it in 8hrs and have heard guys beating it in under 5 hrs. People also fail to realize that took them a year after the launch of the 360 up until then the games were not very impressive.

Comment by: ZippyDSM (Aug 02, 2007 14:02) Originally posted by Fenix88: Ya MS should have starter ed with 60 as the default drive at least with that 15GB to the OS 20GB for movies and crap and 20GB for game caching, since MS started the console on the low the games will have to meet some of its lower requirements altho DVD is not really a issue unless a lot of devs whip out and refuse to put a game on 2 discs

Comment by: Fenix88 (Aug 02, 2007 14:16) I agree Zippy that they are lazy. That's one reason their are very little good/great games. Look at the EA titles NCAA and Madden 07. Madden for the ps3 blew and NCAA was a let down on the 360. I could care less which consoles they are on just give the best possible game experience. I think the reason they don't want to do the 2 disc thing anymore is they can save more on production cost or whatever and profit more. |
