PlayStation 2 still the most played console, by farDVDBack23 @ Jul 26, 2007 19:28 | 23 comments
According to Nielsen GamePlay Metrics, the PS2 accounts for just over 42 percent of current game use in the US. The Xbox (original) holds the distinction of second place, at a distant 17 percent. The Xbox 360 is at 8 percent while the Nintendo Gamecube held at just under 6 percent.
The Wii, although enjoying incredible sales since its launch in November 2006, is played in only 4 percent of households while the PS3 stood at 1.5 percent placing ahead of the Nintendo 64 and PSOne.
Nielsen said it used 33,000 individuals from 12,000 households to get its data for the month of June.

Comment by: spydah (Jul 26, 2007 19:58) Yeah i can see that with them continuing selling new games even with the Next Gen systems being popular. My son and daughter play theres all the time so its understandable. Plus plenty of titles old and new. |
Comment by: Snatched (Jul 26, 2007 23:06) I personally like the sleek and small PS2. Besides not everyone owns a HDTV. Which is what suppose to make the games on the XBOX 360 and PS3 look great. |
Comment by: DXR88 (Jul 26, 2007 23:34) Yeah. Its good to hear there not giving up on the PS2 Great console With a lot of pontentiol still got my old SCPH-10001 never had to replace anything. And there going to keep the games comming. my guess is the dev's are still trying to figure out the whole Cell processor development routine iv looked at the the how to' develop on the cell processor booklet and there not even worth buying cuase whn you get the kit to develop for it. its useless. iv only started the kit on a linux computer that my school purchased that uses cell CPU tech the differnce From X86-64 even Risc is enogh to make you Want to quit the class and study goverment history again. |
Comment by: vinny13 (Jul 26, 2007 23:39) I had 2 PS2s. but kept the Fat and sold the Slim. The Slim get's to hot, it was worth more money, and the Fat is a lot easier to use the swap method. You don't even have to buy anything. All you need is cogswap in your exploit on the memory card, and your good to go. |
Comment by: OmriSama (Jul 27, 2007 03:12) LOL i love my PS2, but i'd never understand what made the original PSONE so popular when it came out. It had nintendo's competition, and nintendo was more known back then. What made PS so popular!? |
Comment by: akaangus (Jul 27, 2007 05:22) DISC READ ERROR! |
Comment by: borhan9 (Jul 27, 2007 06:29) Yes of course the PS2 is the most played because it was the best consoles when it came out. So therefore its the most bought and played. The new consoles will take sometime before they can get figures like the ps2 does. |
Comment by: NexGen76 (Jul 27, 2007 06:29) Nintendo said the Wii could out sale PS2....Lmao.PS2 still out selling every system on the market as we speak.PS2 sales not going to died down until at lease 2 years from now. |

Comment by: emugamer (Jul 27, 2007 12:08) I don't think the Wii will ever catch up to the PS2 though. Their trailing at the heels of the last generation. As interst in the PS2 fades, so will that of the Wii, because next gen gaming will probably be more affordable and there will be a larger catalog of games. If Nintendo is smart, they will release a true "next gen" system in the next couple of years.

Comment by: dsgtrain (Jul 27, 2007 14:42) I think the PS2 was so successful because of the PS1. The PS1 was the only console of its kind when it was released. The PS2 was the logical choice when it was released, it just 'made sense'. But now most people face a 3-way decision of what console they want.

Comment by: XENON (Jul 27, 2007 20:16) I've got a slim PS2 an XBOX 360 and a gamecube and I still find the time to play all 3 I think it's just one of those fav pastimes that people enjoy (myself included) |
Comment by: pstamer (Jul 27, 2007 23:17) Final Fantasy 10,11,12, God of War 1 & 2, Rogue Galaxy; What more do you need? |

Comment by: NHS2008 (Jul 28, 2007 04:49) Haha! I wont feel surprised if Sony discontinues PS3 and start PS2 production again.

Comment by: emugamer (Jul 28, 2007 06:57) Man, PS2 is releasing over 60 more games from now until end of this year, including some popular sequels - NFS, Guitar Heroe 3, Mercenaries 2, a new Tony Hawk, Spyro, DDR Supernova 2,Spiderman, NBA/NHL/FIFA 08 games, Indiana Jones, a new Growlanser, Uzumaki Chronicles 2 etc...even another Final Fantasy late to early next year. Konami is even making games for really little kids. I've been only able to find Dora The Explorer for my 4 year old. Looks like their last game may be Duke Nukem Forever, with a release date of Q4 2008 (at least that is all Gamespot is aware of). Just in time for me to decide on a PS3 or XBOX360 :-) |
Comment by: 26r0cK (Jul 28, 2007 11:11) Im playing PSone Final Fantasy IX as we speak...love the classics :P |
Comment by: BIGnewb (Jul 28, 2007 14:47) whoever said disc read error should compare it to the xbox 360 failure rate of %30.btw ps2 will continune to outsell the ps3 to prob 2009. |

Comment by: Ofnir1 (Jul 29, 2007 01:35) Quote: That's not exactly true. What made it the best anyway? I mean, I've heard people boast about how the XBOX has better graphics, better hardware, better this and that than the PS2, and yet, the PS2 still dominates. Why? One, if not the, major factor that is often overlooked is that the PS2 has a wide variety of video games available for it while the XBOX has a rather small variety of games available. With the exception of multi-platform games, there's just more of a variety to attract a wider audience. |
