Sony Europe president hints at 120GB PlayStation 3 model

David Reeves, the president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, has suggested that there may be an upcoming new model of the PlayStation 3 for European customers, a model with a 120GB hard drive.

Reeves made the comments during an interview with Dagbladet, a Norwegian website. He admitted that an 80GB version for Europe would not be significant enough to pursue, but that a 120GB model would do the trick. "The difference between 60 and 80GB is very small, we just feel that going up 20GB is not worth it," said Reeves, adding, "If you go to double it, it's worth it...so maybe you'll see something a little bit later."

Reeves also talked about the upcoming "Starter Pack" instead of a price cut like North American consumers saw. “We believe added value works in the PAL territories. We don't think it's necessary to reduce the price. We think that consumers want added value in Europe. We think it's the right decision."

they need to do like the 360 and just make upgradable hardrives u can take off if they are really going hardrive crazy...but if they are gonna lower prices everytime they get bigger hardrives then shiet i guess sony keep buying bigger hardrives i nmight actually pick one up when some good games for it come out....

sony is gonna had 3 or 6 stupid colors with ur choice of hard drive sizes next too. considering hard drives are dirt cheap these days. who the hell cares. any intermediate knoob can go to Youtube and find a video on how to install a 130 dollar 500 gig internal in a PS3 and wham bam thank you ma'am have tons of space.

sony is gay and the only thing good they made was PSX, PS2, and PSP

I'm with you man. I was going to buy a 60gig then I heard about the 80gig being released in Korea, so I decided to wait and hoped for the price drop. Then we hear about rumble feature coming back and you can't count on them to have an exchange program to swap your old controls. Now 120, daaamn you Sony. Your not making people buy them now, your making them wait. This is getting old. Also, the game I really want, MGS4, won't be out till early '08. I think I'm going to wait till the holidays.

Just played my friends new PS3 today, as of now its just a fancy media center. I would spend about 300 at the most for it considering the games that are out. The one he bought was made in 2006. Its been sitting in Walmart for about a year!!! I am a Sony guy, but the PS3 ruined it as of now.

i agree with what some people have posted about Sony confusing people with the constant changes to the PS3 but were i agree to disagree is, they are doing everything in power to keep the price up which i agree sucks and they also should have thought of this 120GB drive before saying at E3 and other places that they was clearing the 60GB version for the 80GB. Where i disagree with what people post is no matter what the change the HD to its still easy up grade for anybody to put what you want in it. I dont have a problem with them revising the system to make it better but they do need to release their strong hold on $600. $400 - $500 would be a fair price and holding the system at that price will make their sales flow. $600 will be worth it if they hold up to what was said on other news about their 80GB version which will include 2 games and to rumble controllers. If that holds thats a deal to me. But its all a matter of them sticking to that and not changing their minds like the current system they want to use in the market.

At least Sony aknowledges the fact that Americans aren't gonna pay $600 for one of their retarded bundles. As they said it works in the Pal regions which is why they'll feed North America the 80GB units while the Pal territories get a 120GB version. I think most people rather have a cheaper price with no bundled games than the same inflated price with a few ok games. So in my mind Sony will defininately have to drop the 80GB version down to $499 once the 60GB versions are gone...and if they don't...sells will drop drastically again! Good thing about this whole thing is that you can speak louder with your wallet.

lol...its amazing how people get blinded by the big hard drive..... "oh wow, it has a 120g hdd" just hide the fact that sony will start making the newer models cheaper.. glad I got mine when it first came out....

They should just make a model where it has everything except the hard drive that allows you to just go out and buy your own 2.5" HDD for it. makes zero sense to keep changing the HDD size when you can very easily go out and buy a new 2.5" 250 GB HDD drive from Best Buy and put it in instead of having a drive at a 4th or 3rd the size.

I believe the PS3 can only support up to a 120GB 2.5" lappy HDD. That's the last I read. But, yes, go out and buy the $499 model now while supplies last, and then when needed (and HDD's are a little cheaper) throw in a 120GB one yourself!

given sony might make moves that will piss some people off; but the majority of people, those of which who are not using afterdawn forums, are happy. All corporations use different tactics for different cultures. for example: coca cola is still coke wherever you go right? but the recipe is different for every country.

the important thing for me is the size, and size matters in this actual compact society, the PS3 in general is VERY BIG, is like the BIG MUMMA of video gmaes, which I am very sure they could do a much better reduction in the physical terms.

They could make it a lot smaller if they removed the power supply from it. Sony knows this but with their tradition, they want to sell the big system first and then slim it up(PlayStation to PSOne, PlayStation 2 to PSTwo, PSP to PSP Slim)

My kids want a PS3 REAL BAD....I just can't bring myself to buy one until they get the price down a little, figure out what they are doing with the hard drive, and get some games out to choose from.

you have David Reeves stating that the jump from the 60 to 80 gig is too little then you have the other monkey phil harrison saying that the 80gig in the us is great for heavy downloaders:

saying how they lower the cost to be competitive is the way to go and this is apparently the "way to go" and no mention of the removal of US 80gig hardware the emotion engine so now American can suffer the glitches we suffer in Europe now.

added value would have been full backwards compatibility I'm afraid not less hardware for a higher cost, so now you offer games that will soon be platinum and two controllers that will become obsolete very soon as the new ones are just around the corner.

The staff of Lik-Sang will make sure that nobody will get hurt in the crossfire of this ordeal.

A Sony spokesperson declined to comment directly on the lawsuit against Lik-Sang, but recently went on to tell Gamesindustry.biz that "ultimately, we're trying to protect consumers from being sold hardware that does not conform to strict EU or UK consumer safety standards, due to voltage supply differences et cetera; is not - in PS3's case - backwards compatible with either PS1 or PS2 software; will not play European Blu-Ray movies or DVDs; and will not be covered by warranty".

Lik Sang strongly disagrees with Sony's opinion that their customers need this kind of protection and pointed out that PSP consoles shipped from Lik-Sang contained genuine Sony 100V-240V AC Adapters that carry CE and other safety marks and are compatible world wide. All PSP consoles were in conformity with all EU and UK consumer safety regulations.

Furthermore, Sony have failed to disclose to the London High Court that not only the world wide gaming community in more than 100 countries relied on Lik-Sang for their gaming needs, but also Sony Europe's very own top directors repeatedly got their Sony PSP hard or software imports in nicely packed Lik-Sang parcels with free Lik-Sang Mugs or Lik-Sang Badge Holders, starting just two days after Japan's official release, as early as 14th of December 2004 (more than nine months earlier than the legal action). The list of PSP related Sony Europe orders reads like the who's who of the videogames industry, and includes Ray Maguire (Managing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Ltd), Alan Duncan (UK Marketing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Ltd), Chris Sorrell (Creative Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Ltd), Rob Parkin (Development Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Limited), just to name a few.

Don't have time to go through all of these comments; I got my PS3 in '06 and I was able to use my 160GB USB external HD without any problem. I guess these if you think a 120GB is a big deal - a Terabyte(TB) HD was on sale at Fry's early 06.

What file system is the Hard drive in? I am trying to get a 100GB external to work and it doesn't recognize the NTFS file system. I am on firmware 1.82
